Hand-cut Calamari - $9

Well, what can go wrong with a basket of well batter, deep fried squids? Near to nothing!

The batter wasn't exactly very crispy and the squid wasn't exactly tender-chewy enough, but it was still packed with flavour to make this basket of fried squid pretty addictive.

Mozzarella Fritters - $7

I didn't really get to eat this, because the waiter came and cleared the plate even though there's still 1 whole, untouched fritter left on it. He didn't even bother to ask if he can clear it. Just reached in, grabbed the plate and left while we're engrossed in chit-chatting.

BAD SERVICE, CBB, BAD SERVICE!

Erm, any refund of the (perhaps) $2?

But according to the rest who has eaten it, it's still 'not too bad' for a cheese lover.

Morrocan Lamb Casserole - $16

A pair of lamb Marquez in tomato stew done Moroccan style, overlaid with eggs and baked in a hot plate!

CBB is quite a bad place to be taking pictures due to backlight in every corner and every single angle.

But this dish is really delish! However, the serving is pretty small and if it's not for the 2 slices of toasted baguette and with the calamari, I might have left the place hungry. I can't really say I understand the point of adding 2 eggs on top of the dish, for it doesn't complement ANYTHING imo. Well, it might have been for the toasts, which were better off being paired with the tomato stew to begin with. So In the end, I pretty much gobbled down the runny yolks first (I really cannot imagine the taste of it getting mixed into the rest of the stew) before moving on with the rest of the dish. The lamb cubes were tender and savoury, and the tangy tomato stew simply brought out more of its flavour.

If you're a lamb and tomato lover like me, I really recommend that you try this!

Classic Eggs Benedict - $17

Two softly poached eggs built on toasted Vienna with chicken ham, lime vinaigrette mesclun and hollandaise sauce.

Frankly speaking, I won't say that they're very affordable but the food quality is definitely there for a cafe (even though beanstro's concept is meant to be a casual dining restaurant, I still view CBB more as a cafe), and it makes the penny a little more worth spent. Service wise, they need to train the waiters not to clear off non-empty plates without asking the diners if it's alright to do so.

a chicago cheesecake with the addtional chocolate drizzles and a quarter of a sour strawberry saw a sizeable price increase to $8 from the usual $6.50 that I was used to paying at the regular coffee bean cafes.

the ultimate ice blended with java chip was a lot more diluted here today, even with the addition of whipped cream.

unless it's another attempt to try the food, i don't think i'll be back here soon.

We started our meal with the Seafood Velvet $9 from the Soup section. Resembling the creamy texture of a chowder, the soup had a full-bodied seafood flavor, augmented by the gentle peach compote sweetness nuances and complete with whole scallops. Easy on the palate and delightful to the taste buds, this one has two thumbs up from me.

Weight watchers will take to this Tuna Nicoise Salad $19 which is low in fat and extremely high in protein, gratuitous of the yellow-fin tuna loin coated with sesame seeds and hard boiled egg. Cuing on the healthy theme were a handful of fresh cherry tomatoes, few rings of raw onions as well as strings of Haricot Vert tossed in the salad for your daily dose of natural vitamins. Your dietician will certainly approve of the wholesome choice.

And aforementioned above, Beanstro also offers All-Day-Breakfast from 8am, with complimentary coffee and tea until 11am daily. The breakfast menu is not limited at all, with extremely competitive pricings of under $10 for Cereals, under $15 for Griddles such as Pancakes, French Toast, Buttermilk Waffles and under $20 for all your Egg centered dishes.

To be honest, I was quite hesitant about ordering the Classic Eggs Benedict $17 as it is such a humdrum breakfast staple that has been done and overdone everywhere. But with some cajoling from Steven, the general manager who insisted that Beanstro's Eggs Ben were something special, I decided to give it a try.

And I am so glad I did because this Eggs Ben turned out to be one of the best Eggs Ben in Singapore that I have had by far. The poached eggs with the runny yolk and textured Hollandaise sauce was spot on but the real magic was in that layer of melted cheese on the toasted Vienna which made it near perfect. This is a must try.

Desserts on the menu are all under $10 and portions are made for sharing. We tried the Bread & Butter Pudding $9 which was rightfully smooth and custardy with sweet milky undertones. Loved the contrast of the crispy crust and soft spongy layers. Now if only I had a scoop of ice-cream alongside...

The Cherry Clafouti $10 was a simple cherry clad pudding with a custard base. Served warm and with a dust of powdered sugar, this classic French dessert was a lightly sweet and eggy end to the meal.

The hot Cafe Caramel was another good choice. I enjoyed the comforting sweetness though could not taste much of the caramel.

Then, decided to order a portion of Deep Fried Calamari Rings with Garlic Dip ($9.00). Surprisingly, this was the best dish. The batter was not too thick but amazingly crispy. It still tasted nicely crispy even after left it for a bit. It tasted nice when had it with the garlic sauce though the supposedly garlic sauce has got little garlic taste. It was served with a portion of salad.

