If you haven't eaten in the basement of Peninsula Plaza, you're missing out on the most authentic Burmese food outside of Myanmar! There are a few choices, but my favorite is Irrawaddy Restaurant which has the nicest ambiance and some of the best food. I'm no expert on Burmese food, so I usually try a few new things every time I visit -- tofu fritters, mohinga noodle soup, Burmese pork curry. It's kind of like a fusion between Thai and Indian food and most dishes are pretty yummy. However, what keeps me coming back is the pickled tea leaf salad.My boyfriend and I have tried to identify what goes into this dish and have concluded it contains peanuts, shrimp paste, tea leaves (duh), chili, and lime juice.. but that's probably only half of the ingredients. It's a rollercoaster of tastes and textures - highly recommended!The prices are excellent too at around $4-8 for more dishes. They also do great value set meals, especially at weekday lunches. And, of course, they sell Myanmar lager You probably won't fall in love with Burmese food, but it is a really unique dining experience.
