There was another starter of Buffalo Wings (SGD$9.80) - deep fried chicken wings with Ice Edge's own secret spicy herb sauce. The wings were rather well done with crispy skin and juicy, tender meat. The secret spicy herb sauce penetrated the wings very well too, giving it a very delectable flavor that piques the senses instantly.

I had the Fish and Chips (SGD$16.90) which was pretty common fare consisting of crumbly battered exterior and soft, smooth interior. The fries were pretty common shoestring fries as well.

The friend and I popped over to Ice Edge Cafe with the intention of trying out their interesting-flavored lava cakes - one being Mao Shan Wang (durian) and one being the Rum Chocolate. Unfortunately, we were informed that the latter is no longer being served at all, even though it is still listed on their menu.

Non-fazed, we decided to try other items since we had made it all the way here. Ice Edge Cafe boosts of a rather warm setting in its orange and black hues, rather much a stark contrast to its name. The tables are situated rather close to each other, and the service is rather slow / irresponsive contrary to their "friendly service" belief on the website. But to be fair, please note that Ice Edge Cafe does not charge service charge.

Their Gelato counter is marvelous though - very colorful assortment of uniquely-flavored ice-creams starting at SGD$3.75 a scoop. There were so many flavors we were spoilt for choice, and took some time to choose from the range of exotic flavors such as hazelnut coffee, chocolate brownie, salted egg yolk, yuzu, lychee martini, rose corn, etc.

Known for its unique flavors and sauces created from scratch, and proclaimed "great food" , we decided to try a Crab Bisque (SGD$8.50) and on their "Best Seller" list, even though we had taken our lunch elsewhere. The rather creamy soup was rich in a smooth fashion, gliding silkily past the tongue with tinge of sweetness and slivers of (frozen) crab meat scattered on top of the piping hot soup. It wasn't fantastic, but passable.

he signature Mao Shan Wang (durian) Lava Cake (SGD$14.80) was what we had next, and one of the items we had come here specially for. The "lava cake" was more like a durian puff, and the lava had already flowed out when they served it to us. There was no durian fragrance in smell or taste, disappointingly - I'd tried lovelier durian desserts for sure. The scoop of Chocolate Brownie gelato we'd selected on the side was rather delicious - rich and creamy with chunks of nuts and brownie bits in it.

For dessert, we tried the Lava Cake (but I'll be back for their infamous waffles). The thing I appreciate about Ice Edge Cafe is their unwavering standard and attention to details like this. The Lava Cake took a while to prepare and although the chocolate didn't ooze out as much as I'd hoped, the taste was pretty phenomenal. You get to choose the flavour of Gelato that comes with the Lava Cake, so we chose one that would pair well with the immense load of chocolate on the other side of the plate - Cookies & Cream. A good choice we made, I must say.

Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake - $14.80

The mao shan wang lava cake was special because of the durian "lava" oozing out. However, I felt that there was not enough of the durian filling within. $14.80 was also quite pricey for a rather small piece of cake, even though it came with a scoop of ice cream of your choice.

Chocolate Lava Cake - $12.80

The chocolate lava cake fared a bit better, for there was more chocolate sauce oozing out. However, I felt that perhaps better quality chocolate could have been used.

Waffle with 2 scoops of ice cream - $14.50

The waffle was crispy and went well with the ice cream.
We got to try quite a few flavours of ice cream due to the several desserts we ordered. They were generally ok, not exactly fantastically good though. A chocolate-based ice cream is a better bet. I liked the premium yuzu ice cream but my hubby found it to be a bit weird-tasting due to the particular fragrance from the yuzu and also that it was a bit too sweet.

The interior is very welcoming with the warm, orange, cozy setting with setting with low-hanging lamps and contrasting dark flooring and chair. It give it a homely, classy feel yet keeping the tone of the atmosphere casual. The seating space is very spacious too with huge sitting capacity to accommodate from couples to big groups of 8 to 10 paxs.

Over at the Gelato counter, the chiller display seems really attractive with bright and vibrant colours, showcasing their huge range of gelatos from classic vanilla ones to different variants of chocolate to fruity range and even alcohol infused ones. Looks great but I was turned off by the rude foreigner staff who gave me a cold look I asked to try a few flavours before making my order. After 2 times, she pretended not to hear me anymore and ignored me. Only when I am ready to make my order, she took my orders.

I had 2 scoops of gelato, a Peach Yogurt (Normal - $3.20/scoop) and another Kiwi Lime (Premium - $4.80/scoop) which cost me not only $8 but it took me by surprise that they charge 7% GST to their gelato toos, so the total cost was a whopping $8.56 for that tiny cup! Having paid that much, I expected their gelato to be fantastic but to my disappointment, it melted quickly and for the Kiwi Lime flavour, the taste of kiwi was very mild as the sourness of lime has overwhelmed the nice sweet, tangy touch of kiwi. On the other hand, I find the Peach Yogurt flavour only average and the taste of peach was only decent and not fragrant enough. Having such low standard, it is very ridiculous that their gelato cost much more than other premium Italian gelato places like Alfreo Gelato which is cheaper and better.

Not really enjoying what I had, my friend recommended that I try their signature Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake ($13.80) which is said to be their signature. Indeed, cutting the soft fluffing layer of the Lava Cake open, decadent hot durian paste oozed out. It was a sight to behold as it was my first time having such a dessert. Durian flavour was really awesome and delectable with a smooth, milky texture. A scoop of vanilla ice-cream was served next to it and when eaten together with the hot durian lava, it was simply so luscious and heavenly!

Although I came and was disappointed with the gelato and saddened by their poor service, their Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake won my heart and I left happy after that. I may visit this place again if my friend is driving me here because getting to Simon Plaza is not really convenient by public transport.

Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake - The cake was soft with a very strong fragrance of durian ( Mao Shan Wang filling was flowing out of the cake when i cut it open) . It also comes with a gelato of your choice. i had chosen the Rum & Raisin ice cream, and trust me, one can really get drunk as the alcohol taste was quite strong in a good way.

My favourite items from Ice edge's menu -their handcrafted ice-cream. It's their Rocher and Mao Shan Wang Durian.

Restaurant Interior
Nothing much has changed over the years - the restaurant expanded, but the bright orange walls and furnishings still remain at the centre of the restaurant interior.

For lunch I picked one of the recommended signature dishes from Ice Edge - the Seafood Aglio Olio which really gave me mixed signals. The seafood weren't really the freshest as advertised. While the single mussel was more dry and lack-lustre, the prawns though succulent, weren't cleaned out during prep. What won me over was really the pasta, which as al dente and had that perfect mix of oil and spice that I like with my aglio olio.

The durian-chocolate combination is just hard to beat. And both flavours being strong, not 1 of the flavours would be drowned out by the other and you'd be able to enjoy aromatic durian and delectable chocolate by the spoonful.

Overall, a meal at Ice Edge Cafe's not cheap. But it was enjoyable especially when it came to the desserts. If ever there was a reason to head back, would be the signature Molten Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake. Molten Chocolate Cake there's aplenty, but a melted durian core? =D
