After finishing processing our passport making , feeling hungry so went to this hawker centre whereby there was a zi char stall named Hui Wei Chinese - Thai cuisine. So we decided to order some dishes sweet and sour pork , four season beans and fried rice. The thing about huiwei is that everyone will tell you to try it -Try to fish head, try the lotus root vegetables, try this try that. But the truth is, when you actually see the menu of the place, you wouldn't know what to try. Everything seems like a good bet. That night, we decided to stick with all our favourites: Steamed fish head with cai por, fried lotus root with mixed veg and fried calamaries.The service here is really good, and the dishes came super fast -much faster than I'd expected. The fish was the last to be served, but it didn't take too long either.This dish is the most interesting of the lot. Deep fried lotus root fried with french beans + celery. The deep fried lotus roots are thinly sliced and taste more like potato chips than anything else ..Not even kidding here!! Fried with green vegetables it's delicious! Tasty, refreshing and every bite a crunch of texture. Must try.The deep fried calamaries aren't overcooked, it's crisp on the outside and the batter isn't flourry. It's served with a sweet chilli sauce, but we suggest that you ask for another sauce instead -the coriander sauce. It's green ...blended with coriander, green chillis and probably some garlic and lime. More delicious and refreshing -also complements the calamaries more than the original sweet chilli sauce. The one thing that impressed me about the calamaries was that even when cold, it was still good.The steamed fish was probably the most worth-it of the lot. Huuuuuge fish head, loads of meat, very little bones (important because I dont like my fish with too many bones...picky in this arena), topped with fried cai por, garlic and a light soy sauce that complements the sweet freshness of the fish. The meat is fresh and light, and eating it on its own has a certain flavour that's indescribable.The rice is 50cents but for 50cents you get a huge mound on your plate and it's guaranteed to stuff you up. For such prices, the food here is really worth it. Don't recall the exact prices but we spent close to 40ish on this meal for 3 people. Freshness and tastiness guaranteed. This recently opened Zi Char stall at Blk 802 French Road coffeeshop near Lavender MRT station woks up delicious Chinese-Thai Cuisine. It definitely distinct itself from the rest of the competitions around the vicinity in offering a combination of Chinese and Thai style cuisine. What got me more excited is the chefs are from the popular Thai Zi Char stall at the basement of Sembawang Shopping Centre. It definitely gave me the assurance these guys are not new kids on the block. Being located at a coffeeshop, their extensive menu are very reasonable and value for money.The Xiang Di Mi Fen or Crispy Fried Noodle is a popular noodle dish in Malaysia. The noodle was first deep fried and served over a gravy full of seafood and vegetables. This is my first time having the noodle dish and I really enjoyed it. Look at how big the serving was and it costs only $3! The dish is not on the menu so you have to ask the stall.The Braised Pork Shank was a surprise to me. It was soft and tender with a bit of herbal taste. Usually you don't find it at Zi Char stall as it takes long hours to braise the meat until soft and tender. The Deep Fried Eggplant known as "Mei Ren Yu (美人鱼) or Mermaid" Eggplant is sliced into french fries shape and size. I still could not figure out why it is called Mermaid Eggplant but it was really very good. A lot of people do not like to eat eggplant because it turns mushy when cooked. The Deep Fried Eggplant was not mushy at all. The sweet sauce coated around the eggplants and the anchovies lifted the dish further in taste and texture.The Thai Style Fried Cuttlefish or Calamari was big and firm. It also came with a sweet chilli dip sauce.The Thai Style Honey Chicken which I could not find anything Thai about it was rather average. It will be a kid's delight with the sweet honey and tender chicken meat.The Signature Fish Head is a best try. For a mere $15 you get a large fresh fish head with a lot of meat. The delicious