Another side order was Classic Quiche Lorraine ($7.50). The eggy and the cheese taste were not too strong. It served with a portion of salad too with a vinegar based dressing. Part of the quiche tasted of this dressing too. I thought it might be the worst dish of the night but got surprised later.

The main was the 200 grams Ribeye Steak ($25.00). I wanted the doneness to be at medium. It served a bit too soon and too fast, right after the Fried Calamari Rings. The appearance of the steak did not look charred. It did not have a bit of smoky taste too.

When i cut the steak, it was too raw to be done at Medium. It was likely to be at Medium-Rare instead. It was served with mushroom sauce but the mushroom sauce has got no distinctive taste. This was the worst steak that i ever eaten.

Another main was Lamb Shank ($24.00). It was a decent dish. The texture of lamb shank was soft and not overly mushy. It was cooked well to omit the strange taste of lamb. It was seated on a pile of mashed potato but this pile of mashed potato tasted a bit too dry with no taste of butter.

Dessert was Tiramisu ($10.00) to be shared. This ended up to be another disappointment. The texture of Tiramisu was too dry and ended up tasting like cake. There was a slight liquor-coffee taste but this was concentrated only right in the centre.

Though the standard of food was disappointing but the customer service though a bit laid back initially but was pretty attentive later.

The speed of serving the foods was a bit too fast as well. The Fried Calamari Rings, the Classic Quiche Lorraine, the Ribeye Steak and the Lamb Shank were served almost at the same time only difference in minutes. Though they are not fine dinning restaurant but they should be mindful as it would not be likely for us to eat the main and the starter at the same time. It would be appropriate for them to wait for us to finish the starter first before serving the main. If they really must do so perhaps it would be better to prepare the customers first.

We were seated at a small square table meant for 2 with an additional chair added. The table was a bit too small for all the foods mentioned earlier with 2 drinks.

On a side note, Steven Dason - the Restaurant Manager approached my table 3 times through the dining session. He came to check on the food when it was just served. He came again to offer to get us some plain water to dilute the sweet aftertaste of the coffee. He came again after we done eating. I told him the steak was rather raw when it supposed to be done at Medium.

The total bill is $105.30 inclusive of GST and Service Charge. An expensive and not so memorable dinner. I had read many good reviews about Beanstro and these were the invited reviews for food tasting. That somewhat explained why there is such a difference in the standard of food?

Egg Royale $13.50++

All of the thick toasts served here were really fluffy inside – I only wish they could be toasted a little more for extra crunch around the skin.

Also, you will find a slice of almost melted torched cheese on top of the toast, stacked on by the eggs which were drowned in a thick and smooth Hollandaise sauce – torched atop again for colour.

These smoked salmon was fairly salty which I had no qualm with, the saltiness will help to season the poached eggs as you eat along.

Egg Florentine $12.50++

The stir fried garlic scented spinach added a very homey touch to this plate. Thick smoky turkey hams to boot.

This is a Halal certified restaurant if you are wondering.

Working our way through the smoky turkey ham and aromatic wilted spinach atop…the black bits were freshly ground pepper milled on request.

Did I mention the side salad, how refreshing and zesty the dressing was?

Do not ignore the greens, munch on it.

Egg Salmon & Asparagus $14++

The blanched baby asparagus were bunched up, tightened by a torched sliced of smoke salmon.

Lesser smoked salmon here with extra dose of crunchy greens on this plate – your call!

Overall, we were happy with the quality and taste on these four breakfast varieties.

Out of the four breakfast permutations, we loved the Egg Beef Patty ($13++) the most. With a distinct crust on the surface, the interior had a lovely hints of spices that cut though the richness of the egg. To add to the allure, this had an extra golden layer of beautifully torched hollandaise sauce.

The Egg Florentine ($12.50++) came with folded browned ham with nicely charred edges, distinguishing itself from the light pinkish version. The unseasoned poached eggs married nicely with the savoury ham and wilted spinach, though the latter was slightly over-salted. The egg yolk was flowing very quickly but we mopped it clean with the pillowy soft toast (not dry English muffins) within seconds.

Egg Royale ($13.50++)
I love smoked salmon but I must admit that the tastebuds lost its direction between the Egg Royale ($13.50++) and Egg Salmon & Asparagus ($14.00++). Both were similar except for the asparagus in the latter that offered an extra crunch. Some dashes of pepper that I've added in later, perked up my appetite which was unexpectedly overwhelmed by the creaminess of smoked salmon and eggs.

Mango Almond Tart ($8)
Desserts were nothing to rave about. The Tiramisu ($10) was too dry and lacked coffee aroma, though the sweet Chantily cream served alongside was a nice touch. The filling of the Cream Puff ($6) between two dry shells was rather cloying, but not too sweet.The Mango Almond Tart ($8) had a nice crumbly texture but passable. The breakfasts are more enjoyable than the desserts, which could have tasted better if not served too chilled.

