Flock Cafe began life as a small family-run indie cafe in 2012, but has sustained itself quite well, still pulling in the crowds even after 3 years. Known for their all-day breakfast dishes, tasty cakes, and excellent coffee from Liberty, Flock Cafe may not have the best food or service, but it's refreshingly unpretentious and rustic.

Ambience at Flock Cafe is modern industrial, with clean, white walls and solid, blocky wooden furniture. The centerpiece is the counter where the tantalizing cakes are displayed behind glass, and the wonderful aroma of coffee permeates the air. Hipster quotes, lomo photographs, and pop culture art by local Singaporeans adorn the walls. Lighting is partly spotlights, partly natural sunlight, and partly low level fluorescent, which makes photography slightly difficult.

Service at Flock Cafe is partly self-service. Ordering and payment is done over the counter, and staff are able to make recommendations. Orders will be served to your table, but otherwise, staff interaction is minimal. You'll also typically have to work at attracting attention if you need anything else, as they aren't very observant.

Food at Flock Cafe is Western influenced, with the majority of the menu being all-day breakfast and dessert cakes. I actually prefer their cakes and coffee over the other items here, as I find it tends to be more tasty. Portions are nicely sized for individuals, and prices are typical of a cafe, budget about SGD $27 per person for a main course, drink, and dessert here.

The Chocolate Cake (SGD $6) is so good! Thick, rich, deep flavoured chocolate fudge, layered across a light, spongy, and moist chocolate cake... it doesn't get any simpler than this, or any tastier! Highly recommended!

2) Pulled pork Sandwich - hubby liked it enough because of the bread though he found the sauce a tad too sweet
3) Mushroom Sandwich - I enjoyed mine very much! Thick slices of portobello mushrooms between fragrant bread slices.
4) Quiche Lorraine - daughter liked it though I thought it pretty ordinary. Ordinary nice, having said that.
The interior decor is very cool, both in ambience and in temperature too. It's a nice reprieve from the hot weather. Having said that, there are also many such arty-farty cafe around the area to check out.

They serve all day breakfast, sandwiches and cakes! Ordered their Scrambled Eggs & Croissant with Smoked Salmon ($14.90) Their croissant is flaky and crispy. Together with the soft runny fluffy scrambled egg and the generous slice of smoked salmon, its heavenly! The smoked salmon may be alil salty on its own, so best to eat it together with the croissant and scrambled egg! Their side salad is awesome too! Crunchy cucumber dices and juicy tomatoes halves in some sort of vinegar balsamic dressing, refreshing.

Won't regret making your trip down.

It was our first time at Flock, and we really wanted to try everything so we ordered 4 dishes to share. We ordered the Creamy Bacon and Poached Egg pasta ($14.90) and we were blown away. It looked really creamy but it was really a full plate of creamy goodness and it tasted real good! Surprisingly, we didn't feel that it was too creamy for us to feel sick... in fact, the creamy pasta was soooo finger lickin good that we wiped it clean off the plate. The poached egg was done nicely and the yolk once we poked the egg just came flowing onto the already yummy pasta. Shiok! There was a lot of bacon, it was good too, but a little bit salty!

The Rocket, Portobello & Cherry Tomato pasta ($14.50) was another great choice! The pasta was al dente, and we loved the springy and spiciness of the pasta, though it could be better if it was more spicy! This pasta is very appetitising and we should mention we just love the pastas here, just judging from these two that we ordered! Pasta menu are only available on weekdays though!

The Banana French Toast with Crispy Bacon ($13.90) is nice too, I guess bananas and bacons make another best combi too! Dunked in maple syrup, the french toast is sweet and delightful! I only tried a bit as I do not really fancy french toast but my friends loved it!

The Eggs Sally ($15.90) is two poach eggs with smoked salmon atop the english muffins. I love the eggs! I cant say much about the smoked salmon as I personally do not usually eat or like smoked salmon, but I tried a bite of the smoked salmon with the eggs and I find it quite acceptable. My friends love the Eggs Sally though!

The omelette is creamy and very satisfying. I wasn't feeling very hungry that's why I ordered this. I kept seeing other people having some smoked salmon sandwich or somethng which looked superb. I'm so gonna go back there. I was satisfied with my omelette that day.

Angmokia’s breakfast platter was great- bacon, sausage, baked beans, 2 poached eggs and toast. Though he thought the latter was pretty small, lol. Oh i forgot, the portobello was sedap! It had this really intense smoky flavour.. slurps.

It was all good value for money. And of course, the coffee was quite good, right notes of bitterness without being too acidic. I like!

Flock Café is one of the more unassuming players in the thriving Tiong Bahru cafe scene. Somehow it feels genuine and laid-back, which can hardly be said for nearby establishments like Forty Hands and Open Door Policy, both of which have amassed loyal cult followings (quite deservedly) and lost their chill factor in the process. Well I suppose crowds are a good thing for cafes to have, though it would be nice to be able to have a meal without feeling like I'm in someone else's way all the time.

These crowds were absent from Flock when we visited one Saturday afternoon for tea. Bit of a welcome change from having to wait in the sweltering heat for a table. It wasn't that the eatery was devoid of people - there was a steady trickle of customers, and the staff looked hard at work.

Portobello, mozzarella & rocket sandwich, $13.50 - Since this was supposed to be tea we ordered one of their sandwiches to share. T'was a pricey sandwich, but I liked that the juicy portobello shroom was so big it occupied the entire pocket of ciabatta. This was quite delicious and would have made a substantial lunch for one, though y'know, the pig in me wishes they had fries on the side.

They have other interesting offerings on their sandwich list like prawn and avocado, as well as pork cheek and gruyere.

