I like my noodle medium and slightly springy. This time I tried their Wanton Men. I was disappointed with the amount of the prawn in the wantons. it did not even add up to one prawn. The soup was slightly salty and the pork belly was over-stewed.We were served with a very energetic waitress! Good engery, Good service and Great smile! If you ask me if it is worth it, I would tell you to try just once.

Ramen at Ippudo has always been my favourite as they are one of the best japanese restaurant that really can cook really nice and fragrant creamy pork stock for their ramen. Before I visited, I heard many good reviews about them. After my first visit - which I was impressed - I have been back at least thrice, bringing different friends to introduce them to the delicious ramen served here. This outlet does not allow reservations, and it is not uncommon to see long queues outside the popular restaurant, especially during lunch and dinner hours. The good thing is that the lines are usually cleared very fast.

I have tried several types of Ramen here before, but let me share the two most memorable ones. The wonderful thing about their noodles is that it consists of fine strands, springy, and the service crew would ask for "Doneness" of noodles - hard or soft. Yes, this is the unique point of Ippudo's ramen - usually I opt for harder noodles.

First, the Shiromaru Special - original tonkotsu (pork) broth served with thin noodles, pork loins, cabbage, kikurage and spring onions - on the side are flavored egg, tender pork cube and bamboo shoots. I absolutely love their soups, regardless of which type of ramen I eventually end up ordering. They are always in-your-face delicious, flavored at full blasts, and non-greasy. Being a fan of flavored eggs (their "braised egg" is rather different from the other Japanese restaurants' - the inside is tenderly raw while the outside is hard-boiled) and bamboo shoots, the entire combination makes for a really hearty meal.

I also love their Spicy Black Pork Ramen -I would add the flavored egg as this does not come with it. Another blend of scrumptious soup base, quality thin noodles, bamboo shoot and best of all, black pork. Somehow, black pork has a luscious, delectable taste in additional to its extreme tenderness. I am usually not a fan of pork, but I do enjoy black pork. The tastiness of black pork cooked with delicious broth and noodles, makes for a very gratifying meal.

Seasonal Ramen ~ Kyusyu Miso Tonkutsu - $17

Ippudo original pork broth with blended miso, mild in taste. Cabbage, japanese leek, spring onion, pork belly, pork loin, flavoured half egg

This was recommended by a friend who I bumped into at Mardarin Gallery. She just finished her meal at Ippudo and recommended me to try the seasonal ramen.

Frankly speaking, I'm not too sure what it means by "Seasonal Ramen"...

~ Is it seasonal as in the period, i.e. you probably get different ramen variety at different period, depending what ingredient is available in the season?

~ Or it's just a name for that particular ramen?

Hmm... dunno leh....*Shaked head vigourously*

The soup base was much sweeter than the other ramen that I had tried before. I loved it so much, I finished every single drop!

The noodles was springy, cooked to perfection. As for the egg, I think Marutama's still hold the crown.

On the right: Rare Cheese Cake
On the left: Cherry Blossom Ice

Well, even though we were really full, there was always space for desserts!

The desserts variety is not a lot, but we decided to order for the more unique ones, based on the names.

The cheese cake was not the typical Amercian rich cheese style, nor the Japanese fluffy sponge type. Instead, it was very light and tasted almost like tofu, just that it was sweet. The cherry blossom icecream was refreshing, tasted a bit like strawberry ice-cream.

Most of the tables are big, so there are often strangers sharing tables and I thought it's weird.

Over at the counter, it's tastefully decorated with red and white utensils at the top. The chefs were busy cooking and the waiters and waitresses were shouting "Irrasshaimase!" and "Arigatou gozaimasu!" all over the place. So, only the noise is very authentic. XD

I had Shiromaru Tamago with medium hardness ramen! You can choose the soup, ingredients (add some $$) and the hardness of the noodles!

It is rather salty despite its looks. The chashu is a tiny bit hard. The ramen is really nice though, springy and nice to chew. The egg is pretty well done too! Not so cooked on the inside (yolk) but cooked fully on the outside (white). I love it!

When we left, there was still a long queue which goes to show the popularity of the shop. So, go early, have punctual friends (they only let you sit if all people in the group has arrived) and you won't have to wait long.

The ambience of this restuarant is quite average, if you are looking for a restaurant with nice ambience, this will not be the one. As for service wise, the staffs are quite friendly and attentive there.

After doing my 'research' online, ie by reading various reviews on blogs as well as food websites... I decided to pay Ippudo a visit on a Thursday late afternoon.

There are a few types of soup base you can choose from . There is the Shiromaru Classic which is tonkotsu soup ( pork ) , the Akamaru Modern which is the same pork broth but enhanced with their special miso paste ( see photo below--the red/orange paste in the middle ). There is also the Shoyu ( soy sauce ) and Ippudo Karakamenwhich is served with a spicy paste. After reading so many reviews
it was Akamaru for me! It was served in a red bowl

You can choose to add on the egg, and pork belly ( two slices ) to your ramen ( $17 before taxes ) . The server will ask how you would prefer your noodles to be done- hard, medium or soft.. I chose medium
I hate noodles that are too hard and soggy.. so medium seems to be the right choice and yes it was
I finished the whole bowl

Black fungus , two slices of pork belly ( yums!) lots and lots of spring onions (If you want to sound abit atas- scallion) special blend of miso (has minced meat), pieces of cabbage.

