Piperade

Served as a strong fusion of middle eastern food, its dishes is also known as from Europe. Bread is crusty and its Baked egg dish was nice served as a entree for a small course with bacon and number of healthy vegetable such as onions, green peppers, and stewed tomatoes.

Portobello Mushroom Burger.

The burger was average and nothing much special except its tasty cheese and juicy portobello.  Light Brioche bun was nice to use for its burger that served with Portobello
Mushroom, grilled onion and capsicum, lettuce, and tomato. The fries was too salty with too much salt

Seafood Laksa Pasta

Favorite dish of the day! When i rolled the spaghetti with the fork, I could sense the familiar aroma of its heavens laksa. Gravy was thick and rich to form its spaghetti and seafood base with laksa flavor. Prawn is big and fresh in a special laksa sauce

After my first visit to Criollo Cococa for an OpenRice food tasting, I decided to head back there again to enjoy the ambience and also the great view of Orchard from any of their window seats. The smoked duck tasted a bit dry but I think it's because it was over cooked and henced the duck dried up and curled up at the ends of the meat. The views here are truly awesome and I do hope to see more dishes that would attract a regular customer base. The pasta here are so-so, it's not fantastic that I would definitely come back for, but I do see potential in the location and the cafe concept.

The staff were friendly and cheerful, they were happy to help us in anyway they could. Thumbs up!

The chicken yakitori stick tastes great with the meat tender and flavourful. But the beef stick is rather tough and difficult to chew. Guess wrong cut of meat is used here. Similar to other dishes, the fries is a bit over salted.

Chocolate Waffle
The dessert looks not bad. But the waffle is not crispy to my liking. Inside it is not fluffy at all.

Overall the food has more misses than hits. But the food are priced reasonable and the cafe is located at a nice and quiet centralized place. A great choice to relax and chill after a day of shopping. Another thing which I notice is that although the cafe is not full, the staff goes around asking if we need the glasses. Seems that the cafe is suffering from a shortage of glasses. Cannot think what happen if the cafe is full.

i went for my first food tasting with openrice and it was a fun adventure.

these are the food we have tried

a) Big Breakfast (Promo: $12, U.P.:$16.90)
2 scrambled eggs, served with chicken sausage, sautéed mushrooms, bacon (Pork or Turkey), hash brown, toast and fresh fruits in sweet yoghurt.

it's not really big, i was expected the portion to be huge, taste is quite ok, nothing very special in terms of taste and portion

b) Portobello Burger ($12.90)
Grilled Portobello mushroom with onions and capsicum, tasty cheese, lettuce and sliced tomato on toasted brioche bun, served with fries

Yum yum, this is good, if you can only order one dish just get this

c) Seafood Laksa Pasta ($16.90)
Pan fried spaghetti with prawns and squid rings in special laksa sauce

It's a bit spicy but taste quite nice, if you like spicy stuff you will like this

d) Mixed Grilled Platter ($18.90)
Grilled chicken and beef on skewers, black pepper chicken sausages, served with fries and coleslaw

more like a sampler then a platter, forget about this dish

e) Chocolate or Vanilla Waffle ($9.90)
Cocoa flavored waffle topped with chocolate ice cream, marshmallow and dark chocolate sauce (with Maple Syrup on the side)

yum yum, self make ice cream simply irresistable, one scope is not enough

Extra item that was not one the menu are the Mud cake, tea cake and scopes of ice cream.
The cake portion are huge and the price is good, but it is a bit dry,

This cafe is in the heart of the city with a nice view of orchard road, the ice cream are the must have. Cake are huge and cheap but a bit dry.

come here if you want to relax and have ice cream

d) Mixed Grilled Platter ($18.90) Grilled chicken and beef on skewers, black pepper chicken sausages, served with fries and coleslaw
All i can say, is forget about this dish, it was a super big disappointment

e) Chocolate Waffle ($9.90) Cocoa flavored waffle topped with chocolate ice cream, marshmallow and dark chocolate sauce (with Maple Syrup on the side)
Yum yum, super nice and totally worth the money

