ee my full reviews & photos at = http://chefquak.com/2015/04/10/hong-wen-mutton-soup/drop by at hong wen mutton soup at bukit timah food centre on the way to meet a friend on 10.4.2015. apparently the stall previously from beauty world centre has been around for decades. closing time was 2.30pm & i was there nearer 3pm, anyway the owner served me the last bowl before shuttering the stall.it should be good, unfortunately it was the worst mutton soup i had tried. will never come back again! the soup was tasteless except for slight unnatural sweetness of herbs. usually this is balanced by the savoury & robust flavours of the mutton so the soup should be smooth, herbal & very tasty & intense, everything that this was not. i asked for mutton & stomach. the mutton was soft. there were few for S$5, and basically tasteless even with the chilli. currently for the chinese mutton soup i have tried, chai chuan tou chinese mutton soup 柴船头羊肉汤 is head & shoulders above the rest. the 2 stalls at whampoa, yu ji (宇记) chinese herbal mutton soup (羊肉汤) & Herbal Mutton Soup @ Stall #01-75 Whampoa Drive Food Centre were both good. the stall hougang jing jia mutton soup at old airport road was until today the poorest of the lot. but still better than this one! continue reading

Hong Wen Mutton Soup has been around for quite sometimes maybe 2 to 3 decades or even more. I still remember my first taste of their mutton soup had got me hooked. Located at the roof top of beauty world centre lies a good childhood days in my memories. The bowl of rich and well balanced herbal soup was sweet with distinct chinese wine taste. With coriander and strips of ginger added, it had reduced the mutton's smell in Nature, also giving a good punch in the flavour of the soup. While the Indian Version of Kambing Soup (Mutton Soup) is best to go with bread dips, a bowl of chinese mutton soup is best to go well with the plain white rice.Serving was generous with good chunks of meat and ribs seen. Unlike the Indian Mutton Soup, Chinese version tasted more herbal and healthy, not as oily. Traditionally, Chinese believed that Mutton is classified as "heaty" meat, therefore I would normally skip such dishes during hot weathers. The fats of the meat were trim leaving little or none which was quite good to patrons who are health conscious.Besides the mutton soup in Bukit Timah Food Centre, I think Hong Wen Mutton Soup is still the best so far. continue reading

The FoodI ordered the Mutton Soup with rice and the flavour of the herbal soup was very well balanced, slightly on the sweet side with some taste of Chinese wine topped with only some ginger and cilantro to add more punch to the soup. The serving decent with big chunks of mutton and ribs pieces. The meat was cooked to perfection and was very fresh and tender soft. The PriceReasonably priced at $4.00 per bowlOverallI will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this! continue reading

Frankly speaking, this is my first time tasting mutton soup, since I always disliked the strong taste of it. I was only persuaded to do so by my friends who loved the taste. The soup tastes quite herby and I could taste some wine. I didn't like the taste of the cilantro, which is why adding that did not plus any points for me in the taste of the soup. However, like I mentioned, my friends who liked mutton soup enjoyed it a lot. The ingredients were quite reasonable for its price, with quite a few pieces of the mutton given. I tried some of the mutton and fount it to be very tender and quite fresh tasting. Mutton soup lovers should definitely give this a try. continue reading
