Flat White
(S$5)
An Australian origin, similar to a caffe latte and is distinguished by thinner froth on top.
The drink was served in a cup with no holder. The drink was rich and thick.

Breakfast Crab Cake
($15)
Potatoes, Pancetto, Avocados, Poached Egg, Wild Rockets
The crab cake tasted a tab fishy, but quite meaty. Interesting the potatoes was presented like a mashed potato patty.

Pear Tart
($8)
Baked pear tart with vanilla gelato
The serving was bigger than expected, about the size of a small pan. The tart smelt quite delicious when served. The crust was light and crispy, and sliced through easily. As it was served hot, the gelato melt rather easily.

Overall the food was not bad and the place was quite relaxing.

I had a Chai Tea Latte (SGD$6.00) which took longer than the other beverages - I watched people coming in after me all getting their drinks but not me. Then comprehension dawned upon me when my drink arrived - it took a lot more effort to make this tea - not just one cup of Chai Latte on its own, like most places, mind you! It came with the filter and there were real Chai tea leaves after I sieved / dripped the drink - wonderfully smooth latte piquant with Chai's fragrant.

Then I also had a Pear Tart (SGD$8.00) to go along with it. If one expects a slice of good old fruit tart, they are going to be mighty disappointed - because this is different, and fares much better. The crispy, puffy tart was big, round and light - it gives way easily to the knife's touch and crumbles into gorgeous golden flakes. In the mouth, this puff pastry was utterly delightful, further enhanced by the light taste of cinnamon dust over it. The fresh pear slices and vanilla ice-cream completed this dessert item, making for a way-above-average mid-afternoon tea-time companion.

I have been meaning to try out this cafe at Novena, hidden amongst the medical offices at Novena Medical Center. This is definitely the last place you'll expect a cafe to be opened here, a good one no less. La Ristrettos is a hole-in-a-wall cafe, with an indoor seating capacity of approx 15-20 pax. My sis and I ordered a Tostino E Arrosto ($10) and a Croissant Al Cotto ($9) to share. The former is a toasted sour dough with garlic olive oil, spinach, roast chicken breast, tomato, ricotta cheese and poached egg, while the latter is toasted croissant with leg ham and swiss cheese. We also added scrambled eggs for an extra cost of $2.

Both dishes were executed really well. The chicken breast wasn't dry and tough, instead it was marinated really well and tasted good on its own. The poached egg was also done perfectly; the egg yolk oozes out the moment the knife slits across it.

It was an absolutely right choice to add the scrambled eggs to the croissant we ordered. Though I would prefer the eggs to be slightly more milky and runny, it was the perfect combination with the ham and cheese.

I also liked the Iced Mocha ($6.50) which I ordered as it was pretty strong and definitely helps in keeping me alert for the day. The Mango Fragole ($6.50) on the other hand was too rich for my liking.

Croissant Al Cotto ($9) - Toasted Croissant with Leg Ham and Cheese, served with salad. Top up $2 for scrambled eggs

The food here totally surpassed my expectation and I will definitely be back again to try their other items, especially the lunch menu (was drooling when I saw the pastas being served to the other customers)!

Mocha ($5.80)

Their version of mocha has made me a fan of mochas. The drink is thick and smooth, chocolatey yet not overshadowing the coffee flavour. A very good choice if you want to get a drink.

Linguini Alle Scaloppina ($14.90)

This was an alright dish in general. The tomato sauce was appetising and scallops passed in freshness.

Tostino E Arrosto ($11) - Roasted Chicken Breast, Poached egg, spinach atop an olive-oil drizzled sourdough toast.

From the all-day breakfast menu, the Tostino E Arrosto was my pick. The roasted chicken breast was a tad dry, and the sourdough toast seemed a little too hard. However, the mustard sauce, made with whole mustard seeds, that accompanied it at the side was superb. It lifted up the dish. The sourdough was thankfully softer after mopping up the poached egg yolk.

