honestly, i was a tad disappointed when i was there. although it was a lovely space and the cakes were quite yummy! (: i'll tell you why along the way.

tiramisu: a very light mousse-like cake. dig deeper for the alcohol!!

souffle milk tea cake: a very unexpected flavour (: it possessed a slight hint of a tea aroma and was very light.

strawberry cake: the sweetest of the three. even though the texture was mousse-like, similar to the other two, the strawberry flavour was infused into every bit of the cake (:

i was surprised that the cakes were SO tiny. and for an exorbitant price of around $8-$10 if i remember correctly. and when we reached there at 4pm, they told us to order asap because it was their last round of cakes...but they're supposed to open till 7pm? O.o i wonder what they're gonna do if they sell out before then! the service was also a little iffy. i mean, in general it was pretty good because the staff helped us to get an extra table and chair because of our large group, but at times i felt that they were just a teeny bit rude.

also one thing to remember is that these japanese cakes are really light! because of their mousse texture, they're very airy and aren't substantial at all. i guess for a lady-like tea they'll do ;) but the staff actually recommended us to get 3 cakes for 2 people. i'm not telling you not to visit this place, because their cakes were undoubtedly tasty. but just keep these things in mind, and manage your expectations, and be prepared to spend.

Not only does Kki Sweets sell cakes (& mousse), they sell knick-knacks too. Classic items, pretty cute objects and sometimes oddities. So while shopping for cakes, feel free to look around for intricate yet simple souvenirs for yourself. One thing to take note though, is that getting seats can be a chore. Only able to sit around 15 in the shop (and about 8 outside of it), you must be in luck to tuck yourself in the shop comfortably. Furthermore, when patrons come here, they have the intention of taking their time to sip tea and complete their tai-tai high tea routine. Thankfully, my dining partners and I were in luck this very Saturday afternoon.

Though the staff can appear stern at the first look, she was surprisingly helpful. We were at the counter browsing at the sleekly decorated cakes when the staff offered to go through the cakes and mousse they offer. She went through each and single one, displaying top knowledge on the products. She rejected our order on a Chocolate Cake, saying that if it was our first time there, try the mousse, which is their specialties. Of course, we followed accordingly and ordered 3 mousse.

Little Red Riding Hood (Dark Chocolate with Raspberry Mousse) ($9+) :: Best dessert of the day. The mousse you get here at Kki Sweets is not the usual. If you’re a mousse hater, you should try one here, because that will potentially change your take on them. It is the smoothest and softest, most delicate mousse I’ve had, not forgetting flavorful. This sparkling gem had our umpteen approval. The raspberry can turn some off, but its sour touch to the very thick dark chocolate package makes it easy to finish. A must try.

Coconut with Passion Fruit ($8.50+) :: Again, don’t be fooled by it standing tall, I nearly melted together with its softness. Like its Dark Chocolate Mousse, its filling (this time, passion fruit) is slotted in the middle section of the cake. As compared to its above counterpart, this pale in comparison.

White Chocolate with Mango Mousse ($8.50+) :: Similar, this piece of mousse doesn’t hold a finger to the winning dish of the day. But oh well, its texture was enough to make us go cloud nine and happy, for whatever reason.

Despite not having a clean sheet of good food, it’s still a definite go-back for me, thanks to its serenity and ambience it offers. I’ll be sure to head back and try their other selections. They offer Gryphon Tea to go along with the cakes and mousses too.

This cafe sells an array of artisan cakes with a wide range of different flavours but staying true to their specialty of light and airy Japanese inspired mousse cakes. We came here on a Saturday afternoon for tea and was honestly quite spoilt for choice, faced with many displays of beautifully crafted and designed cakes in front of us. Delphine who was the lovely lady at the counter was quick to suggest a few of their popular items and even suggested the order in which we were to eat our cakes so as to not let the varying tastes and flavours overpower each other.

The Antoinette was a white chocolate mousse with a mango centre. Affectionately named after The Little Drom’s Store owner- Antoinette, the first forkful of white chocolate mousse was incredible- extremely light, airy and not heavy at all unlike most white chocolate products. And the icing on the cake or rather the centre of the cake was reaching the mango puree part which was thick and luscious, this was seriously good cake.

