It was my first time trying out korean cold noodles and it wasn't really to my liking as I prefer food with stronger flavours. The buckwheat noodles were kept cold in the light-tasting ice cold broth. This dish was topped with shredded cucumber and egg. The cucumber gave it the extra crunchy flavour and was juicy too. Portion was quite filling. It sure is refreshing to have a cold and savoury bowl of noodles on a hot day though!

There were lots of side dishes that came with it. We had the seafood stew. There were maggi, cheese, hotdogs, clams, prawns, tofu, spam, and kimchi in it. While the side dishes tasted more to the salty side, the stew was good, with just the right amount of seasoning. Portion was just nice for 2 pax, but not very filling. Seafood tasted fresh but there were some grainy texture when I bit into the clams. Overall, it is worth a try

Decided to give this Korean restaurant a visit since I was around the vicinity for tea. I have heard many raves of the food there and heard of the queue that would form outside the restaurant during dinner time, but surprisingly, when I passed by the place at 615 and 645 respectively, there was no queue. I guessed they had opened a few branches to meet with the demand, thus explaining the no queue situation. As usual (like what we always do when we dine at Korean restaurants), we ordered bulgogi

The side dishes were served shortly. I was amazed by the number of side dishes but I guess quantity doesn't mean quality. The cabbage kimchi was just cabbage in chilli powder and the cabbage was very yellowish and brownish, unlike what the other restaurant served. It wasn't as flavourful nor as crispy as the one I usually have. It looked like some kimchi that u get at Korean food stalls in food courts.

Beef Bulgogi. The beef was tough and dry. It wasn't marinated so it was tasteless. The sauce for the beef bulgogi lacked sweetness although they had onions and leeks. I guessed it was because the onions wasn't cooked so the sweetness of it was not brought out to complement the beef. Very disappointing because I have had better beef bulgogi in Serangoon Gardens.

Pork Bulgogi. The pork was slightly better than the beef but still tough. I dun remember having such tough meats elsewhere. I think because of the difference in sauce, the pork bulgogi was sweeter. But nothing spectacular nor memorable.

Overall, it was a very very disappointing experience at Kim's Family Restaurant. It was famed and credited for it's authentic and great Korean food, but I guess, maybe they are not that great after all given the fact that that they couldn't even manage a basic korean dish like the bulgogi. There are certainly many better Korean restaurants out there, so I really think it's time for them to up their standards.

Ginseng Chicken Soup ($20++)
I like this a lot as it is very authentic, light yet flavorful. And no MSG is added in this soup. The chicken is well marinated and the meat is so tender.

Kimchi Pancake ($14++)
Very flavourful! the pancake really taste like kimchi. However you gotta eat this fast as it doesn't taste as nice when the dish is cold. Also, 2 of us could not finish this as it has a huge portion.

After calling for bill, the staff served us fruits and refreshing tea.

Overall, we are very satisfied with the food here. Most of the staffs there are korean which I really like as it somehow make the restaurant more authentic. Haha. I will be definitely be back in future to try their kimchi hotpot ;D

Kim's Family Korean Restaurant, otherwise known as Kim's Family Food, has been attracting crowds for years with its hearty, generous portioned dishes, reasonably low prices, and up to 10 sides dishes (banchan) served with every meal ordered. It's popularity is such that in any conversation of the best / top Korean food in Singapore, Kim's Family Korean Restaurant is sure to come up.

Ambience is the weakest point of Kim's Family Korean Restaurant. The extremely poor ventilation of the place means you'll come away smelling of food no matter how long you visit... The smell of cooking hits you the minute you step in! Plus points include the creative grafitti wall, where you can scrawl your own creations, and minimalist Korean inspired decor. Layout is spacious, and lighting is sufficiently bright. Furniture is functional, but not very comfortable, and the menu looks old. It's a testament to the good food of Kim's Family Korean Restaurant that diners are willing to brave the poor ventilation and smell of cooking!

Service at Kim's Family Korean Restaurant is friendly and casual. Staff are relatively young, but polite, and food is served quickly. During my visit, there was a slight mixup in our order. Not only did the wait staff come to apologise, but the chef as well. Thumbs up for the service recovery at Kim's Family Korean Restaurant! Product knowledge is fairly good with the experienced staff, but the more junior staff may need more training and familiarity with the menu.

Food at Kim's Family Korean Restaurant sticks to traditional recipes from South Korea. Portions are generous, make sure to order a small portion for 1 or 2 people, because the regular portion is more suitable for 3 to 4 people. Prices are relatively cheap and inexpensive, with each main dish costing around SGD $20. Each main dish is accompanied by unlimited servings of 10 side dishes / banchan. Suffice to say that dining at Kim's Family Korean Restaurant means you'll never leave hungry! Water is also complimentary.

All the food are cooked in a way that preserves the authentic Korean homecooked flavours and one can feel the chef's love from the dishes. We love everything, be it jajangmyeon, bulgogi, bean paste soup, seafood pancake, bibimbap or meat dishes.