We also tried some special item like their cakes and ice-cream

Cakes are huge and worth the price and their tea cakes are nicer then the mud cake. If you can only have one cake have their tea cakes

Ice cream are the best, it is make fresh in house.
I would recommend this place for their tea cakes and ice cream with waffles, For main course just go for the Portobello Burger

This tasting session in a way is strange because everyone was quite disappointed until the ice cream comes. They need to let people know what is their strong point.
Just come for ice cream is what i will tell my friends, as for rating for ice cream it will get 5 stars for main course maybe ok or cry only. So because of that i don't know whether to rate them good or bad

The home styled Big Breakfast include 2 scrambled eggs, served with chicken sausage, sautéed mushrooms, bacon (Pork or Turkey), hash brown, butter toast and fresh fruits in sweet yogurt. The scrambled egg was creamy but abit too heavy on salt. The chicken sausage, bacon, hashbrown was normal. I love the concept that they added in the fruit yogurt to round up the wholesome breakfast platter.
However, I will not pay the usual price of $16.90 for the big breakfast set. I have to make sure my money and calories intake is worth the amount I paid. Other reason was that I can simply whip up the Big Breakfast at home at a much lower cost.

I love Portobello Mushroom! The Grilled Portobello mushroom accompanied with onions, capsicum, cheese, lettuce and sliced tomato was making me hungry for it. The overflowing of sauce and mayonnaise made it look super appetizing. I simply cannot wait to sink my teeth into the burger. The moment when we cut into the burger, the juice of the Portobello Mushroom oozes out. It will be perfect if the ratio of the Portobello Mushroom and the Bun is almost equal.
I will recommend you to try out their Portobello Burger. It will be a dish that you will definitely return for.

A combination of the western pasta and our local favorite dish, Laksa. This is one of my favorite dish in the whole tasting event. The al denti spaghetti coated with the special Laksa sauce along with the fresh seafood simply explode in your mouth. The special Laksa sauce was done perfectly with the hint of spiciness and the sweetness of the coconut milk. They were also generous with the seafood.

In my concept of Mixed Grilled Platter was a plate filled with different kinds of grilled meat and a must order for meat lover. This dish was really a disappointment. The Grilled chicken and beef on skewers was dry and tasteless. The black pepper chicken sausages was still alright as it was black peppered. I do not understand why there was coleslaw and the pile of Arugula doing in a mixed grilled platter. Sadly to say out of the whole platter, I prefer the straight cut fries.

A great way to end the dinner with Chocolate Waffles. Instead of those huge fluffy and thick waffles, their Cocoa flavored waffle was thinner but softer yet rich. Accompanied by the Homemade Chocolate Gelato was so irresistible. For a price of $9.90, this chocolate waffle is definitely worth the price and the most value for money dessert in Orchard.

Ever found Orchard Road to be too busy and wanted a quiet corner to people watch on a weekend afternoon? If so, then Criollo Cocoa Cafe is the perfect choice for you. Located at Level 2 of Orchard Gateway, its direct link to Somerset MRT station means that you do not even need to brave that blazing sun! You can expect to find comfort food favorites here such as big breakfast, burgers, pasta and desserts all day long.

My initial impression of the place would definitely be their fanciful name! Mr. Lam, one of the owners, very kindly shared with us that the name was taken after one of the three main varieties of cacao beans. His partners and him took a liking to criollo and decided to name their new business venture after it!

Courtesy of Openrice, I had the opportunity to try out some of their dishes!

Big Breakfast - SGD12

It is definitely happiness on the plate for those who love having brunch! Think scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, sauteed mushrooms, bacon, hash brown and toast! And no i’m not done yet - there’s even fruits with sweet yogurt! I thought this was really value for money. Special mention goes to their toast as it was toasted with butter till crispy and finished off with sugar. Such a simple touch but it made the dish very homely!

