This steamboat place is pretty good and the price is good. The only con is the long waiting times, specially at prime dinner time as early as 6 pm. You need to have your name down by 4 or 5 pm, unless you have two hours to spare.

It took us a while to find the entrance to Hai Di Lao @ Clarke Quay (a lift tucked in a corridor), but better late than never! The famous steamboat chain from China is well-known for its mala soup base, quality ingredients, stellar service and notoriously long queues. In Singapore, the chain has gone from strength to strength, opening its second outlet at 313 Somerset.
To avoid waiting for hours, I made reservations 3 weeks in advance for Sunday lunch. Upon stepping out of the lift, we were impressed with the superb service. Staff greeted us with enthusiasm and led us to our table. Along the way, I was drawn towards the manicure room (complimentary service) and board game tables. Snacks are provided free of charge and a children’s playroom is available to occupy kids as well.
The restaurant itself is nicely decorated in black and red. Once seated, the waitress assigned to our table handed us aprons, spectacle cleaning cloths and ziploc bags to protect our mobile phones. For ladies with long hair, a hair tie is provided. The sauce, pickles, fruit and dessert counter is chargeable at $4 per pax.
We ordered a double-flavour hot pot comprising of Mala spicy broth and Chicken soup ($22).
We ordered the following in full portions (half portions also available) on the IPad. The food was faultless and oh-so-fresh.
Golden Pomfret ($19), Black Pork ($16), US Beef Slices ($18) and Handmade Shrimp balls ($16).
Fish balls ($8), assorted mushrooms ($18), fried tofu skin ($10), potato slices ($4), bamboo shoots ($7), lettuce ($6) and Chinese Cabbage ($4)
Kung Fu Noodle performance with rock music. Very entertaining!
Watermelon slices and Chilled Almond Beancurd from the buffet counter.
Service was attentive, prompt and efficient, a standout from many other casual restaurants in Singapore with splotchy service standards. What impressed us is Hai Di Lao is the ability to manage crowds well. Our bill totaled to $203 for 4 pax after tax and service charge. Pricy hey, considering you’ve gotta cook yourself.
Other Info. : andmade Shrimp balls, Mala Broth

Hai Di Lao is an extremely popular hotpot spot, queues can easily last for 2 hours. But fret not, while waiting to be served, help yourself to free flow of popcorn, drinks and Chinese desserts. Did I mention, you could even get your manicure done during the wait.

Take lift here to level 2

This restaurant is well known for its extra services provided on top of premium quality food. Free snacks & drinks, manicure, magazines, kids playroom etc. to ease the waiting time blues as queuing time can be long during peak periods.

Manicure service

We had a reservation, so we didn't get to experience those extra services and was ushered swiftly to our table inside.

The restaurant is quite dimly lit inside. Tables are generally smallish in size and not really catered for large group dining. Our party of 8 adults and 3 kids have to squeeze at one of these square tables. The space around the hotpot on the table is so limited that most of our food were not placed on the table but on a trolley at the side. Good thing is that the serving staffs were all quick to serve us whatever we wanted to cook. They even peeled the prawns and de-shelled cockles when we're ready to cook them.

Hai Di Lao definitely provided great services inline with their reputation. Serving staffs were always prompt and attentive to our needs, soup and drinks were constantly refilled, different size plastic bags to protect the mobile phones, aprons for diners, bag covers and hot towels whenever they saw a need to use them. They are always checking with us if we needed anything. Food wise, ingredients are undeniably fresh and of good quality with a huge variety to boot. Coupled with the unparalleled services (for steamboat restaurants), it was really worth the extra dollars paid.

The original Chinese herb base is also great, similar to the one at the popular mongolian Little Sheep. The portion is relatively small, that's the only thing I'd like to see improvement here.

After hearing the epic hype about how great the food/service at Hai Di Lao is, I made a reservation on a Friday night. As usual, it was already crowded at 7 pm but we were well taken care of in terms of having a seat and getting our drinks.

Unlimited serving of fruits, desserts, pickles and 20 over different sauces. Note that this is chargeable at $4 for each person. We were not told about it but we realised after scanning through the menu. So once you take something from the sauce bar, it will automatically charged into your bill. For the broth, we had Ma La and Black Chicken w Herbs. I personally like the black chicken one while the Ma La was too oily and spicy for my liking. Note that 2 soup base is charged at $20 flat. Recommended sides are Select Beef, Black Pork and Handmade Dumplings/Noodles.

After reading, you will come to realise that dining at Hai Di Lao isn't cheap at all. For a table of 2 diners, the bill came up to almost a hundred bucks - but it is certainly satisfying.

First they provide wifi (connection is good), free flow drinks + snacks, board games to keep you entertained while waiting for your table. Should you need the washroom, it's clean and have the japanese style system for the toilet bowl (nice and warm to sit on). A good start already i must say. And when it's about your turn, they will give you the ordering form so once you are seated, food will be served shortly.

Once i was at my table, they gave me a small zip lock bag for my mobile phone and also asked if i need something to tie my hair up! Impressive service =) Thumbs up!

Now it's the hotpot! We opt to have the yuan yang so we chose mushroom and mala for the soup broth. It's nice! Mala is definitely spicier during the initial stage but will get better when you add more soup. I like it when i mix 2 scoop of mushroom + 1/2 scoop of mala, quite nice with a bit of spicy taste to it.