sauce which was a bit sour and spicy was specially made from vegetables.Zi Char stall offering Pineapple Fried Rice on their menu is quite rare. Hui Wei's Pineapple Fried Rice was really good and fragrant. It came with a generous serving of pineapples, shrimps, char siew, egg and pork floss. I read a food blogger’s entry on the stall and she didn’t seem to be very enthusiastic about the food. But wow! the food was good! and quickly cheered me up! So warm for the tummy tum tum on a cool day!The stall, situated in an old kopitiam, with lots of old uncles around–old neighbourhood mah, me ah beng like the atmosphere! so comfortable, can chew with mouth open—is near Lavender MRT and Jalan Besar Stadium, which kinda reminded me of 14K because he works nearby. :~( My emo tear.The first dish was “美人鱼” eggplant or mermaid eggplant ($7). I know it doesn’t look 美 (pretty) right? BUT you’ll be blown away by the taste! Hookerlily’s favorite dish – so addictive! It reminded me a bit of honey lemon fried fish, but it was more sweet with just a very small tinge of sourish. It retained its crispiness throughout our meal and as crispy as potato chips. There was an aftertaste of dried chili in the mouth so you just feel like putting another piece in..and another piece…and another. It would go so well with beer! If only I drink. Ah Beng who don’t drink beer=#fail.Boss told us that this is one of the three dishes he and the chef created themselves for the tv show 创意料理 (Creative Cooking). He didn’t say if they won, but if they didn’t win, then the winning team can be Michelin restaurant already.The second dish the chef and he created is Signature Fish Head ($15). Look at the humongous size of the fish head! For $15 only! I felt like we were robbing the stall. This was Chiobu’s favorite. She said the flesh was very tender and the sauce! OMG. It was so unique, this is the only place you can eat such a sauce. We asked the boss what sauce it was–so delicious and appetizing–he said it was blended vegetables with celery as the main ingredient. Chiobu said, “DON’T BLUFF ME! I’m chio, not stupid! Where got celery inside??”I know some people dislike the taste of celery but do you know it takes more energy to disgest celery than the celery contains itself? and it fights cancer, high blood pressure AND bad breath! If all these reasons don’t convince you to eat celery, then this sauce will. It didn’t taste like celery at all. It had ZERO vegetable taste and was slightly limey, very slightly spicy, slightly sweet with just a very, very mild bitterness that most people won’t notice. It’s 酸甜苦辣 all in it! It’s like life! A very good way for difficult children to eat their vegetables. My whole collar of my t-shirt is wet as I am writing this entry because my saliva is dripping. Yummilicious!Thai Styled fried cuttlefish ($7) on the menu… or calamari! After the two awesome dishes, Chiobu and Hookerlily were, “eh… so-so nia.” I kept quiet. Then they turned to look at me and I looked down at the table. They said, “Don’t tell me you like this dish!!!” Peer pressure leh! How to respond?I’ll give you reasons why I like it. Thick flesh, little flour, not oily at all. And the accompanying sauce–which tasted like Indian rojak chili sauce–was hot. Come on! Which stall will actually cook a fresh batch of sauce for you??? How considerate was that! I agree that the squid by itself was a little bland, but it was a good contrast to the very flavorful first two dishes. It was really not bad, and in fact, it’s better than most mid-range restaurants, and Hookerlily agreed that it was better than Merry Men, a place she loves.Chiobu suggested they should serve it with mayonnaise. Actually, it would be awesome if they can create a tom yum mayonnaise.Fujian mian, or Hokkien noodles ($3). This was our least favorite–but then again, I never like Hokkien noodles. To us, it lacked salt (but 8 out of 10 Singaporeans eat too much salt so it’s good for us it’s not salty). But Mao Mao absolutely loved it. He said, “Mao Mao xi huan!!! (likes) Veri smell lice (fragrant) andz got many zhu you zha (lard).”we voted and decided to give this stall a high rating. The food was fantastic. Even now 6 hours after eating, my tummy feels so cozy and warm, like snuggling under the blanket on a cold day.…查看更多