The Emily aka the Angry Birds cake had a bright bold red exterior with a Champagne mousse and wild strawberry centre. The subtle Champagne taste and the sweetness of the strawberries was a celebration erupting with the taste buds. Definitely one to buy for the Valentine, your date will surely approve.

We had the Little Red Riding Hood last, probably because it was the richest and most overwhelming especially with the bitterness and intensity of the dark chocolate used in the mousse and the exterior. With its gleaming and shiny chocolate coat topped with a single fresh raspberry and a dust of icing sugar, it is not difficult to see why chocolate lovers call this a favourite. Using Michel Cluizel chocolates as a mark of quality, the Little Red Riding Hood can and probably will give most chocolate mousse cakes a run for their money. Not forgetting the lovely raspberry centre as a sweet contrast to the bitterness of the dark chocolate, this was indeed memorable.

K ki Cafe with its little connecting vintage drom store is fast capturing the hearts of many dessert lovers with their winning formula of Japanese baking techniques and emphasis on light mousse cakes that they have become so successful at making. This place is in a league of its own and Im sure with its uniqueness and experimental flair, it will be here to stay for a while.

I wanted to try KKI which I heard so much about. I ordered their signature cake item, Little Red Riding hood for a start and felt it's more quality over quantity, but the taste is so creamy and strong, you wouldn't need a lot of it to feel heaven! Ambience wise, the place is small so very limited seats. You're better off parking your car and tabao/eat in the car. The staff are very friendly and well versed whenever I had questions regarding each cake.

After our lunch at Maxwell Market, we decided to take a slow walk and do some photography around the area. When we reached Ann Siang Hill, I decided to google for the address of Kki, a cake shop which I had read in many blogs.

Kki is a small little patisserie with only 4 tables inside the shop for the customers. There are another 2 tables outside the shop. I asked hubby to sit at the table outside first while I would go in and place our order. When I reached the counter, I asked for the beverage menu first since I already knew what cake I wanted to order (I am a chocolate lover!). The lady boss immediately highlighted to me that in order to dine in the shop, customer must order at least one cake. Seriously, I was a bit put-off by her statement as I thought this should not be the way to welcome a customer to your shop. Anyway, I humbly explained that I already knew about the varieties of cakes that they had and I just wanted to have a look at the beverage menu.

Anyway, I ordered a glass of jasmine gryphon tea ($3.50) for myself and a cup of latte ($4.50) for hubby.

I must admit that their cake was really good. Very rich and dense chocolate with a raspberry core. I was really tempted to try other pretty cakes but I don't quite fancy take-away. Clumsy me might crush the cake on my way home.

(+) Really rich, bitter-tasting dark chocolate, similar to Varlhona chocolate.
(+) Could taste the difference in fine ingredients used.
(+) Unique taste combination and very well balanced.
(+) Bitter initially followed by well complemented mild sweetness and sourness (from raspberry)
(+) The raspberry filling in the middle of the mousse gave a varied mouthfeel to the overall sensation, with it tasting raspberry gelatin-like-jelly with a blend of the fruit.

(-) The lingering bitter taste from the chocolate could be too strong for some.

The silky smooth looking exterior masked the strong abundance of flavours that this petite cake contained. It was however a love or hate relationship with the dominating bittersweet (think 70% bitter 30% sweet) taste, which might proved to be overwhelming for some.

Antoinette
White chocolate mousse with a layer of sponge cake and mango puree filling.

(+) The velvety white chocolate mousse was very smooth and light.
(+) The white chocolate was only mildly sweet which suited our palette for the afternoon.
(+) When consumed in entirety with the mango puree, it was a divine combination.
(+) Mango puree was like the rest of the ingredients, pure and rich, unlike those essence flavouring commonly used.

(-) The portion of mango puree was really intended for 1-2 mouthful bursts.

Kinabaru
Coconut mousse, passion fruit creme, chocolate dacquoise.

(+) It was a light-flavoured cake which wouldn't make you feel gelat (sick) after eating.
(+) The tangy mildly sour passion fruit creme provided a refreshing burst of flavours.

