The weather in Singapore has been unbearably hot recently and I have been pulling out all the stops in trying to beat the heat, from hiding out in air-conditioned areas to downing cold drinks by the dozen. Another trusty method would be enjoying iced desserts, from local delights such as Chendol and Ice Kacang, to more fancy options like Gelato ice cream. Thus, I decided to finally try Blackball, a taiwanese dessert chain that has landed on our shores.

They have an outlet at the relatively new Star Vista mall, which has a small seating area great to sit, eat and chill with friends. I tried the Blackball signature icy, which is featured as the "Best" on their website and retails for $4.90. It is easy to see why this is considered their signature treat since it's generously laden with various toppings such as golden sweet potato, yam balls, grass jelly and red bean just to name a few. It also comes with evaporated milk for you to pour over the dessert.

While I loved the icy base which made the dessert such a treat to savour on a warm day, only the grass jelly and red beans impressed me as I felt that the rest of the toppings were much too starchy and I could hardly taste what they were supposed to be made from, such as the yam and sweet potato. The grass jelly though is a winner as it is probably the silkiest and smoothest grass jelly that I've ever eaten in my life! Thus, I doubt I will be repurchasing this treat as I did not like most of the toppings. That said, you can customize your own cup of blackball so I will definitely be back to try it out!

I tasted nothing speacial but is not awful at the same time. The only thing i dislike is the flour made kueys. All taste the same to me, nothing special at all. However, they have real good servicing staffs. See my pics (the cashier is posting), she is super nice and friendly when taking my order! I will definitely try blackballs again because of her, but my this dish anymore!

If you still haven't tried this Taiwanese dessert place, then you really should try it! Especially on hot days, this icy cold dessert is one of my favourite ways to cool off. =] Their Signature Blackball consists of a bit of everything that they offer. From the grass jelly, red beans, yam, sweet potato and pearls. This is by far the smoothest and most refreshing grass jelly you will ever get.

Man, I love this place. It sells really nice chewy balls that are from Taiwan directly (I saw the boxes). There are like different flavours such as yam flavoured and honey flavoured. Ask more for the yam flavour because the yam taste is really strong . The ice blended underneath the pile of grass jelly is also delicious. The entire mixture goes really well together so it's a good bowl of dessert for a hot day (just abit expensive)

Blackball must be my new favorite dessert. A bowl of icy signature comes with the grass jelly, taro ball, yam Q (not sure what is the difference) sweet potato ball, red bean, peral, tapioca ball. And there is a small cup of milk to pour over. I always order the icy version, and really like it. The seats are pretty much outdoor, with only around two small table that are sheltered. So rainy days, there is practically no space to sit around. Bad design.

As compared to the original Jiufen Taro Balls, Blackball Singapore did better in terms of the amount of ingredients you can find in there. It's rare to find Taiwanese food in Singapore that beats the original... but Blackball does it. What it could have done better - provide with more of each ingredients, especially the taro and sweet potato balls. There's so much more pearls and grass jelly pudding than the balls, I can't help but feel a little cheated.

It costs $4.90.

Just nice to share for two people, but too little for three. I shared with two other friends and I was left craving for more.

It is my first time trying the milk green tea here and I really like it! The sugar level for my order is around 25% and the sweetness is just right for me. The milk green tea tastes awesome and I feel that it is on par with my other favourite milk tea stalls such as Koi and Gongcha. I also tried the normal milk tea and it is quite good too! I will go back again for more desserts and milk tea!

I love this bubble milk tea as it has a nice aroma of the tea and the milk they used is very rich. Once you take a sip of the drink, you can taste the creaminess of the milk and the aroma of the tea. This makes the drink very refreshing and it is great to quench your thirst on such a hot day in Singapore. I strongly recommend you guys to give it a try as it tastes as great as those Hong Kong Milk Tea that I had when I was in Hong Kong during a trip.

Known for their taiwanese dessert, this cafe has a pretty good variety of sweet treats and bubbe tea. The dessert was something unique with bubble tea pearls, red bean, sweet potato balls and taro balls. The balls are chewy and quite filling. The dessert comes in either icy, cold, warm or hot. I tried the icy one and i feel that the amount of shaved ice could be increased. The dessert was just cold and nit icy enough.

Not sure if the mediacorp artist owns this new Taiwanese franchise but we do see his stand-up props and posters very visibly at the shop. We ordered the standard blackball signature dessert which comes with the shaved ice version which tasted like grass jelly flavored ice. You will also be provide a small milk add on which you will add into the dessert, just like how you do it for mos burger peach milk tea. There were plenty of ingredients in this dessert dish, red beans, tapioca, sweet potato, yam, pearls and grass jelly. Though its not a huge pate i must say the variety is impressive. i particularly like the yam cubes. My dessert cost $4.90

It was, like the rest of the island, a wet Sunday afternoon at the Star Vista and had just emerged victorious from a hearty meal at a diner, looking for some sweetbits to wash down the savouries. Enter BlackBall, heralded by one of our local media darlings, Zhang Yao Dong. The shop was strategically located next to several full-scale diners (e.g. Porn's and Watami Casual Japanese Cuisine) although Owl Coffee had found a roost in the immediate vicinity as well.

Fair enough, BlackBall was a little shop (only four tables with which to seat around) and gave you the up and trendy impression akin to KOI, Gong Cha, and the whatnot. We ordered their, erm, signature BlackBall Signature - warmed.

Firstly, we were pretty disappointed with the presentation of the dessert - so unlike that shown in the flyer! Basically, what we saw was a layer of grass jelly that had the rest of the toppings and ingredients securely tucked underneath it. The uninitiated would have thought that we just ordered a bowl of chin chow from some chin chai kopi tiam.

Secondly, completely contrary to its namesake, the YamQ was more like a P in the adage, "mind your P's and Q's". Not only were the YamQs not chewy, they were rather boiled tapioca-like in texture. That's a no-no. The Yam Balls and Sweet Potato Balls were guilty of the same charges as well. The pearls and red beans were what you would expect - normal.

The only saving grace, ironically, was the grass jelly that literally melted in your mouth (especially since we ordered the dessert warmed). Perhaps that was why it was burying the other less-delectable ingredients.

As how student essays normally end with the topic sentence, I would do this review accurate justice to say that this is probably (if not definitely) my first and last encounter with BlackBall. A 4.90 SGD encounter, that is.

Time of visit : 6.30pm
What/Where : BlackBall @ The Star Vista
What we had : BlackBall Signature, Lemon Melon Tea & Sour Plum Tea
Average cost/pax : $11/3Pax
Ambience : Enjoyed the outdoor scenery
Service : Fast as they have plenty of workers;but also because of that there were miscommunications among their staff and I didn't get the additional topping which I specially requested & paid for.
Portion : 700cc for $2.8 - 3 is good. Grassjelly is as good as claimed but personally don't quite like the rest of the topping.
Location : Buona Vista MRT connects to The Star Vista. Convenient. Lots of parking lots.
What's good in particular : Good for small group gathering (if not raining as seat's outdoor)
What's bad in particular : Rattling of train, very small & little indoor seats
