Introduction
Blackball was drawn from the idea of 'Xian Cao' being black in colour and taro 'balls'. 'Xian Cao' is a key inclusion in most traditional desserts across Taiwan. The company was founded and created by Mr. Tang in 2006 and is now one of the biggest dessert chains in Taipei with more than 20 outlets. It has also expanded to Malaysia and Singapore. continue reading

The outlet was next DBS bank, with dine in area. Although there was a couple of staffs around and not much customers around, the place was self-service style. One had to order and wait for order at the counter.Honey Yam Crushed Ice ($5.40)The cubed yam was soft and smooth, encased with a layer of syrup. The crushed ice was rough and hard, and took quite awhile to melt. There was milk under the ice too.Grass Jelly Shaved Ice ($6.50)The shaved ice used in this dish was much smoother, but melted rather fast, even when it was all under the toppings. continue reading

Blackball is Taiwan dessert and have different desserts but I picked the signature one which has chewy black pearls, herbal jelly, yam, pumpkin in the small bowl. I was given a small cup of milk to pour in if I would like to have the milk taste in the dessert. And I guess that's how it is supposed to be eaten in Taiwan. The ingredients tasted fresh because I ever tasted bad pearls and their is soft, chewy kind. Their quality of toppings was chewy and tasted good especially the yam and pumpkin, has a soft texture on the outside and chewy on the inside. Overall the herbal jelly came in big pieces which i like to cut them to small pieces to get hold of the milk taste and eat them. The shop also have a conclusive environment to dine in (: continue reading

Blackballs seems to have gone budget. Gone are the procelein bowls, in replace with paper bowls. The presentation seems to look like a bowl of soup.I had ordered their Icy Signature Glass jelly Dessert. The price was $5.40 and the serving was big enough for 2 person to share. The Icy Signature Glass jelly Dessert had a nice sweet aroma of winter melon sugar. The crushed ice inside also tasted of winter melon sugar. The glass jelly tasted herbal and chewy, not the usual agar agar texture. The yam, radish and sesame balls were disappointing. I could see the colour differences but not the the taste. They all tasted the same, bland and floury. The whole bowl of Icy Signature Glass jelly Dessert was quite stomach filling that I could skip a meal after having it. continue reading

This place is definitely worth the price if 2 people shares one bowl It is also good if you like Taiwan gummy desserts. The fen yuan and pearls are really chewy and juicy. Personally the milk given goes well with the dessert too as it tastes more milky. continue reading

While on the lookout for something sweet, I decided to drop by Blackball's newest outlet which is located in Habourfront. With limited seating area of not more than 20, I decided to pack a bowl back home to be shared with Mr Heng, my forever food partner.Packed with ingredients, it is definitely a bowl which you should be sharing with friends! A mixture of taro balls, red beans, pumpkin and sweet potato balls atop slow grass jelly. You are giving a choice to have it as it is, or to add milk into the dessert to give it a milky creamy taste.I personally like mine with a bit of milk even though it is a little sinfulThe entire dessert is a little too sweet for me, so I guess the next time back I would ask for a "less sweet" option. The taro balls do come by a little too starchy, to the point where it doesnt really taste of yam. Quite a pity since yam chunks would have been awesome!***VERDICTThis is a ok place to head down for desserts if you have a sweet tooth! For me, I think I shall just stick to my favorite traditional dessert stalls in hawker centers. continue reading
