I arrived slightly after 1pm and saw a long line of people queuing in front of the stall. There was more than 10 people in the queue in front of me. I contemplated patronising some other stalls as I was starving. But in the end, my desire to try this won the battle and I found myself queuing at this stall.

Other than the long queue, the only tell tale sign that this stall is famous/popular is the Singapore Hawker Legends Makansutra signboard showcased at the left of the shop front.

Ah Kow Mushroom Minced Pork Mee offers just two items; Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle and Teochew Dumpling Soup which comes in 3 difference prices (again similar to Hill Street Tai Hwa). It also offers 6 types of noodles and the prices for adding extra ingredients were clearly stated on the menu pasted in front of the stall.

The queue was extremely slow moving and I only got my food after queuing for 40 minutes! While I was in the queue, the greedy side of me decided on getting a Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle (Mee Pok) $4 and Teochew Dumpling Soup $4. After all, I had come down just for this and since I had to spent so much time queuing I may as well kill two birds with one stone and try both! Logical?

Mushroom with Minced Meat Mee Pok $4

As with all authentic Teochew Style Bak Chor Mee, vinegar (an essential sauce) imported from China was added into the Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle (Mee Pok) $4. The ingredients which included minced meat, meat slices, braised mushrooms, dumplings and fried crispy flat fish (扁鱼) were fresh. I particularly liked the fact that they were generous with their fried crispy flat fish and braised mushrooms. However, the dumplings were disappointing as it lacked in terms of flavour and bite. Luckily, the special chilli sauce complement well with the vinegar (I requested for more vinegar).

Teochew Dumpling Soup $4

The Teochew Dumpling Soup $4 reminded me of Xing Ji Rou Cuo Mian 兴记肉脞面 at Bedok 85 as it looked cloudy with minced meat floating in it.

Teochew Dumpling Soup $4

The Teochew Dumpling Soup $4 consisted of 8 pieces of dumplings, minced meat, braised mushrooms, fried crispy flat fish (扁鱼), seaweed and Garland Chrysanthemum (Tang O).

It was a terrible mistake ordering this. The dumplings as mentioned earlier was disappointing. To add on to this, the soup was bland although it looks so flavourful in the photos above..

Overall, the Bak Chor Mee was a decent. It was better than most other stalls, but not a die die must try. Moreover, Hill Street Tai Hwa's version was much better. As for the Teochew Dumpling Soup? My advice would be to give it a skip.

This review is Chubby Botak Koala personal tribute to this special legend.

My first encounter with Ah Kow was in 2002, during my first visit to Singapore. I was introduced to this BCM by Little Devil during one of our makan outings. During my first visit here, I have to confess that my taste buds was not accustomed to this dish. However, over the years, this place has grown on me and I know how to appreciate and enjoy a proper Bak Chor Mee.

Mr Cher Hang Peng hard work over the years has taken its toll over his body. He is no longer agile and as fast a before. As this is a self service stall, be ready to queue for about 30 - 40 minutes with around eight people in front of you to get your fix of BCM. Previously, it will probably take you half of the time.

We personally recommend to you to try the dry version of the BCM. I ordered the $5 version. It has the complete ingredients such as mince meat, lean meat, stewed mushrooms, tee po (sole fish), wantons to accompany the Mee Pok and the solid dash of vinegar. The noodle is very springy ( 'qq'), the 'tanginess' of the vinegar really binded these ingredients of this dish together. The chilli here is very powerful according to LD seal of approval. The lean meat is tender as it has been soak in flour mixture, and the tee po give a unique taste to the noodle.

The best way to eat this noodle is with these secret ingredient that you can help yourself to. Its called fried pork lard (la po), the not very healthy but the delicious and yummy ingredient. One thing that LD can't stop herself from eating. Just hope my GP does not see this post as he will be nagging at me for 1 hour plus.

The other item served here is Teochew Dumpling Soup. For $5 you actually get generous serving of dumplings and other ingredients. The fillings are generous and the mince pork is quite resilient. Unfortunately, the cloudy soup is bland, watery and not robust as the texture suggested. It seems that they left out a certain ingredients or forget to seasoned the soup.

Overall, the dry version of BCM at Ah Kow is something that you must try once. It is unfortunate that the overall standard has slightly decline over the years. However, I personally still salute this person for his dedication to his trade craft. Cheers!!

I read many rave reviews about this stall. I made a special effort to there just to try it for the first time. I waited in the queue with great anticipation. I ordered a basic bowl of mee pok dry. The texture of mee pok was a bit too soft to my liking. It served with nicely stewed flavorful mushroom together with minced meat, lean meat, dumpling and fried sole fish added to enhance its flavor. The sauce mix consists of black vinegar and chilli. The vinegar was a little overpowering to my liking

Saw this stall being review on a food blog and decided to go for a try. With the first taste of this mushroom minced pork mee, I was quite shocked by the taste as it is totally different from any other minced pork mee stall in singapore. The seasoning of the mee has a strong vinegar taste, which totally brings out the taste and flavour of the whole minced pork mee. But the seasoning is a little oily. The minced pork and the mee was well cooked, soft and tender texture. Overall, a totally different taste of the mushroom minced pork mee, worth the money, must try for the minced pork mee lovers !! Thumbs up !!

La Pok also known as Fried Pork Lard is one of the catches to this stall Pre-renovation. Good news is that it's here to stay....for now at least! Noodles have somewhat lost it's previous consistency as they were a little under cooked. Chilli is still as good and ventilation is much better post renovation.Be sure to arrive at off peak hours or else you'll have to queue for god knows 10-15 minutes?