The hotpot ingredients are very fresh which is very important for hotpot. There's one particular dish which is under their specialty - Hai Di Lao flavored beef. Very interesting cause i was told you can cook from start till end and it definitely won't overcook. We tried it and it still taste very good and tender towards the end of dinner.

We over-ordered a bit but still managed to finish it. We spent $72 for the total bill which i find it reasonable for the quality of food, ambience and service.

Snacks on the house for those who have the wait since reservations are not accepted after 5pm on weekends and 6pm on weekdays. Think popcorn, peanuts and crackers to accompany games of chess. For the vainpots, there is free manicures available but the waiting line is long for this.

Crowds like these last through the night, from the moment they open their doors through dinner hour.

Plastic satchets are handed out to store our prized mobiles to avoid accidental deaths in hotpots.

Bibs tossed in to ensure our clothes are kept spotless and cloths for the arm candies too.

Did I mention the hospitality hardly stops there - attentive service throughout the experience and nobody ever rushes you through your meal despite the burgeoning queues outside.

Napkins to clean your hands before the meal starts - the last time I experienced such thoughtfulness was actually in Japan.

The only and possibly main grouse is the touch screen menu. The system does not work that well, keying in orders and locking them in is a hit and miss - to solve all problems just submit them through the waiter to avoid orders being missed or systems cranking up on you.

Table full of condiments and snacks. Condiments are chargeable at $4 per pax but a friend who went claims it is free.

Tomato Soup ($14)
Chicken Soup ($20)

We opted for two broth types to get the best of both worlds - one for their signature tomato soup and the other for chicken. The former was robust, tangy and the ideal minestrone.

So good, I helped myself to several bowls even before the meals started. Chicken soup on the other hand, was milky and less hearty even with black chicken chunks strewn in. Even with mushrooms and fishballs tossed in, it still failed to outshine the tomato soup.

Beef Platter ($22)

Well marbled curls served in a platter that made us all belly happy.

Vegetable Platter ($18)

Pricey vegetable platter though it may seem more worthwhile since ala carte vegetable pots were going for $6 onwards each.

Bamboo Shoots ($6)

Adored these! Each bite was fragrant and had a lovely juicy bite.

Pork Balls ($5)

Just be careful of their longer than necessary cooking time, mine were barely a third cooked when I sunk my pearlies into them, otherwise really awesome meat balls.

Black Pork Belly ($6)

So good, I had them fats and meat all.

Handmade Noodle ($3)

The theatrics that goes behind the noodle display is worth the 3 bucks - the dude comes around with dough, flips and flaps and swings it all over, pray hard his grasp of distance is accurate else end up with a powdered face.

Fried Rice ($3)

Well just egg and rice fried in the wok, not for the picky.

Following the Fish and Co experience with complimentary mints. Loved these touches!

So long, my return will not take long! A completely new dining experience with fresh ingredients and delicious food, worth a visit for sure.

If you wanna come for steamboat and dont wanna queue for at least 45 mins to an hour, you can try walk in at around 5pm. Dont worry if you need to queue for that long as they provide origami papers for you to fold some crane or you can eat longan and drink some tea ( not recommended lol as you need to make ypur stomach empty for the good food). Oh and yupe there is a free manicure service too

staffs were very friendly and they even offered hair tie and zip-lock bag for you to placed your handphone inside to prevent it from becoming dirty.
Also, if you ordered hand made noodles, you will enjoy live performance of chef making those noodles right in front of you while eating.

A very pleasant experience from this restaurant. Will definitely come back again!

Numbing and intense ‘Mala’ was very exciting for the tongue but harsh for the stomach. Fresh fishballs were succulent and bouncy, thinly slice shabu shabu pork tasted superb after bathing in the spicy mala soup. They skewered their fresh prawn for customers convenient for cooking, peeling and eating. I normally don’t eat pig liver but after being told that it was tasty with the mala soup I gave it a try and fell in love with it as the strong mala mask the bloody taste. When eating mushroom and vegetable remember to put in the non spicy soup cause if drop in mala the vege will absorb the oil from the mala soup and turn into a oil sponge.

I tried to make a dinner reservation several days before the weekend but it was already fully booked. Landed on lunch instead.

The signboard was prominent at the building facade. Took the elevator to level 2 and the restaurant will be on the right. The reservation list was written on the board and the wait staff + patrons could see it at a glance.

We were ushered to our seats quickly and was asked what drinks we would like. It was our first visit and we had no idea there was a choice for free flow of drinks until we ordered a coke and barley. I noticed it after looking though the ipad menu and informed the staff to cancel my barley and ordered the sour plum juice.

The ingredients which I personally thought it was exceptional were the beef and shrimp ball. The beef was marbled beautifully with the fats and it literally melted in your mouth. The shrimp ball was bouncy and it ain't those supermarket type that tastes flour. I could taste the shrimp in every bite.

In general, we paid: -
$16 for soup base
$8 for the 'salad bar' which had 3 choices of fruits, a pickles and seaweed.
$6 for the free flow drinks
$90 for the food

The soup base was no doubt excellent. Food presentation and freshness checked. In my humble opinion, most important factor in hotpot is the soup base. I am willing to pay for a good soup but to pay at the tagged price for mushrooms and veggies was not something I would do. The salad bar had limited choices which i do not think it is worth $4ea. I would hope the restaurant will consider a single price for veggies & shrooms option and go ala carte for the meat.

Both my husband and I could eat quite a fair bit in hotpot session, I guess the ala carte style wasn't suitable for us.