(-) The cake was too mild in its coconut taste, was certainly struggling to fit the name and description of the cake to its taste. (passion fruit covers the coconut taste)

Due to the shape of the cake (i.e. elongated rectangular), the cake disengaged itself and seemed to tilt to one side. Just to note, due to a full stomach, we reserved the cake in the fridge for consumption later in the evening and upon opening the box, noticed the irregularity of the cake. This could probably be attributed to the distribution of the layers of the cake, perhaps proportionality of each layer could be better assessed. The layers on the top seemed too dense (hence heavy), causing the cake to tilt to one side. If the cake was in another shape, perhaps round with a more focused centre of gravity, the cake would certainly be able to stand better than its current sliced form.

In general, we felt that the cakes were good, in the sense that fresh and fine ingredients were used. The fact that most of the cakes (well, the 3 we tried) were not overwhelmingly sweet, it did not upset us from trying to get another dig at the cake. I certainly enjoyed the 'lightness' of the cakes, though I would preferred it better if cakes such as Antoinette and Little Red Riding Hood had more fillings being pocketed between the mousse.

This is the Basil milk chocolate with Bitter Orange cake. The top part has some gelatin orange jelly adds a bit of tang which matches well with the smooth chocolate taste of the cake. And infused into the cake is this subtle basil flavour! It doesn't taste too strong so it adds that element of surprise and was quite refreshing. Not your average chocolate cake for sure!

It's in a corner and easily overlooked by those who are not observant but stepped inside and you are greeted by this quaint shop which not only serves cakes but also sells cute trinkets. I had their Passionfruit cake which is AWESOME! It's really refreshing, light an not too sweet. The taste of the fruit really comes through for this cake. Thumbs up!

We ordered 4 different cakes. Honestly I Cant remember the names of the cakes because it was too creative. Haha.

But I will start with my favourite. Being a die hard chocolate lover, I had ordered Little Red Riding Hood (Dark Chocolate with Raspberry Mousse. It was the best of the 4, I had that day.

It is smooth and soft and the mousse was delicate. What I loved most was the raspberry inside the dark chocolate. It's sour flavour gave me a surprise and balanced the rich dark chocolate on the outside very well.

My sister's favourite was Antoinette, White Chocolate with Mango Mousse. its texture was soft and good enough. According to my sister, it's a well balanced cake. But for me.. it was a bit too milky I felt.

The other I enjoyed very much was Cafe Dumo. It has good mix of delicious coffee and chocolate flavor.

We were recommended Japanese Iced Tea to go with the cakes. However, it was just very ordinary to me.

Not too sweet too and after having one you feel like having another one. The price is slightly higher, but when it tasted good and original, I think the price is overall a worthy one.

Kinabaru - coconut mousse with passionfruit centre

This was the flavour that we got 2 slices of. Everyone really enjoyed this one, it's fruity and very light. Well, actually, most of Kki's cakes are light! The crumbly base was excellent.

Emily - champagne mousse with wild strawberry centre

This one was my favourite of the lot. I love alcohol-infused stuff and strawberry-anything so this just sealed the deal for me. This cake's more on the cold side so eat it fast.

Fromage Melon (left) - cheese mousse with rock melon centre and Onigiri (right) - basil infused milk chocolate mousse with blood orange centre

The Fromage Melon was so-so, couldn't really taste the cheese. Definitely tasted more rock melon. As for the Onigiri, this took the award for "Most Creative Flavour" for us - who uses basil in cake? Only Kki! Super refreshing choice!

Cafe Dumo - chocolate coffee mousse with praline centre

This is probably one of Kki's slightly heavier cakes. It may seem like an average coffee choco cake but once you stick your fork in you'd understand that it's not. The exterior is so delicate and a tad bitter and it adds this nice contrast to the thick, sweet praline centre. It takes a lot of skill to make something so heavy well-balanced like this.

The milk tea - pretty light, more tea-ish than milky, a little too diluted for my liking but still satisfying.

I can see myself returning to Kki over and over again. They also make their cakes in different sizes so you know what to do the next time you're in need of a damn good birthday cake for special someone ;)