Orange bundt cake, $5.00 - Having had a disappointing encounter with a bundt cake the week before, we decided to give the orange bundt cake here a shot. I thought it had a nice citrusy fragrance and crumbled quite satisfactorily, but the others found it to be a little too dry.

Mocha, $6.00 - Flock sources its beans from the ever-reliable Liberty Coffee, which pretty much ensures quality coffee brews. The mocha we had was frothy, chocolatey and every sip was laced with a pleasant hint of bitterness.

In line with their philosophy of providing a "deliberately relaxed" ambiance conducive for weekend catch up sessions between friends, Flock was modestly, yet comfortably furnished and I loved the warm lighting. The food here is above average, and it's a lovely place to spend a lazy day, as all my weekends tend to be. Wouldn't mind coming back at all.

A faraway view of the shopfront
It took us quite awhile to find the Cafe and got reminded of the scene in the Dreammakers, where Jeanette Aw pushed an old lady in the Channel 8 TV show at the shopfront.

A beautiful greeting before entering the shop
It was a pleasant piece of artwork and I felt like this was an art-meets-food-meets-art kind of Cafe. It was REALLY crowded, but one of the female service crew there were really helpful in helping us to find a seat, even moving the heavy chairs and all. We were really famished because it was already 2pm in the afternoon.

An overview of the items we ordered
Here comes the crucial part. The verdict of the food after 40 hungry minutes. We were really famished, and got really angry and upset. 20 minutes into waiting, my friend actually went to ask if our food was ready (because the people who came after that got served with their food).. the waitress simply told us that they're preparing it, but honestly, I really believe that our order got MISSED OUT. No apologies though.

Eggs Benny ($15.90)
Raw pork. I mean, bacon. We didn't really expect that, especially the fact that my friend, who ordered this, isn't a fan of pork bacon. The bacon was perhaps cooked but not very much. It tasted cold and the poached egg broke easily, the entire dish has cooled. The rocket salad that came with it as well had a weird smell too.

Eggs Sally ($14.90)
This was my order. Being a huge fan of salmon and having experienced tasting ALL types of Poached eggs with salmon, my expectations came with standards. It was a huge disappointment because the salmon was so tiny and thinly sliced, and the eggs were really ... cold, it has cooled off, and the salmon had no smoky taste at all. In fact it tasted like raw sashimi. I probably won't come back to give them second chances anymore after the whole ordeal with my friends.

Big Breakfast ($19.90)
We thought that Big Breakfast would have some hope, but only the chicken sausage was nice. The bread was hard and the beans were cold, it probably got left there for really long. We all felt like complaining to the manager but seeing that they were so busy, we thought that they should probably hire more staff or at least have one day off.

All in all, the Cafe was not only squeezy (we had to push the tables to exit the cafe because it was so packed), the food was really a disappointment too.

Really adore the decor of the whole shop and its layout. It's small enough for you to feel cosy, yet not as cramped as cafes such as maison ikkoku -there is ample walking space without having to slide sideways.

We ordered one sandwich and one item off their breakfast menu, as well as their cake. The Prosciutto sandwich was $12.90, the French Toast was $9.50 and the Banoffee was $6.50 a slice.

The banoffee was such a great choice! It was moist, with hints of banana and a luscious, toffee top that was a perfect complement. The toffee was a lovely caramelised color and it wasn't overly thick so the cake still retained its taste of bananas. The cake was really moist and slightly dense - I would have preferred it a bit more light and springy but really no complaints. The taste was great -wasn't too sweet too!

The best part of this sandwich was the lovely, crusty bread toasted to perfection. The parmesan went well with prosciutto ham (stellar combination!) even though it would be slightly dry to some. I do believe that the original taste of parmesan and prosciutto has this slightly dry and flaky feel to it so perhaps it's because I'm used to it. The sandwich was lovely -the tomatoes and lettuce were a definite must too, as it made the sandwich complete. I was a bit disappointed by the lacklustre salad though -ice berg lettuce and 3 cherry tomatoes. Could have been better but ....the salad isn't the star. it was just a detail that I wished they had paid a bit more attention to.

The French Toast was good -the brioche (i'm guessing!) was evenly coated with the french toast mixture and it had a slight aroma of eggs in the mix which was nice. It was pan fried to a lovely golden brown and then coated with strawberries, bananas and a good drenching of maple syrup. Maple syrup always has this sophisticated sweetness to it that isn't sugary and that really made the french toast even better than it already was. Bananas and strawberries are always an excellent combination so kudos to that power combi for french toast. While I agree that this dish is something that can be made at home, it's always nice to know that there's somewhere you can go to for this exact 'feel' when you don't feel like doing the work! Great price too!!

Flock Cafe offers honest, wholesome food in a comfortable setting that you can chill out in. Water is self service so you can help yourself to water with lemon! Brunchtime is also when it gets crowded so be sure to go at odd timings if you want the place really empty!

French Toast $8.9. My first reaction to ordering French Toast was: "What?! I can do it myself!" Yes, I am also a believer of eating what I can't do up at home. I was pleasantly surprised when it came! It was really nice and even with all the strawberries and bananas, it wasn't too sweet at all. Please try this when you are there [:

I was there for a short tea break and only managed to try these items! But, I would definitely be back again for more. Most importantly, I feel that they serve up food and coffee at pretty reasonable prices!

I has their prawns, avocado & lemon mayo. Their prawns are big and fresh, and the overall taste makes me feel refreshed for the day. We also had the scrambled eggs & toast, with additional salmon costing to a total of $13.90 for this dish. I love their scrambled eggs as it is those watery type, unlike macdonald which is drier, which thus moderate the taste of scrambled eggs

I would definitely return to this cafe again for their other food, and to spend my afternoon away in this quiet place
