We order the $14 Cali Cafe Fish and Chip and we waited a whopping 45mins for it and the worst part is the food was not served in sequence. I am very sure me and my friend order our food first (the cashier even key in infront of us as we order direct through the cashier not waitress) follow by 2 other customers who came in later and they order their food later then us. We order the $14 Cali Cafe Fish and Chip and we waited a whopping 45mins for it and the worst part is the food was not served in sequence. Guess what, they are being served first.

I observed for a while and 2 Ang Moh customer whom came in later then a table with Chinese customer and guess what. The food arrive first for the Ang Moh customer than the Chinese table customers. Both are paying customers.

Not a single smile from the Indian supervisor (not surprisingly). The waitress is cheerful but over all service experience is a combination of food waiting time and being served in the right sequence to avoid biasness. To me this restaurant totally fail in their service.

The food arrived and there was nothing special to be honest. The fried fish is very dry and thinly sliced. I got to squeeze all the lemon to make it more moistured. If without the lemon juice to cover the fish, there is a faint taste of unfreshness from the fish. The fries are saltish and the rocket leaf salad totally fail as the salad did not pick up the taste from the black colour sauce. Totally not worth it to pay $14 for each plate of fish and chip with a  waiting time of 45mins and moreover the tables are not full during lunch time and the food are not served in sequence with extreme biasness.

 Having ordered both peach and strawberries, we find that they taste more of yoghurt taste and similar to LASSI which we usually had from the North Indian Cuisine. Nonetheless, I find that drinking them was refreshing.

Despite being a cafe, the main I had, the In Coming Burger with Cheese, was indeed worthy of repeat visits. It was a classic American-style beef burger, with a thick and juicy beef patty, cheddar, lettuce and tomatoes sandwiched between two soft and fluffy buns. Fries, orange wedges and mesclun leaves completed the dish.

 My biggest complaint would be directed at the fries, which were way too salty. I would certainly ask them to hold the salt on future visits. Apart from that, the burger itself was hearty and satisfyingly beefy. Nothing really special, just a standard, timeless beef burger. It was, however, done really nicely, with the patty moist and tender, oozing juices with every bite. The cheddar complemented the patty well, adding a chewy, mildy salty tang to it. Together with the fries and salad, this dish filled me up really well, and I left a happy and satisfied patron.

Soup of the Day
This taste like the usual condensed soup you buy in cans.

Fish & Chips
This is deep fried dory fish (or the cheap sutchi fish) in bread crumbs. We were served pretty deep brown fish (not golden brown), meaning that the fish was over-fried. 2 pieces, served with straight cut fries.

El-Camino Chicken Thigh
I think this is a better choice that the fish & chip. The brown sauce is quite tasty. Served with a hard chunk of carrot, mashed potatoes & another veg - mine was a piece of broccoli, while my companion's was 2 pods of pea.

My Samsung phone's camera always give very intense colours. Actually the broccoli was quite yellowish with only some patches of green, not the bright 'healthy' green you see in the picture.

Coffee & Tea
Free flow, which you help yourself from the counter. Tea are from tea bags.

Given the ambience of the place, the food is cheap. However, given the quality, it is not enough to lure me back again.

The food took a long time to come and we were very hungry. We were served our Wild Mushroom Soup. It was tasteless and watery. We had to add lots of salt and pepper to make it edible. Next came the Baby Back Ribs, Incoming Burger and 12 hrs Beef. There were no utensils set up beforehand and the waiter just walked to my table and dumped all three sets of cutlery on my napkin without saying anything or distributing them. This is supposed to be a restaurant and not a canteen!

I was having the ribs. For $29.90, you would expect a full slab of ribs but only half a slab (six ribs) was served with a side of fries. The meat was tough and did not taste fresh. The burger, according to my friend was alright but nothing shout about. The 12 hrs beef was the only dish that was tasty according to my other friend.

We got to the restaurant and was even more worried because there were so few people there. However, it was a Sunday evening and we thought that might be the reason. We ordered a wide variety of food and also kids meals. All the food was excellent and the portions were perfect, not too small and not too large. I read many reviews that comment on the lack of patrons in the restaurant and I really just don't understand why it's not busier. The prices and food are very good and there is something for everyone on the menu.

Everyone loved his or her food. The smoked Salmon, Steaks, Baby Back Ribs and pulled pork were especially excellent. Sanjay the Chef, came out after dinner to get feedback and thank us for coming. The waitresses were very friendly and efficient.

I will definitely be back. If you ever need a place for a gathering or party, Cali Cafe is the best place for such small events and functions.

So many options in a cozy environment and what we ate were amazing. We eat Pasta and Pizza and pizza was awesome and the best things that when I ask the service crew he mentions the thin crust Pizza base are home made. We all had a lovely evening with great food and good service. Yes the mango passion cake was really yummy and must try after the food. Will definitely come back, and keep the good work guys…..  Being a coffee lover, I couldn't leave without having a cup of caffeine! I ordered a hot Cappuccino and requested it to be serve after my food. I like that it isn't too bland or acidic ^^ Overall, I like the design of the cafe and it's spaciousness. It also fits the 'hidden/quiet' category. Their food and drinks were good but service wise, they really need to do some major reflection!

 This was a dish which my colleagues enjoyed and they all gave their thumbs up to this sinful dish which has cheese and ham as it stuffing in the middlw. A little overfried if you had to pick on this dish.

VERDICT
I am caught in a 50/50 situation. I am not sure if it is worth me heading back since there are so many other good cafes around for me to spend my money at. The food isnt mindblowing good, but they arent bad either. I would still recommend people to try it out, if you would like to go someplace new.

On the constant hunt of brunch places, we recently discovered Cali Cafe on some websites coupled with deals. Although it is located within a stone's throw from my residence, this casual American cafe somehow managed to hid under our "foodie-radar". And so on a beautiful Saturday morning, we decided to give it a try out. Nestled within Park Avenue Rochester in Buona Vista, Cali Cafe prides itself in healthy dining and whips out all-day brunch and popular food choices in California, such as Steak and Fries, and Baby Back Ribs.

Well, we settled down and had our drinks served to us shortly. Food came before we even warmed our seats. While girlfriend had their famous All-Day BDBH (S$18.60), also known as the "best darn breakfast on the hill", which consists of a wide spread of breakfast necessities - toasted bread, bratwurst sausage, baked potato , side salad and a personal choice of eggs (scrambled or sunny side-up), and crispy bacon or honey ham.

 A platter of everyone's favourite breakfast items can hardly go wrong. The scrambled eggs were fantastic, together with the crisp of the toasted slices. Potatoes and salad were fresh and good, just that the latter had an over-powering taste of vinaigrette. It might be contested as "GDBH" (good darn breakfast on the hill), but definitely not the best.

Pulled Pork Bun (S$13.55) is a combination of tender shredded pork, lettuce and tomato slices sandwiched between two soft buns, it is completed with a relatively-strange combination of orange wedges and potato fries. There is no doubt that the filling was satisfying and tantalising, nevertheless, portion and price doesn't correlate in my opinion. After some research, it was found that the sides were used to be fries and salad, and was approximately S$2 cheaper. Oh well.

 Overall, if Cali Cafe wants diners to return for their food, and not only when there are deals, they do have a lot to be improved on, starting with their cappuccino (which they screwed up badly). The probable factors I love about this cafe are the nett pricing for all the food (but again, prices might be factored in already) and their friendly and efficient services.

Until then, the hunt for delicious brunch continues.
