My ex-workplace organised a dinner and got me to recommend a place that was fitting for the gathering . So as I’ve tried this before in another outlet and found the food is very suitable to the palate of more “elder” people.

Old style steamed fish slices – Fresh and tender fish slices cooked in robust chinese wine with spicy ginger and spring onion.

Duck Roasted with 10 Wonder Herbs (whole duck) – As I’ve tried this in the other Nex branch, the consistency standard of the crispy skin , succulent meat and strong herb sauce.

Baby Kailan with Salted Fish – I specifically asked for lesser oil , the kailan is fresh and crunchy. Due to its original bland/bitter tasting nature, it went well with the salted fish.

Stir fried ee fu mian – The noodles was kinda overcooked and soggy. I thought it’s the usual dry-fried type but this “ee fu” is wet and bland.

Hot plate tofu – Sizzling its way to the table , I could hear/smell it from far. The fried egg tofu is soft and “bouncy” , covered with delicious minced pork and sweet dark sauce.

The meat is soft and tender, the taste of the herbs subtle but still sweet. Even if you're not a herbal food fan, the taste of the herbs does not overpower the original taste of roasted duck. Usually, I do not eat the skin of roasted meats but I simply could not resist the crispy skin of this roasted duck. The skin was crispy and it had just the right amounts of gravy infused in it. What more can I say about the duck? I love it! A must-have when you visit Dian Xiao Er.

Next up, we had the Braised Assorted Mushroom with Broccoli ($13.30).

Nice and simple fare with no-frills. Mushrooms were soft, broccoli were fresh. The gravy was not too starchy as well.

After that, came the soup of the day which was Lotus Soup ($5.80). Another simple and nice dish served quickly. They were generous with their chunks of meat and lotus roots and we were thankful for that.

Lastly, came the Roasted Lamb Grassland Style ($16.90). This dish had a hint of spiciness to it so people who cannot take even a little chili might want to avoid it. As always, the meat was soft and tender. However, I felt that this dish was a tad too oily for my liking.

Overall, it was another pleasant visit to Dian Xiao Er. The servers were attentive and catered to my needs to their best abilities. Even though we went during dinnertime and there was a queue of about 6-7 people before us, we got our table pretty quickly within 10 minutes. Would definitely visit again!

I love how the restaurant is always generous with their small fish, dried scallops and wolfberries toppings. The clear soup was tasty and not too salty. Spinach was sweet and fragrant. The toppings added a well-rounded aroma to lift the taste of the vegetable.

Second dish that came was the Old-Styled Steamed Fish Slices.

I found this dish a tad salty, but the gravy went really well with white rice. The mushroom seemed soaked in the gravy for a long time as it had a brownish tinge to it. Fish might contain small bones so be careful during consumption.

Lastly, we ordered the Baked Fresh Prawns Jiangnan Style.

The prawns looked huge but the meat was rather dismal. Nevertheless, it was juicy enough and upon biting, the taste of the wine comes out and that is the highlight of the Jiangnan dish.

Once again, Dian Xiao Er offers a fuss-free dining experience that never fails to deliver. However, our experience this time was not comparable to the previous few times. When we requested for chopped big chili, one of the servers said that the kitchen does not serve that kind of chili. We felt that this was unacceptable was a reason as it is ridiculous that such an established restaurant does not have one of the basic ingredients for cooking. Upon asking another server, we got our chili. Perhaps the first server was new, but this is not a good reason for her lack of knowledge and can't-be-bothered attitude. This experience was marred by one server but we will still continue to support Dian Xiao Er.

The dining environment is nice too, making the experience an enjoyable one. The price is reasonable too but you need to pay for plain water.

Loved the combined taste of the duck and the herbs. It is not too herb-y and has a taste of sweet in the dish. I always pour the sauce on the rice. YUMMY!!

A very healthy dish with lots of broccoli, carrots and mushroom. The sauce is also very rich but it also means it is probably full of salt.

This has always been their soup of the day. Sometimes I wonder if the chefs are tired of coming up with new soups. :/
The soup is quite tasty. With generous portion of the lotus root, pork with soft bone, peanuts and bits of scallop.

Another of my favourite dish - Chinese Spinach with Superior Stock

A dish endorsed by the National Health Board. Need I say more? The stock is super yummy and not salty at all. Which means it can be drunk on its own like soup.

Gangnam style? LOL.. Although this is a chef recommendation dish, I personally won't recommend this dish. They useking prawn which was quite impressive. But, maybe due to its size and the way it is cooked, the meat was quite dry and tough.
Not very healthy as it was cooked in butter and wine.

Overall, a lovely reunion dinner meal. I was very full after eating so many dishes so didn't have space to try their Osmanthus Jelly Dessert which looks very appealing on the menu.

This is the Roasted Duck with Ten Wonder Herbs ($25.30 for the medium portion). Dian Xiao Er is famed for its signature duck and one does not simply visit Dian Xiao Er without ordering the duck. As always, the duck meat was tender and succulent and the skin was flavourful. The gravy with a tinge of sweetness made it a perfect complement for the white rice. Delicious!!