A closer look at the broth, it is thick and flavorful with garlic oil.

I love the soup.. it has crunchy onions in them too! I had a great time picking them out.. has three of my favourite! Spring onions, onions and garlic

I was disappointed with the egg though, I had better ones
this isn't perfect... some parts were overcooked. I would have preferred that they serve, the egg separately in a dish and also to half the egg for us..

As I was alone, it seemed impossible to be ordering any other side dishes or desserts.

My late lunch/ early dinner consisted of the ramen and a cool glass of ice lemon tea. I was set back by $23 after taxes. Service was prompt and smiles were aplently. Well it may be different if it it during the peak meal time periods.

During meal times :
Prepare to be seated in the communal dining area and prepare to be overheard.

The whole dish is very fragrant and delicious

The noodles and pork belly are very yummy having soaked up the broth

Not forgetting the egg, always the runny shoyu york that has captured my heart, made it a point to always make sure that there's the egg!!!

We placed our orders while waiting for my friend. I decided to try the original tonkotsu, shiromaru motoaji ($15), which is just the normal one with cha-shu, cabbage and spring onions. You can choose to have the one with egg but it costs $3 more. We also get to choose how hard we want our noodles to be, hard or medium. The waiter recommended us the hard one but I prefer mine to be soft so I don't have to chew so hard! Anyway we managed to get a table of 4 as we saw the people leaving. At around 6pm, the queue outside was crazy. We were so lucky to be able to get a table!

Personally I feel that the ramen is quite ordinary and not as good as what my friends said. But I have to admit that the broth is good, although abit salty, and I had to keep drinking water. Since my friend ordered the hard noodles, I tried it as well. I didn't think that there's much difference between the medium and hard one though. The ingredients in the ramen was just normal and for $15 I think it's abit steep. And it doesn't seems very worth it for me to queue again next time.

By saying so, the area is actually quite small. However, they fully utilized their tables. They have long tables and yes, you have to share table with other people.

There are a few choices for their soup base and the ingredients that you want in your ramen. I ordered the IPPUDO Original tonkotsu. With the addition of the flavoured egg, it cost $3 more. Since i really loved the flavoured eggs, i ordered it but i find it quite expensive. There are other add ons that you can add, such as the cha shu, etc. What is unique is that you are able to choose the texture of your noodles, whether you want it medium or hard. The waiter actually recommended us the hard type but i goes with the medium since i like my ramen softer. The soup base was nice. However, i find the bowl of ramen quite expensive. Even though they have the fine dinning atmosphere, the bowl of ramen is not that worth of the price of $20.

Very swiftly, my choice of drink was served. I tried the Choya with Lemon (Choya is fixed and you can choose from a few flavoured soda). Choya with lemon tasted more citrus and gassy, and it actually leaves a slightly dry aftertaste.

Halfway through the dinner I got to try another drink - Umeshu with Cranberry, and this time I was bought over.

Umeshu with Cranberry is definitely stronger and smoother with a hint of fruity taste thanks to the cranberry. It leaves a slightly stonger alcohol aftertaste. I prefer this drink to the previous one because I like how smooth the drink is. Choya with lemon is a little too gassy to my likings due to the soda that was paired with the choya.

Goma Q
Fresh Japanese cucumber with sesame

Start off the meal with a refreshing appetizer, Japanese cucumber coated with Ippudo's sesame sauce. I find the sauce perfect because it comes with a tangy and spicy taste. The only complain is that the cucumber was a little too thick, so the taste of the cucumber very quickly overwhelms the sesame sauce after much chewing.

Pork Bun (recommended)
Steamed bun with braised pork and Ippudo's original sauce

If you are hankering for some braised pork but not served in a pool of ramen broth, try the Pork bun at Ippudo. This deceptively simple sounding item turned out so well, no wonder it was one of the best seller and many diners' favourite. The pork bun comes with a smooth soft bun sandwiching the succulent braised pork, drizzled with Ippudo's original sauce.

Spicy Shrimp Mayo (Recommended)
Lightly battered deep-fried succulent prawns served with home-made spicy mayonnaise dip

At first glance, the size of the prawn and the way this appetizer was displayed already won many hearts. Dipped in a spoonful of spicy mayonnaise, the huge fresh prawn itself was crunchy and juicy.

My apology for recommending so many dishes, but most of them are honestly my favourite! This is especially for the beef tataki.
The beef tataki are medium-rare wagyu beef slices. It goes very well with the tangy sauce on the side, if not the soya sauce that comes with it. In fact, it taste as good consumed on its own.

Surprising to say this but the original ramen (Shiromaru Motoaji) itself already possess an extremely rich and thick broth that suggests how long the broth has been boiled. That said, it doesn't require any additional miso paste or anything and it's marvelous on its own.

Akamaru shin-aji
Ippudo's original broth enhanced with the special blended miso paste and fragrant garlic oil. Served with thin noodles, buta bara (pork belly), kikurage and spring onions. A refined, modern-style ramen.

This time, the second ramen has additional miso paste which added a saltier taste to the broth. Instead of Chashu (pork loin), Buta Bara (pork belly) was used for this ramen. I personally don't prefer the broth to be so salty. So it really depends on your preference actually. If you prefer a much stronger and richer broth (saltier), you can try the Akamaru Shin-Aji.
