We dropped by this original Bengawan Solo Cake Shop enroute to a Christmas potluck dinner to buy something for dessert. BengawanSolo built its name on homestyle Straits Chinese cakes (Peranakan kueh) but has since jumped on the commercial bandwagon to produce western style frosted/cream cakes and logcakes. We picked the $44.80 chocolate logcake for our host. Appearance of the logcake was nothing to shout about but tastewise it was acceptable - not too much buttercream, not too sweet, not too hea

We picked the $44.80 chocolate logcake for our host. Appearance of the logcake was nothing to shout about but tastewise it was acceptable - not too much buttercream, not too sweet, not too heavy, good texture and the hazelnut chocolate taste was discernible. For an established bakery and logcakes priced above $40, I would rate Bengawan Solo's logcake 2.5/5 for its looks 2.5/5 for value and 3.5/5 for taste.

My colleagues have bought a few boxes of the signature kueh kueh from Bengawan Solo. They are really colourful and smell really good as well! Almong all, my favourite choice will be the coconut rice with shredded coconut on it. The glutinuous rice is very fragrant and filled with the nice smell from the banana leaf used in wrapping it. The shredded coconut are quite thick in texture and is very fragrant and fill with the light sweetness from the brown sugar used in it.

This is the original shop where Bengawan Solo started. It is famous for its Indonesian kuehs and plain western cake, such as Walnut cake, Marble cake etc. The Pandan Chiffon cake is one of the best in Singapore & highly popular with Hong Kong tourist. It uses good quality butter and ingredients which is why the prices are higher. Harum Manis is like a steam sponge cake with ripe sliced banana topping. It has a nice brown sugar taste. The cake is very soft and moist. This yummy cake cost 90 cent

The tapioca kueh is very fresh and soft., together with fresh coconut gratings on top. It is not too sweet and does not make your mouth feel dry after eating. It will be a good afternoon snack to go with a cup of coffee or tea. However, I feel too much of this kueh will make one sick of it. I like it to be served chilled.
