Located in an industrial estate in Toa Payoh is Botak Jone's newest food outlet, Big Bern's American Grill, as you may have heard, he sold the business away a while ago. Now, he's back with a bigger menu with a lot of options to try! Ranging from burgers, chicken and fish plates to  shrimp, steaks, ribeyes and po-boys.They even have a wide selection of sides, most mains come with two sides. Pick from mexican rice, double baked cheese potato, mushroom soup, spicy louisana chicken gumbo, heinz baked beans, coleslae, regular fries, cajun fries, fresh salad or pasta salad.1. Cheesesteak Po-Boy $9.90First up was the cheesesteak po-boy, having lived in Pennsylvania, home of the Philly cheesesteak, I was excited to try this! This is only the lite version, which was still at least 6 inches long. Paired with the baked cheese potato which I highly recommend and coleslaw. The meat sadly, was very tough and hard to chew on. It's the hardest cheesesteak sandwich I had ever come across, I was sad to end up wiping the plate clean of the sides and leaving the sandwich behind. 2. Fish and Chips $6.90The fish and chips faired alot better than the cheesesteak po-boy. The fish fillet was huge for the price and tasted pretty good. The mushroom soup here was served in a cup, there were real mushrooms in there and you could tell it didn't come out of a can. The soup tasted good and the salad was fresh.3. Cajun Chicken Plate $6.90The cajun chicken was very tasty. I love cajun flavoured food and this was one of them. It wasn't too spicy, just slightly tangy.Their serving of fries was ginormous! I didn't expect this much for a lite serving of Cajun Chicken. All in all, hits and misses, but with their low prices and hidden location in an industrial estate, only time will tell if their business will succeed. I visited on a weekend and noticed several families with young children were patronizing Big Bern's. Another plus point is this coffee shop on the second floor is air-conditioned.  continue reading