Best of all, there's no service charge(!) but one is often inclined to leave some tips after experiencing such great service and a largely satisfying meal

Next, we had the Samgyetang which is basically Ginseng Chicken Soup. You get one small whole chicken and there is glutinous rice stuffed in the chicken. The ginseng taste is not that strong and there are a lot of spring onions in the soup. Not a bad choice if you're craving for something that isn't too heavy, warm and soupy.

Lastly, we had the Japchae. This is a good vegan choice as the noodles is made of sweet potato. You get carrots, black fungi and a big pile of noodles that can easily feed 2 people. In my opinion, this japchae has more soy sauce taste than the one at Hansang (The Grandstand), which feels lighter. However, it is still a tasty dish.

We got the Jajangmyeon. It is a noodle dish topped with a thick black sauce that is both sweet and salty. You also get some soft carrots and cucumbers with the noodles. I recommend this with some soy paste chili that the restaurant provides at every table. This dish also came first as it seems fairly simple to prepare.

We also got the Hot Stone Beef with Mushrooms. This dish came still sizzling and steaming hot. You get some golden mushrooms and some shiitake mushrooms as well. The broth is sweet and you can really taste the beef essence. You also get some tang hoon in it so it's unnecessary to order another bowl of rice unless you're a big eater.

Kim's is conveniently located at a stretch of shophouses. You can visit the Korean Lotte Mart after your meal or head down to Udders for dessert.

How many side dishes did they serve us? 13! Including 1 whole small fish! Hubby asked me whether we should keep the ones that we wanted and returned them those that we didn't want. Haha... I replied him that each side dish cost $1, must finish them all up. Of course, I was just joking along with him. I also didn't know whether we need to pay for the side dishes, but definitely it is not nice to ask them to take back the side dishes. We looked around at the other tables, they all had so many side dishes on their table. I wondered if I were to dine there alone, I just order an ala-carte dish, will they also serve me 13 side dishes for me?

Ginseng Chicken Soup ($17)
The soup was not salty as they didn't add in any salt. Thus, it was pure ginseng taste and I thought it was nice, very authentic (If you don't mind the bitterness). I needed this as for the past few days, I felt tired easily so I guess this was a good nourishment. Inside the chicken, they stuffed in glutinous rice as well but I didn't quite like that. I just took the soup and the chicken meat.

Kimchi Pancake ($10)
This kimchi pancake was very tasty, could feel the crunchy kimchi. However, it came in very late, about half and hour later when all our side dishes and chicken soup were served. Initially, we thought that they had forgotten our order. When it was served on our table, we were already so full and we didn't even manage to finish up the chicken
In the end, we could only finish up half the pancake... So wasteful right? Thus, next time, must come with a bigger group to minimize food wastage.

After we finished our food, they also served us a small cup of ginger tea each and 2 slices of watermelon.
Hubby went to the counter to pay for the bill and I asked him how much the side dishes cost.
ALL FREE, and also NO SERVICE CHARGE for such wonderful service!

Service aside, I had the Chicken Bulgogi Set ($12++), which is a huge portion! There is way too much meat to finish on my own. The chicken is tender and well marinated, but a bit spicy. In addition, their side dishes are refillable. The potato salad with apple is very nice, and we had 4 refills of that.

After hearing much raving reviews about the food and authentic Korean dining experience Kim’s Family restaurant offers, we finally decided it’s time to pen down our own experience and visited them for dinner last Friday.

Alas, we were left yet again disappointed by a restaurant which had garnered a rather good reputation among food reviewers…

As we had only ordered one Beef Bulgogi Set ($12++) to share, we were shocked to find out that we could only selected 6 side dishes and it’s non-refillable! When queried, the waitress coldly answered “cos you all only order one set…”, simply unbelievable level of service for a Korean Family restaurant that is renowned for their hospitality!

The side dishes were average and served in pathetic portions, a far cry from many other Korean restaurants we had visited (and mind you, we ordered one portion of main dish at other restaurants as well and were warmly served with all the side dishes – refillable).

The beef bulgogi set was nothing much to shout about as well. It was well marinated, no doubt, but tasted pretty similar to what other restaurants serve.

Here's where you can find authentic home-cooked styled Korean food. Fast turn over. The lady boss is polite and works at high speed. She can do multitasking and I'm amazed at the rate she is going. Being the cashier, the waitress, the cook, plates collector, she can handles everything in the shop, name it.

Ambiance
It was very crowded during dinner time. Since the lady is multitasking, the environment is fast paced with queue outside the restaurant and cashier queue. Thus as people crowd around in the shop, it tends to be a little squeezy.

Price
Price is reasonable and not too steep. Good to bring your parents here if they want to try out some korean cuisine.

Recommendation
Be prepare to have a thorough shower after this meal. Like any other Korean style place, your body will kind of stink with BBQ smell.
