Impromptu dinner with evil sistas again, they knew I had cravings for Asian food due to the lack of it during my recent vacation. So we're heading to Beng Hiang Restaurant for some traditional Hokkien cuisine.

Located just a short stroll away from the Telok Ayer station on Downtown line, Beng Hiang is housed in an old school restored shophouse along Amoy street. The interiors are deliberately designed to look traditionally Chinese.

We ordered some of the most popular dishes served here, and we started the meal with a thick soup, Fish Maw Soup (M) $40+. The soup was loaded with ingredients, they were very generous with the amount of fish maw used in this soup, needless to say it was incredibly flavorful. Recommended.

Ngoh Hiong & Hae Zor (M) $16+, the must order Hokkien staple on every table. However, none of us find it nice, it just tasted really ordinary like those sold at economic beehoon stalls. The Hae Zor (prawn roll) doesn't contain crunchy prawn bits and the Ngoh Hiong lacks fragrance and flavor. Quite disappointed with this dish.

Kong Bak Bao (S) $16+, the saving grace came when this dish was served. The Kong Bak (braised pork belly) was super soft, tender and well infused with flavor. The bao wasn't the fluffiest I've eaten, but was acceptable.

The star dish of the day, Crispy Roast Chicken (whole) $30+. The chicken was roasted to perfection with delightful crispy skin and moist succulent meat. Serving portion was huge too.

Another star dish of the day, Crispy Oyster Omelette (M) $20+. The oysters were fresh and juicy and the omelette was expertly executed, very crispy and yet not greasy...thumbs up!

Stir fried Broccoli w/ Scallops (M) $30+, this was delish too, very hard to go wrong with fresh chunky scallops and crunchy broccoli.

The Traditional Hokkien Noodles (L) $16+, the second disappointment of the day. A reputable Hokkien restaurant that cannot deliver a tasty Hokkien Mee was unacceptable. Noodles was kinda soggy and sticky, and the dark sauce was seriously lacking in flavor! I wouldn't order this again.

Lastly, we're served a small portion of their complimentary dessert, Beancurd skin & Barley sweet soup. It was overly sweet, I added water into it to dilute the sweetness. Not nice.

Despite having two of the traditional dishes failing us, we still feel Beng Hiang serves pretty decent Chinese food that is also well priced for a restaurant situated inside the CBD area. The serving staffs weren't really very smiley but we couldn't complain when they don't charge the 10% service charge right?

As we swayed into the restaurant, the strong woody smell gave us a good nostalgic feel somewhat back in the 80s. On top of that, the old school decors like red walls, carpets, Chinese paintings and lazy Suzy were a great reminiscent to those younger days.

Although it was a weekday night, when meal time comes, it gets packed. The atmosphere was noisy but enjoyable. It also served as a good place for after work dinner considering its ambiance and can hold big groups on their round tables.

All portions were small as we are dining in a group of 4 ladies. The Fish Maw Soup was the first dish of the night and was surprisingly good. A known good alternative to the Shark Fin Soup! As the menu suggest, the soup was thick with crab meat. This dish was indeed lip-smacking good with or without the additional vinegar.
Cost: $18

Generous ingredients was loaded and every mouthful was incredibly flavourful. Also, Crab meat was fresh and thick. If only there were extra servings and I could pop more than just 1 bowl!

Opted the Prawn instead of the usual Oyster Oyster Omelette, it was my first try and a wonderful choice. The omelette was deep fried to golden brown and was very crispy under-which with a distinct yellow layer from the egg, a total different experience like those we had from the Hawkers.
Cost: $12

When love and hates collide - Love the luscious slabs of braised pork meat that was cooked to a tender perfection but worry about the cholesterol intake? The umami rich braised pork was irresistible despite its sinful fat and cholesterol. Just heck it! Eat first then say!

Every strand of noodles was lavished with its sauce and it crispy pork lards was the bonus that brought the dish to another level of aroma! Seafood is reasonably fresh and filling. Almost all tables had this dish on their table by default. So what are you waiting for?

Last but not least, we were served with little bowls of green bean soup, complimentary desserts from Meng Hiang. These bowls of dessert once consumed has beneficial elements in cooling down the body system. It was cooked together with little translucent sago and right amount of sweetness.

To sum up, Beng Hiang is definitely a Gem to the Hokkiens, holding up the traditional values. The restaurant is big enough conduct events like traditional Chinese wedding. Service was quite okay with the helpers promptly topping up our pot of tea even though they knew we were not be ordering anymore food. What's more, no service charge was required!