Egg Salmon & Asparagus ($14.00++).
In short, if you are craving for good-quality and affordable breakfasts, Beanstro fits the bill as compared to the average $20 brunches nowadays. The impressive thing is how the chef consistently delivered perfectly poached eggs that oozed egg yolk profusely for every single dish.I am not a beefy person but should I return here for breakfast again, I would definitely pick the Egg Beef Patty---Sinful pleasures at its best. So contrary to earlier reviews, I'm pretty sure that you should try the breakfast and skip the desserts.

Egg Benedict is no stranger to breakfast/brunch lovers who swore by its runny egg yolks set upon a bed of bacon and English muffins, topped with a good deal of creamy hollandaise sauce. Beanstro's version (S$17.00) was disappointing. The hollandaise is extremely dry to start with - maybe it's their own version, but some things are not meant to be changed especially when it has served its good purpose all this while. Hollandaise sauce equals creamy, rich texture. Anything that falls short of that standart fails.

The salad was overpowering with balsamic vinegar, turning the lovely greens and cherry tomatoes into a pile of sour waste. Well, not every aspect of this Egg Benedict is bad, I liked how the runny egg yolks and melted cheese complement the slightly toasted bread. But again, this proves little to salvage the entire dish.

Carrot cake was quite the slice of goodness I was looking for as a pairing to their awesome Double Chocolate (S$6.50). It is much denser than Cedele's rendition, with the cream layer being sweeter (and frostier harder). As much as a sweet tooth I am, I still prefer Cedele's as it packed more carrot slices and nuts.

But trust me when I say that their Double Chocolate is awesome, it is thick, creamy, icy, chocolatey and what's not. Topped with a wallop of whipped cream, this IS the beverage for warm, sunny days. I guarantee that all of you (chocolate lovers out there) will drink till its last drop, plus chop if you want.

Will I be back? Yeah sure, probably. But I would rather try out their pastas, burgers or sandwiches the next time round. And cakes. Yeah, cakes too, with a good ol hazelnut latte probably.

The pudding had a little burnt crust, which gave it a toasty aroma and a fantastically crisp top. Sink your teeth slowly into the fluffy spongey inside, and its custard cream was sweet without being cloying. It will be heaven if the pudding is drenched with a copious amount of ice cream...

Dropping by at Ngee Ann City on a Monday evening, we were surprised to see the CBTL Cafe that has been around for ages sporting a new overhead signboard marked 'Beanstro'. Beanstro first made its appearance at the upmarket MBS Shoppes at one of the stellar shop locations surrounding the New York artist, Ned Khan-designed 'must see' water feature the Rain Occulus. Basically the same beverage and light meal offerings at any other CBTL Cafe, with the introduction of several all day breakfast items and hot one dish meals PLUS the addition of 10% service charge and 7% GST to the bill. We could accept this practice at the posh MBS and the coveted 'circle seats' just beside the Rain Occulus, but doing so at a more than 1 decade-old shopping mall smacks of profiteering. We walked in only because there were vacant tables readily available.

The chicken salad that we used to order elsewhere now costs $17.70 after service charge and GST.Medium sized portion and quite tasty.

The other item was a hot dish under the All Day Breakfast section of the menu - Lamb Stew costing $18.80 after adding service charge and GST. Though the Cafe was not full we were kept waiting about half an hour for this item. This was excessively salty and hard as we tried (to avoid wasting food) we could only finish half of it using the paltry two slices of baguette served with the dish to moderate its highly salty flavour.

The staff seemed to be more accustomed to working in a typical self-service CBTL Cafe than a full service Cafe. We had to ask for water before it was served and nobody bothered to refill our empty little glasses. Tired of waiting we went to the service counter (yes, those in all the CBTL Cafes) and helped ourselves at the 2 airpots containing hot and
chilled water.

Half hearted service, ok salad but terrible lamb stew. There are many more other better dining options at Ngee Ann City.

Oh my, it is certainly a rather accessible cafe, located in town which served nice all day breakfast, pasta and western cuisines. Normally, all the cafes which served all day breakfast required us to take MRT and bus before we can sit down and enjoy our meals. It is a new cafe located within Takashimaya which is just opposite Talking Hall of Taka. It used to be Cedele and now it became Beanstro. It had quite a brisk business on weekend judging from the crowds and the queue which lined the outside of the cafe.

We were quite fortunate to get a seat after waiting for around 15mins. I had Beanstro all day breakfast for my dinner with hot chocolate (opps forgot to take picture) as my drink. The mushroom is well marinated to my liking. It's quite comparable to other out of town cafe for its breakfast. However, the price is slightly higher than other cafes, $18 for a set.

Nonetheless, I will still recommend all to try this cafe out at Taka. A new concept from Coffee Bean. A good place to go for coffee lovers in town...