With its 'hidden away' factor, indie cafe setting and nice ambience, it makes a good place to while away the afternoon with a book. It's good for coming with another friend too, but bigger groups may find it difficult to get seats. Even though the food may be average, the coffees pulled here are very good, if the mocha is anything to go by. There are 2 power points available at the bar seats area, for those who may wish to use their laptop. Definitely worth a visit for the place itself, if not the beverages.

Very tasty.

Service was good, and I loved the rustic ambience and plants, which reminded me a bit of PS Cafe.

Will be back to try other menu items!

now i know where to get my cioccolata fix ;) hehe. la ristrettos is a really nice hidden find, tucked away amidst the maze of medical suites in novena medical centre. if not for the small lunch crowd, i would think that place is normally really really quiet and peaceful (: just look out the window and you'll see nothing but greenery, and more people just chillin'. nice ;) the perfect place for some me-time which i'd really needed during that period.

i think this is an italian-inspired cafe, not just because of the chocolate, but because lots of things on the menu are in their italian names
'ristretto' actually means 'restrained' or something like that, which means that you get an even more POWERFUL espresso shot, as it has less water in it. i'm not a coffee person, so i didn't try their espresso though.

i would say that their cioccolata calda ($6.50) was pretty well done! ^^ definitely has the thickness and creaminess similar to the italian version ;) the only thing was that it was rather erm..lumpy? haha not that it diminished my experience of drinking it. it was actually quite nice to melt the chocolate lumps in my mouth
just wondering whether it was because they didn't stir it properly or what.

i really like their options for all-day breakfast here! definitely one of the most original i've seen so far. getting a teeny bit bored of the normal full breakfasts and eggs benny (even though i still love it!!) that i'm seeing in every single brunch menu around. the menu here though, has none of those, and therefore appeals to me much more at this time ;) it's the kind of menu you'd probably find in italy (though this would probably be more like a lunch menu in italy, rather than breakfast), consisting mostly of sandwiches. BUT way better than italy ;) why? because there is real meat in it!!!!! score
i loved my tostino e arrosto ($10) which was a toasted sourdough spread with garlic olive oil (which made the bread superrr tasty!), spinach, roast chicken breast, cherry tomatoes and ricotta cheese. the flavours of the spinach and cherry tomatoes were lovely, and they enhanced the mild taste of the chicken breast significantly when eaten together. the texture of the chicken was not too shabby, at least it wasn't overly dry, despite being roasted. wish there was more ricotta because it was merely a tiny dollop and i couldn't really taste it :/ sadly, a blooper came in the form of the salad! it was...sad to say, disgusting. ironically one of my friends said it was one of the best she'd ever eaten. maybe they didn't wash it for me
it tasted really strongly of pesticide. which is awful. but i didn't touch it after a few mouths and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of my sandwich (:

overall, a very nice place to chill, with a very calm, zen-like feel. and i would come back for my italian hot chocolate ;)

Had a Grande Breakfast with poached eggs ($14) and a Tostino E Arrosto ($11) accompanied with coffee. Well coffee was really good and priced reasonably. I could see that the owner has passion over coffee and apparently the place is the sole distributor of Cafe Agust Beans, a FairTrade 100% Arabica Beans.

Food was up to standard too. But I would have preferred if the sourdough bread were not that tiny in size, it barely sized up to the size of a usual slice. The Tostino E Arrosto was better in fact and great for those who like chicken breast meat like me haha

I would definitely return to this place especially if I want a quiet place for reading or something. Great coffee and oh yeah service was good too. The owner of the place (I suppose) was really observant and thoughtful to the needs of his customers. What a great hidden find!

Other than the All-day breakfast and coffee, they also serve pastas, salad, soup and cakes. My mom and I had an enjoyable and hearty breakfast
I love the interior of this cafe and I would come back again for their excellent coffee, food and ambience!