I went to try some truly Authentic Hokkien Cuisine at Beng Hiang @ Amoy Street. It is a very old-school sort of Chinese restaurant. After looking at the menu, we ordered : Traditional hokkien Mee,Ti-wan meow, Golden cereal prawn and fried prawn ball! The service is Friendly and good. Hokkien mee has lots of 'wok hei' very tasty; crispy and well seasoned fried prawn ball; vegetable is a bit oily; cereal prawn is unique and delicious!

Our family ordered a 8 courses Chinese meal set, however we replaced 2 dishes with Kong bak bao (which is one of their famous dish) and vermicelli (which is my grandma's favorite)!

It was said to recommended by Mediacorp artists Kim Ng a few years back, however, it did not find their food fantastic at all. Their Kong Bak Bao was too oily and the fats portion was more than their meat portion! Their shake fin soup was very diluted and I didn't like it at all. For the rest of the courses, i didn't find it awesome and the service was really slow with high charges. I think their service charges and GST should be waived since we didn't really like their services.

Chiobu and I were at the reception counter and an old rude fat man cut our queue, saying, “I’m sitting with Dr. XXX.”

I quickly told the receptionist, “We are here first.”

The receptionist replied brusquely, “He already has a table” and quickly led the fat old man to the table before returning to us. We also already had a table–she had no excuse for letting the old man go first. She should have told the man to wait because we were there first. It made me think that she was impressed by the title of Dr.

The service remained bad throughout. One friend–he’s so funny–was so frightened of the grumpy waitress he asked me not to call her to help us anymore. I said, “But it’s her job!” He complained and complained about the horrible service, like we owe them money, but when the waitress came, he would thank her so sweetly like a little boy who just received candy.

The old skool decor, however, was pretty nostalgic, like in the 80s, with red walls, chinese paintings, wooden lazy Susan. The atmosphere was very convivial and noisy. And there were an amazingly high number of hot men. Yums!

There were five of us and we over-ordered: hokkien noodles ($12); spring roll ($8); fish maw soup ($28); oyster egg ($12); steamed garoupa ($56) and for desserts, yam paste ($15). I can understand why people withstand the horrible service to eat. The Hokkien-cuisine food was quite astonishingly good.

The fish maw soup, or shark fin soup without the shark fin, was thick and lipsmacking, so you know the cartilage had dissolved into the soup, giving you collagen. There are two types of spring roll, one is with prawn (hia zhou), the other with minced pork. They were quite simply the best I’ve ever eaten. I didn’t know spring roll can taste so savory. Theoyster egg was different from the hawker centres; this one is completely deep-fried and packed a punch. I never like hokkien mee because they tend to have a plasticky pungent taste but this one–”crackling with lard,” my friend said–didn’t have that ammonia scent and I could tolerate it. My friends loved it.

The only two bad dishes were the steamed garoupa and yam paste. Woah, $56 for a fish!! The broth wasn’t sweet enough and the fish, fresh but not super fresh to justify that kind of price at this kind of restaurant. The yam paste was downright rotten, not smooth, with huge bits of yam in them, and was quite tasteless. Waste of calories.

From the outside of the restaurant, the street was so quiet you’d never imagine how bustling it was inside. Reservations are a must. We spent $150 for 5 people (GST but no service charge). Although you don’t need to be a doctor to eat here, it’s best when you make reservations, say that you’re a doctor. They wouldn’t know anyway and you’d receive better treatment. You can cut queue. Doctors’ $5 is worth more than non-doctors’ $5, you know.

The gravy is so flavourful that goes so well with white rice, if you decided not to eat the meat with the steamed bun.

Fried prawn balls ($8) 虾枣 are crispy outside. Insides fills with generous amount of well-mixed ingredients! A must try dish.

Oyster with eggs ($12) 香脆蚝煎 is another great dish. With big, fresh oysters and crispy fried eggs, this dish is simple too delicious. I love the chilli that goes really well with it too!

1) Fish Maw Soup - thick and chock full of ingredients. Nice, like sharkfin soup without the fin! Yay!!

2) Condensed Milk Powder Prawn - this is one of their famous dish and it lived up to its name. Interested sweet savory coat to the fresh prawns.

3) Orh Jian - this was a high class version as the oysters were larger than the hawker stall ones. Taste is good but one pal found it too dry.

4) Salted Fish Doumiao - good wok-Hei taste.

5) King Bak Bao - also good and very tender. Went well with the buns but I found the meat amount was a little conservative for the amount of buns. Either that or the men pile too much meat in their buns!!

6) Ngo Hiang - this one was nice! Best dish of the night!

7) Hokkien Mee - I expected more from here. It's supposed to be their signature dish too. But I found the taste is nice but nothing to rave about. It's just as nice as the good hawker versions.

It was a good dining experience but not a place I'll return as there are cheaper Zichar places that can deliver about the same quality.