Portobello Burger - SGD12.90

One for the vegetarians out there, this burger has a portobello mushroom “patty”. Stuffed with lots of onions and capsicum then sealed with toasted cheese, this makes a very juicy and flavorful component of the burger! The onions and capsicum were a great addition, as it added more layers of flavor. I wished that the filling:bun ratio would be more equal though. The fries had crispy edges filled with soft potatoes on the inside, quite addictive i must say!

Seafood Laksa Pasta - SGD16.90

The dish that I was most looking forward to! Yay to having laksa even in a cafe! I love how they incorporate local flavors into their food for the Singaporean taste buds. Laksa sauce and abundance of seafood - what’s not to like? Criollo Cocoa does not scrimp on their ingredients at all. You get 2 huge mussels, 2 huge prawns and squid rings in your pasta. The sauce was rich in coconut taste, with an appropriate amount of heat which means that almost everyone can have it!

Mixed Grilled Platter - SGD18.90

This sounded so good at first, but when the dish arrived… we were underwhelmed. 4 yakitori sticks, 2 sausages, some greens and a bucket of fries doesn’t match up to what one might expect from a platter. The beef yakitori was on the tough side, while the chicken yakitori was under seasoned. The whole dish just felt like they were forcefully placed together.

Chocolate Waffle – SGD9.90

Finally a dish that is representative of the chocolate-named cafe; their chocolate waffles! Cocoa flavored waffles topped with chocolate ice cream, marshmallow, dark chocolate sauce, strawberries and maple syrup drizzled all over. Made for that sweet tooth in us! I thought that the waffles could be slightly fluffier and crispier, only then would it be perfect for me! The highlight here would definitely be their in-house ice cream, where new batches of ice cream would be made every 10 days. During our visit, they had chocolate, vanilla, lychee, coconut and mango. It was a unanimous vote that the best flavour was the coconut.

The tasting menu we had was quite a good mix of items from the different categories like starters, brunch food, pasta, burgers and desserts. So we had the Big Breakfast to kick start our night. The scrambled eggs, toast and fresh fruits in yoghurt salad was commendable. The eggs was creamy, runny and flavorful; toast was buttery and sweet with sprinkles of sugar and the fruit yoghurt salad was light, healthy and refreshing with a mixture of fruits and granola. & you have a choice between pork bacon or turkey bacon! Really a good hearty combination i would love to have for my breakfast.

Portobello Mushroom ($12.90)
Grilled portobello mushroom with onions, capsicums, lettuce, sliced tomatoes and melting cheese right in between 2 toasted brioche. The portobello was really juicy and tasty; the toasted brioche actually felt quite light and airy with a little crisp at the top. But the brioche feels a little too big on the portobello and make the burger seems like it’s lacking of something.

Seafood Laksa Pasta ($16.90)
Seafood Laksa Pasta is my personal favorite for the night! Pan fried spaghetti with prawns, squid rings and mussels in special laksa sauce. When it was dished out to the table, the aroma was simply heavens. The gravy is so thick as though it’s your traditional laksa reduced to just a small amount of sauce under low heat, locking in the essences of the laksa. Best part was, i’m amazed how the laksa sauce has infused into each and every of the seafood and strands of spaghetti.

Mixed Grilled Platter ($18.90)
The Mixed Grilled Platter was a huge disappointment. I kind of expected for more variety and something for substantial. The platter came with 2 chicken skewer, 2 beef skewers and 2 black pepper chicken sausages accompanied by fries and coleslaw. The upside of the meats was that it’s not tough and chewy but the downside was that, the taste was not that flavorful and spectacular that it can be served as a dish on its own. Somehow it seems that the coleslaw has snatched the limelight away from the meats. The coleslaw was a tad much more tantalizing than the meats.

Chocolate waffle ($9.90)
Chocolate waffle was one of their signature dessert. Served with a quartets of chocolate waffles and a scoop of chocolate gelato drizzled with dark chocolate sauce and maple syrup by the side.  The waffles are towards the soft, spongy type which are more dense instead of the crispy, fluffy kind, which are lighter for the taste buds. It will definitely capture the heart of a chocolate lover. This dessert is suprisingly not too sweet but i find it a little too overwhelming with chocolate for my liking.

