I have previously gone all the way to Malacca just to eat their chicken rice balls, so when I heard that it is also available in Singapore, I had to give it a try. While in Malacca, I was told that people first eat rice balls instead of rice served in bowls, due to convenience and to keep the rice warm. Malaysians make their rice balls very sticky and compact, and I love it because I feel it has some effect in concentrating more flavours together in a smaller bite. The size of their rice balls are also approximately that of a fish ball, with its surfaces smooth. So now let's look at Singapore's version of Chicken Rice Balls:Chicken Rice BallsTastes good. However I find the size of the rice balls too big, and the rice is not compact enough. It is sticking out in all directions (surface not smooth like that of a fishball), and when I picked it up, the rice ball came lose. I ended up "dismantling" and eating rice ball like a normal bowl of chicken rice, which defects the experience and purchase of eating rice ball.ChickenTastes good. The meat is rather juicy and tender.Although this stall serves relatively good chicken rice, my experience here was just like eating the normal kind of chicken rice rather than going for their selling point of the chicken rice ball. continue reading

Singaporeans love chicken rice, there will always be a chicken rice stall in a food court and at coffee shops. This chicken rice stall located at Jalan Besar, oppsite Sim Lim Tower, near Sim Lim Square. The stall is different/special from the many chicken rice stalls in Singapore. What is the difference? The stall name is Hainan Chicken Rice Ball, well the name clearly states why it is different/special - rice ball.I ordered the Chicken Rice Set which consists of 2 rice balls, steam chicken, pork belly and a bowl of soup.Just before serving, the Chicken Rice Balls were shaped into balls. Each grain of rice was soft, hence it was easily shaped. Moreover, the rice balls were fragrant as the flavours of chicken, garlic and ginger were infused into it. The 'White' Chicken was different from other stalls. It was skinless and boneless. Moreover, black sauce was drizzled over it. Despite the chicken being dry, it was amazing soft and tender. As for the Pork Belly, it was soft, tender and fatty. Black sauce was drizzled over it too enhancing its already flavourful taste. I am not a fan of pork belly, hence did not enjoy it. But I am sure for people who enjoy pork bell, they will like this! The set came with Soup. Normally, chicken rice soup are full of MSG. Well, this was a black colour soup that had distinct herbal taste. But, honestly speaking, I have no idea the type of herbs were used or if herbal ingredients were used. Overall, a very unique stall that is certainly very different from the other chicken rice stalls in Singapore with it's own character. The downside is that do note that it can get pretty stuffy (warm) as this is a old coffeeshop. In addition, the coffeeshop is not exactly clean. The rice ball is quite sticky for me and i love my rice to be fluffy. But i do admit that the taste and fragrance of the rice is nice. For the chicken, it tasted tender and juicy but normal. continue reading

The rice is shaped into a large ball and for me, I didn't enjoy it as much as I imagined. I like my rice to be fluffy but because this is shaped into a ball, the rice is mashed and sticks together. The fragrance and taste of the rice is nice but I just preferred my rice to be fluffy and distinct instead of mashed together. As for the chicken, it is very tender and still quite juicy and sweet. It is nice trying it out just for the experience, but I would prefer my normal chicken rice on a plate. continue reading
