We visited Bruce Café located amidst the lush greenery of NUS U-Town, a Bruce Lee themed café that truly lived up to its name in terms of décor and overall atmosphere. Borsch Soup ($2.80+) The soup was hearty and flavourful, without that Campbell’s taste found in so many other Borsch soups. I found the chewiness of the beef bits complementing the mush greens boiled with the tomatoes in it, with a little bit of sour zest that kept me wanting for more spoonfuls. Hot Plate Pork Chop ($8.80+) I found the pork chop to pale slightly in comparison to the soup, owing to the dry and mediocre texture of the meat which even food stalls in coffee shops far better (thus far). Perhaps the meat was too thinly sliced and hence overcooked on the hot plate it was served on. The sides – which included grilled tomatoes and mixed vegetables – seemingly stole the limelight, for once. I was quite please with their service level (water was refilled promptly, waiter was courteous, response was quick etc…) In addition, the café also spots of a games corner well stocked with popular board games such as Catan, Saboteur, Risk etc…Overall, this is a nice place to simply chill with a group of friends for supper and games. Foodwise, however, there is definitely room for improvement. continue reading

Decided to have lunch at NUS University Town because there are quite a few eateries there such as Subway, Fish & Co Express, Koufu, Wang's Cafe and so on. Bruce Cafe is there too so I give it a shot first before others. It is lunch time 12.30pm and the cafe is not really crowded. The environment is quite quiet and decorations around are so-so but with lots of Bruce Lee's paintings, that's why it is called Bruce Cafe. They have Special Set Menu to choose from and I chose Set D: Luncheon Meat and Egg with Instant noodles which comes with a salad spring roll and dessert. The drink is surprisingly, free. And the drink of the day is Milk Tea so I got that one too. And their dessert is assorted ice cream. No way to choose from their menu of desserts. Fine, since it comes with the set.Milk Tea: Served up first. Like the mug. But minus point: I was getting some sugar for my milk tea and I found ant in it. Total turn off.Luncheon meat and egg with instant noodles: Average taste. Yup I have expected it to be real instant noodles along with carrot strips and vegetables. Plain. As compared to other cafes for the same noodles, their taste are much more different. Maybe it is not just purely those packet seasoning. Salad spring roll: Served cold. The appearance doesn't make it quite appetizing, maybe because it is not brown and crispy enough. Like it is named, there is pineapple and other cocktail fruits in it. Dessert: Assorted ice cream. I skip that because I'm full already. The total bill add up to $7.50 (inclusive of service charge, no GST).Reasonable priced for everything from main course, side dish, dessert and drink. No discount for this set. I will come again if I run out of ideas on what to eat. continue reading