Lychee & Coconut Gelato
Lychee Gelato with bits of lychee meat was very light and refreshing, a good cleanser for our palette after such a hearty meal. The coconut Gelato on the other hand was much more intense and rich in flavor. It tasted as though you are eating the coconut flesh itself. But the down side of their gelato was that it’s a little too icy that you could taste some icicles in the bite.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience dining in Criollo Cocoa Cafe, but more has to be done to create more value for the food in order to attract and retain more customers.

Lychee and Coconut Ice Cream - S$3.00/scoop

Criollo Cocoa Cafe concocts their own delicious and unique ice cream. I love their coconut ice cream which is not too sweet and has a soft, smooth texture with coconut flavour. I am not a huge fan of lychee but still I demolished everything on the plate.

Thank you OpenRice for the Food Tasting event.
The group had a wonderful meal and sharing session.
The group was offered the first dish Big Breakfast at a promotion price of $12.  After the promotion period, the dish will price at $16.90.  Curious to know what is hidden in the big breakfast for healthy goer.  It comprises 2 scrabled eggs to fill your belly for the day.  Together sergved with chicken sauage and bean as the meat items.  Hidden in the middle of the dish is the sauteed mushrooms fried with black pepper to go with the carbohdyrate hash brown and toast.  A big breakfast needs to end with fresh fruits in sweet yoghurt.  Well, you are right that the yoghurt has apple cube marginated with yoghurt.  This is served in small cup.

Next excitment is the Portobello Burger ($12.90).  It is grilled portobello mushroom with onions and capsicum, tasty cheese, lettuce and sliced tomato on toasted brioche bun, served with fries.  I would recommend this for vegetarian.  If vegetarian diner is sick of bee hoon, what not give a try to this unique mushroom burger.  Please do not mistaken that it is the modified Buger King or KFC Mushroom Burger.  I would be surprised and pleased to see such a big mushroom sitting on the burger.  The taste is great and juicy.

The 3rd dish is the Seafood Laksa Pasta ($16.90).  It is pan fried spaghetti with prawns and squid rings in special laksa sauce.  This is my favourite dish.  The laksa sauce is sufficient to moist the spahetti.  The prawns are of reasonable size.  I would suggest to take a little colour with berry tomatoes to brighten the dish.

The next dish is the Mixed Grilled Platter ($18.90).  It is grilled chicken and beef on skewers, black pepper chicken sausages served with fries and coleslaw.  I am disappointed with this dish as the meat was dried and not juicy.  There are too much sauage.  I would consider replace the extra sauage with maize

The finally long waiting dish is the Chocolate Waffle ($9.90).  It is cocoa flavoured waffle topped with chocolate ice cream, marshmallow and dark chocolate sauce.  The group learnt the ice cream is made in the restaurant.  The chocolate waffle is not too dry.  I wish the waffle could be a bit thicker. The price is reasonable and it can be on sharing.  The menu can be modified asking the customer for choice of ice cream cream or choice of fruit.

I thank you Open Rice for hosting the event and I could see the happy expression on every Openrice fan having enjoyed wonderful dinner at Orchard Area.

The menu is very simple and clean. It would help if the cafe highlighted their best sellers, or their signature dishes. Since it is a cocoa speciality cafe, I was delighted to see frozen hot chocolate. I haven't had that since I left the states!

The seats in the cafe are well spaced, giving tons of personal space for each group of diners. Something that is not always available in cafes that are set right in the busy district of Orchard Road. I really appreciate them not squeezing tons of tables together.

A great window view of the busy Orchard Road. One of the owners, Mr Lam mentioned that he and his business partners enjoy "people watching" and hence they picked this exact unit. I totally like the idea of sipping a drink, and just observing the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road.

