today my very close friend’s birthday. last evening i arranged a birthday dinner for him at ah yat seafood @ grandstand turf club road on 4.1.2015.

happens that my god-sis & her husband’s birthday were also just past, so we had a 6pax dinner together with my other 2 close friends.

i ordered the 6pax lobster sharkskin abalone 9-course dinner. it was very good, quite expected. the place was crowded & noisy like a fish market, with 2 tables next to us having endless drinking challenge & making a din. we used to say that the place did not matter since we would be the table making the most noise. this time though we were not. ^^

anyway, the birthday boys & girl were all happy with the trade-off – good food for fish market noises.

#1 lobster salad. canned fruit salad was refreshing, and a friend cleared off everything. as a lobster dish, lobster salad always suspect to me, few lobster pieces & lots of fruit salad, could never really compared with a proper lobster dish.

#2 sharksfin soup was sweet & tastier than i expected, but not quite the standard of ah yat abalones forum restaurant.

the #3 suckling pig was really par excellence. it was so good, crispy & tasty, equal or better than the suckling pig at hung kang or at summer garden SAFRA mt faber.

#4 fish maw with leeks was good too. not the expensive 花胶. still a tasty dish.

#5 abalones, mushrooms & chinese cabbage another great dish. abalones were smaller & no comparison with the abalones in brown sauce at ah yat abalones forum restaurant. of course. still it was great dish. i liked the mushrooms & chinese cabbage too.

#6 hk steamed 港蒸tiger garoupa was tops. better than tau heung restaurant in HK.

i enjoyed the #7 fried suckling pig meat too, but really i thought just chopping up the meat & head would be just as good.

#8 yee meen – passable i guess.

#9 bird’s nest was kind of forgettable dish for me, zero impact. we had excellent company, good food & great memories..a most enjoyable evening

$19.80 7-course chinese set lunch comprising of lobster salad & snow crab ? Sounds like a good deal ? So bought this deal from Groupon.

Lobster Fresh Fruit Salad
Not fresh fruit, but more like canned fruit cocktail, with a few sliced pieces of lobster.

Braised conpoy fish maw thick soup
The usual thick soup.

Deep fried Japanese snow crab
Instead of sweet & succulent snow crab, it was dried up fllesh with a weird smell. Obviously the crab is not fresh. The only good thing I enjoyed was the garlic/dried shrimp/chilli bits that came with the dish.

Steamed Live Fish with homemade chilli sauce
A very small tilapia fish. Chilli is very spicy

Stir-Fried Boneless Chicken with Honey Bean in Homemade Sauce
Some sweet peas stir fried with chilli chicken pieces

Braised Ee-Fu Noodle with Mushroom
A carbo dish to fill the stomach. Not much mushroom pieces. Most restaurants would serve with yellow chives to enhance the taste, but it is absent here.

Fresh Mango Pudding
Not much mango pieces. Served with optional evaporated milk.

Usual price is said to be $33, so this is a purported 40% discount. Honestly, what you pay is what you get, so don't expect too much. There is compulsory order of peanuts, towels and Chinese tea, which works out to $2.40 per pax.

Their xiao long bao was also not bad. Everyone raves about din tai fung xiao long bai but seriously there are many better ones out there. Ah yat's version is worth a try.

THere is this dish with dou sha and banana inside fried fritters is also very good. the combination of these 2 ingredients will really leave you wanting more.

Lastly, the red bean soup was good, grainy and not too sweet.

I guess it's a good place for special occasions especially with elderly who likes traditional chinese food, and the private rooms have karaoke, and you'll be able to play powerpoint slides, etc, so it's a plus point. But they certainly need to improve their service.

We reserved a private room to ourselves and had 2 tables; service was lacking and we had to refill our own tea. Unlike Old Hong Kong, they did not change new plates after 2 dishes or so, and we had to request for it. They didn't even clear the tables before serving dessert. Moving on to the food, the suckling pig and duck were alright, not the best i've eaten. The shark's fin soup was also less impressive than Old Hong Kong's. The steamed prawns were good though, fresh and very juicy.

I ate dimsum buffet few times with and without the Groupon voucher. With Groupon Voucher: I came 4 times (Thrice on Saturday, once on Sunday)Very worth it. 2 pax usually $35+, so approximately 1 pax around $18. With Groupon Voucher: I came 4 times (Thrice on Saturday, once on Sunday)

Very worth it. 2 pax usually $35+, so approximately 1 pax around $18. The har gao, sio may, ji jiao (chicken feet) and all other selections are very nice and fresh. So please give it a try if you do spot vouchers. The only bad thing is the location itself as it is very isolated, located inside Turf City.

If you can walk, you can take a bus and take a 15mins walk from the bus stop using GPS. Otherwise you can take taxi or if you can drive, that's the best. The first time we came, we were highly surprised because the restaurant's exterior is very ugly and messy. But when I entered, I changed my mind immediately. The waitresses and waiters were all in proper uniform with fast and pleasant services.

Without voucher: for weekend they got 50% discount (not sure about weekdays). Surprisingly when we visit the restaurant without vouchers, the food selections were not as fresh. The prawns are not juicy, the siew mai was cold and yet we paid more - around $60 2 pax. T_T

So my reasoning: They anticipated high customer traffic flow during the promotion period, hence the chefs would replenish the buffet spread with fresh supplies. However when there is no promotion, the chefs would not replenish the supplies so frequently.

So my suggestion, better come when Groupon got promotion

Visited this place for dim sum, was a pretty random choice and just felt like getting out from the city for a while. The waiters were rather slow but still OK. The har gow was tasty and the steamed pork ribs were done just right although the sauce can be slightly thicker. Char Siew Pau was decent although I've tasted better ones in HK, including the famed Tim Ho Wan. We also ordered butter crabs and it was too oily and perhaps fried too long.

Anyways... the siew mai was the highlight for me apart from the char siew bao.... Very nice... Completely speechless...

We paid some more to eat and to try out other stuff... for me... i was contented once i ate the pork ribs... nothing else really matters from there...

I loved the decor of the place... quite relaxing... and there were nice tables... so i guess it was pretty good for me...

Love this dish as it is crisoy in the outside and soft on the inside due to the burrinja. Fried garlic pieces are also found on top and this adds flavour and additional crunch to the already crispy dish. One downside is that the burrinja was a little too salty but it is really nice and i must say quite addictive too!! Had two plates of it as it was really good. You do not feel that it is too oily so that is really good.

Ah yat's seafood roll is really crispy and nice as it is deep fried. The crunch on the outside is good but felt that the fillings inside the roll is not substanial. There is only a little fillings inside and it is not worth its value. Howvever, the char siew pau was not bad. Love the soft and piping hot pau with sweet barbeque pork inside. It is best eaten when first served as the pau is really hot.

Anyway, there are 2 ways to reach the restaurant which is at level 3 by taking the lift at both ends of the building, one of them is next to giant supermarket and you will need to pass through the Unique Seafood Market before going into Ah Yat Seafood restaurant.

Fresh prawns cooked in drunken prawn with herbal style – Very fresh prawn (As usual) in nice herbal soup where you can taste a little bit of that liquor taste.
Crab cooked in Pumpkin style – Nice but not really into crab though.
Crab cooked in chili style – Chili Crab. Nothing much to comments about too.

If you never ordered these bun to go with the sauce of those chili and pumpkin crab, it would not be fulfilling at all. These small buns are nicely fried to crispy on the outside while fresh and tender on the inside. Great to be eaten with the crab sauce.
