We would unlikely visit again as there are better and more authentic Korean restaurants around the vicinity, and most importantly, at a more pocket friendly price-tag.

Hence, I decided it was time for another Korean meal in Singapore. The traditional looking Hansang Restaurant is resplendent in shades of white and beige, light wood furniture and a cosy setting

Chicken Bibimbap came - served with a fried egg - the ones I ate in Korea came with raw / semi-raw egg which I could mix easily into the bowl of rice and vegetables. I loved the spicy Kimchi taste and large beansprouts of Bibimbap (hot stone bowl with rice and assortment of vegetables) but for the one served here, I did not get much Kimchi overture, so I had to add them from the array of side dishes. The overall combination when mixed together, still tasted pretty good.

Then the Korean Ginseng Chicken - very tender chicken flesh that was mentingly soft, and tiny grains of glutinuous rice reckoned into a hot Ginseng brew. The taste was very bland - we did not know if it was because it was meant to be so, or if our tastebuds were conditioned to enjoy the bolder Ginseng flavor in Chinese Ginseng brew.

What a put off lunching at Hansang Novena. This is the first korean restaurant that does not top up kimchi because we ordered lunch promotion items.
It started when I requested to the manager to top up our kimchi. He looked over my table, and saw my wife was having the ginseng chicken soup which is for lunch promotion. He just told us flatly we are not entitled to because we are having the lunch promotion.
I was puzzled as i ordered my set from the main menu but before I could make further clarifications, he hurried to take the order for another table.
I then signalled to another waiter for kimchi but when I saw him taking the kimchi over, the manager stopped him.
Upon clarification, I was told the set I order was also lunch promotion..
I spent over 40 dollars and don't think we should be penalise by our orders. After all, how much can I small plate of kimchi costs?
Things just went downhill. My coffee were not served despite me requesting for 3 times. The manager just brushed me off on my 3rd request saying it's coming. I then saw him going over to the counter to ask them to prepare my coffee!
Having said that, my wife still enjoyed the soup.. But service does counts a lot. I am definitely not patronising here again!
Good thing I am not Gordon ramsay, else I am pretty sure he will get the four letter word...

Happening hot food section has my favorite kimchi fried rice, fluffy rice covered with tangy and sticky kimchi sauce. Different kind of traditional Korean dipping for us to choose to go with BBQ meat that is not marinated. Superb.

First, the bbq skewer that we order did not came as described by the waitress .. Instead of 2 sticks each of chicken / beef / cuttlefish and pork.., we got 3 sticks each of chicken / pork and 2 sticks of cuttlefish and asked for a change.

The waiter brought the entire dish back to the kitchen and returned 10 mins later with the same dish explaining to us that the beef stick will take some time to prepare. By then the skewers have gone cold... i complained about this to the manager.. The manager again brought the entire dish back to the kitchen a second time!

When the dish was brought to us again by the cook herself, she just conveniently placed the beef stick together with the rest of the cold bbq skewers.. I was patient enough to remind the cook that she cant expect us to consume the earlier bbq skewers that have gone cold.

She returned with the bbq skewers, reheated and overcooked saying.. " Are you okay? Its now HOT." Without even a glance at us, she just walked away.

The manager simply brush off this matter by waiver the charges to this dish without an apology..

If you love to eat really quality and juicy ribs, the ribs served here will certainly delight you. The presentation is neat and nice and the portion is quite generous as will. Once you barberqued it, you will be able to enjoy these juicy and tender meat straight from the barberqued stove. The different types of spicy sauces served here also goes well with their beef as well.

One part of the restaurant is reserved for those having Korean BBQ and the other part is solely for diners not having the Korean BBQ. This separateness is great because you don't walk out smelling of bulgogi

We had:

1) Samgye-Tang ($23) Ginseng Chicken Soup - really really delicious. The soup was delicate and clear, with the delectable earthy aftertaste of Korean ginseng root. Red dates sweetened the soup base lightly, while gingko nuts lent a luxe touch

2) Side Dishes were all yummy. My favourite Poached Spinach was simply flavoured with sesame seeds and soy

3) Pickled Radish - although looks super red, was really not spicy at all. A little paprika as sprinkled for sweetness on the crunchy chilled radish cubes

4) Beansprouts - clear and refreshing

5) Lotus Root - well braised, flavoursome and crunchy, served chilled for a refreshing touch

When the first servicing came, I was feeling disappointed that the varieties of side dishes in Korean cuisine have shrunk to just 3 small portions on a single plate. It turned out that the restaurant served some sort of Amus Bouche which was unexpected for a Korean restaurant. It has potato salad, anchovies (Ikan Bilis) and black peas on the plate. Both the potato salad and anchovies were ok but nothing Korean. The black beans were hard which I do not really know how to appreciate it.

The pancakes were a bit tasteless to me but they were nice and not too floury.

Ginseng Chicken which is known as Samgyetang in Korean is a summer dish that consists of a whole chicken stuffed with glutinous rice and cooked in Korean ginseng broth. At first I was worried that the soup will be too heavy with ginseng flavour but it turned out not. The chicken was also nicely cooked and tender.

I have never eaten Mackerel cooked in Korean style and I love it a lot. It was my favourite for the night. I think I ate three quarter of the dish alone. However this dish is not suitable for children. There were a lot of fish bones and care has to be taken eating this dish.

The Bulgogi Pork was a bit small in portion and tiny sliced. It came with a plate of lettuce so you can wrap the meat with the lettuce and eat it as a whole. The lettuce gave the dish a freshening texture and balanced the oiliness of the meat.

If you enjoy having the korean kimchi, the version from here is very easy to eat and is one of my favourite dish when i visit this restaurant. The cabbage used is very crunchy and fresh, which has been marinated really well with the traditional chilli paste and vinegar. Great to have it with noodles or even on its own. The portion may not be generous but the quality is able to cover this short coming.