First up was 2 scrambled eggs, served with chicken sausage, sauteed mushrooms, bacon which could be substituted for turkey bacon, hash brown, toast and fresh fruits in sweet yogurt. The BIG breakfast was highlighted by the BIG and very long chicken sausage, it was juicy and had a slight smoked after-taste. Everyone agreed that the fresh fruit in the yogurt was delicious and a much healthier option for a big breakfast. For $12, you get quite alot on your plate!

It's been a long while since I had a portobello burger. I'm a mushroom lover and from one mushroom lover to another, just order this! You will not regret it! The mushroom is so juicy and tender. The toasted brioche bun was executed perfectly, the bun was crispy on all the edges and paired nicely with the grilled portobello.

It's always nice to see a slight Singaporean twist to an Italian favourite. The laksa sauce was very distinctive but it was a tad too spicy for myself, as I normally do not eat spicy foods. The prawns and squid rings were fresh and I enjoyed it!

Usually, when I order a grilled platter, I would expect a lavish amount of grilled meats to clog my arteries. However, at Criollo Cocoa, it wasn't the case. There were just 4 sticks of meat, all of which tasted okay, not fantastic. My favourite part of this dish, wait for it........ the COLESLAW!! No kidding, I cleaned my plate of the coleslaw!

Being a cafe that is named after the source of chocolate, we couldn't wait to try their chocolate waffles and ice cream. The cafe definitely spends some effort into presenting their dishes and the chocolate waffle was no exception. I really liked the chocolate gelato. It was 100% pure chocolate, one of the best gelato I've had in a long while. The waffles were the crispy kind and you could taste the chocolate in the waffle. For $9.90, this is one of the best value for money/good quality waffles in town! The ice cream was so good, that we had no choice by to ask the owner, if we could try more ice cream flavours.

Their cakes are supplied by Pies & Coffee and they are mouth watering! The malt cake was very dense with pure malt and chocolatey goodness. It will take more than one person or even two, to finish this slice of cake. Do not let it's size fool you!

I've tried several earl grey tea cakes and though this is not the best, for the money, it's easily twice the size of what other cafes offer at the same price! Not to mention, it still satisfied my earl great tea cake cravings! Thank You Mr Lam!

We were blown away by the goodness of the chocolate gelato, as such we went on to try their coconut and lychee flavours. The lychee had real lychee fruit in the gelato. It tasted good, but the winner goes to the coconut ice cream. I'm not a fan of coconut, but this is by far the most perfect gelato flavour I have tried. It's not sweet, but yet addictive. It doesn't make you reach for a glass of water to wash down the sugar at all.

This cafe has a hidden secret! They have a gelato machine right next to their ice cream counter. There's no advertisement or illustrations saying that they make their own gelato, after which they throw away unsold gelato after 10 days. Since the ice cream is churned by their machine, there's no preservatives, hence the 10 day life span. The vanilla gelato notably has visible vanilla beans in it! Which truly won me over!

The cafe is nett priced which is a plus! Especially in the downtown area, where majority of the cafes charge service charge and GST. So, please help yourself to the utensils.

Dark Hot Cocoa - $4.80

And I got a cute teddy bear for my latte art. I've seen some cute pictures of 3D latte art on their facebook, but we didn't get any that night.

I wonder if it depends on which barista is on duty or maybe we will need to specially request for 3D latte art or what.

But the drink itself was so yummy! It was pretty rich, yet not overly sweet for the dark chocolate added a nice bitterness to the sweet richness.

Big Breakfast - $19.90

Was tempted to go for their chocolate waffle, but in the end decided to go for the big breakfast instead.... and I'm pretty glad I did!

It was a pity I had to eat so much just after having 3 large fillings done just days earlier at Tooth Angels (both sides has had tooth filled so there's no 'safe side' to chew on) and they obviously still hurt quite a bit when I bite on hard, chewy food. But well, I got through the meal without much discomfort other than having to chew through the crispy bacon and toasts. It's really a shame though, they have the crispiest toast I've ever eaten on an all day breakfast meal. Absolutely loved everything on the plate, but would have preferred my scrambled eggs to be less runny though.