This is the Chinese Spinach in Superior Stock ($18.30 for the medium portion). It is topped with wolfberries, dried scallops and silverfish. Unfortunately, we settled for the spinach as the restaurant was out of dou miao and kang kong. However it wasn't a wrong choice! The spinach was cooked till it was really soft and the soup was nice and warm on a cold rainy night.

These 2 dishes in medium sizes were more than enough for 2. We could have ordered more dishes if we'd opted for the small portions but who can resist the duck! The restaurant was crowded at dinnertime but food was served promptly. Always a great visit and will definitely come again.

First to arrive was the Baby Kai Lan with salted fish and lime (usual price $9.60, 370kcal for the small portion). The Kai Lan was crunchy and not too overcooked. The lime made the sauce slightly tangy and could serve as a little appetizer. The salted fish was added in small cubes and a mouthful of the kailan with the salted fish can be a little too salty but these cubes can be easily avoided.

Next up was the sesame chicken Hunan style (usual price $9.30, 790kcal for the small portion). This dish is slightly spicy and came with onions and preserved onions as garnishing. Unfortunately, I have to say that majority of this dish consists of flour fried to a crisp and the meaty parts were rather insignificant. But on the whole a flavourful dish and the spiciness added a little kick for the dish.

The third dish was the Fish Maw Thick Soup with Seafood (usual price $16.90, 340kcal for the small portion). This dish is endorsed by the Health Promotion Board as it is listed with the food pyramid logo in the menu. I liked this dish the best as it not too starchy like fish maw soup served in other restaurants. Combined with white rice, it can transform into another dish, mui fan. There are thin chicken slices in the soup too.

Since we went during lunch, it was generally emptier compared to dinner time. Serves were nice and friendly especially one auntie who was really courteous. I like to come here for the Duck with Angelica Herbs but we did not order it this time round. Would definitely visit again and would recommend this to other diners.

Refreshing and light, was a good start to the meal. Lotus roots were of generous serving and the meat inside was actually quite flavorful! There was some peanuts, dried scallop within too.

2. Duck roasted with angelica herbs - $12.90

Filled with herbs, the duck was roasted to perfection. Personally, I don't eat the skin of the meat but this skin was too good to be wasted! It was crispy and some of it didn't even have any fats on it! The meat was soft, tender and aromatic as it absorbed the herbs flavor. I tried some of the herbs and they were surprisingly sweet! Not too sure what kind of herbs are they though.

3. Stir fried bitter gourd and pumpkin -$11.60
This is quite a special dish, never seen it outside before! Bitter gourd and pumpkin was quite a good mix. There were some crunchy things (dont know what are they) and chestnut (?) cooked together. The sweetness of the pumpkin compensates the bitterness of the bitter gourd!

6. Braise mushroom in chinese wine - $10.90
Taste of chinese wine was quite strong but with the other condiments added to make the dish, i felt it was quite a nice touch!
White rice - $3
Best place to have another bowl of rice if you're love eating rice! The rice is very very flagrant and it's always pipping hot! Ask the waitress which brand they use and i believe they said "zhen zhu mi" (pearl rice). Got to go buy it for myself!

Quick tip for the health conscious: there's dishes with the health pyramid at the side and i think they list the calories in the food too!

I will definitely be back for more! (:

Nicely covered with the mild spicy, tangy and full of black pepper fragrance sauce, it is a very appetising dish to have with lots of rice.

One might think that the Wheatgrass tofu will have a 'grassy' taste thus not tasty but no no! There is actually no wheatgrass taste at all despite the green appearance. The taste and texture is just like the common deep fried egg tofu (but do not have as much egg taste)-. The block of tofu was serves in a tasty gravy with broccoli, snow peas, and seafood bits. A very special dish!

Order the famous duck if you're making a trip down! Duck is roasted to perfection and the sauce matches it nicely.
For vege, i would recommend the spinach in superior stock. It has wolfberries, garlic and gan bei (scallops?). I feel that the stock is different from other places, nice tinge of sweetness and it's not very salty too.

Take note that the chrysanthemum tea is non-refillable (we mistook the fact the all tea will be free flow), only the pu er and zhong guo cha is refillable.

The sweet and sour pork was deep fried till very crispy, it did not have any fatty meat at all. The sauce was very good, not too sweet as well. the hotplate tou fu was great, the gravy was very tasty and went well with the rice, it was not too salty as well. the baby kai lan with lime and salted fish has this refresing taste, the lime gave the dish some acidity and made it taste very light and refreshing. We were pretty satisfied with the food.

We tried Duck Roasted with Ten Wonder Herbs which is signature dish of the shop. Like it is famous, combination of herbal and duck is quite delicate and heavenly taste and the gravy is quite smooth dissolving herbal into the meat. HIGHly Recommeded! Our second order was Braised Assorted Mushroom with Broccoli which was also quite delicious ~~ Our last dish was in dismay. I forgot the name... it was like every other spring rolls you can see everywhere but the charge here is like for special dish.

Besides the dishes, classical look of the restaurant and hanging roasted ducks are attractive factors of the restaurant as well. The Chinese tea that they served also quite a nice one.
