We ordered the signature vanilla mille-crepe cake and the very creative checkers cake (resembles a checkerboard of vanilla and chocolate sponge cake). The vanilla mille-crepe does not disappoint. In every bite, you taste the fresh vanilla cream sandwiched in those layers of crepe. Likewise, the checkers cake's dark chocolate ganache enveloping the vanilla/chocolate sponge cakes is all rich and intense.

Both cakes are so rich in cream that they fill you up very quickly. Go for a pot of tea and take sips between each bite to enjoy a really good Lady M afternoon tea.

The hottest new dessert place of September / October 2013 in Singapore is famed New York cake boutique, Lady M Confections. Well known for their delicate yet decadent cakes and pastries handmade daily using only the freshest high quality ingredients, Lady M Confections has been drawing long queues. You know Lady M Confections is good when you see people from all walks of life just waiting to get it, from yuppies to suits, kids to the elderly.

Ambience at Lady M Confections revolves around an open concept area that is non-descript in shades of white and grey. Furniture is little more than functional pieces, able to be moved around to suit the crowds, and the only decor to speak of is the elaborate Lady M Confections signage, and a fake plastic plant that adorns each table. But the open counter where their famous cakes and pastries are displayed is attractive in itself.

Service at Lady M Confections is pretty good. While staff are relatively young, they move fast, and are somewhat observant. You'll have to actually wave to attract their attentions sometimes during peak periods (which is nearly all the time), but they're polite, and knowledgable about the menu. Takeaways are quite easy and convenient as well, though there isn't a separate queue or counter for takeaway, which I found odd, as it may get messy if many people place takeaway orders.

Food at Lady M Confections is all about desserts, namely their cakes. Expect generous sized slices of cakes / confections, with sweet, decadent, full-bodied taste and flavour, and reasonable prices comparable to most other mid-range cafes. The menu in Lady M Confections for Singapore is limited as compared to their headquarters in New York, United States Of America, having at least 1/3 less variety. Still, what is available here is extremely good, and repeat visits to try the various items on the menu at Lady M Confections is recommended. Or you could just order takeaway. A slice costs about SGD $9, while a whole 6-inch cake (6 slices) costs about SGD $42.

My only unhappiness / complaint with Lady M Confections, is when they're trying to produce their cakes to meet peak period demand... The presentation of the cakes wind up looking extremely sloppy and unprofessional. Hopefully, this would improve with practice. Fortunately, the cakes still retain excellent taste despite looking 'rushed'.

The signature Vanilla Mille Crepes features 20 paper thin handmade crepes, layered with light, airy, almost ethereal pastry cream, and a caramalised golden coat. Extremely delicate and decadent, the Vanilla Mille Crepes simply melt away in your mouth, with a subtle, non-overpowering sweet note at the end. If you only eat 1 thing here, go for the Vanilla Mille Crepes!

Visited twice, service was not too bad. Cafe looks a little dark/dim/not well lit when night falls, but it's clean though. Not much choices if you are heading there after dinner. We heard about Matcha Mille Crepe is actually one of their seasonal flavour, so currently they don't have any matcha Mille crepes. Cakes/tarts are not very fantastic (maybe it explains why there is no queue every time I passed by), the only cakes we love is signature Mille crepe, matcha Mille crepe, gateau aux marrons.

1) It is from New York. Anything from the US of A seems to create some buzz. Case in point: Garrett's popcorn that made us relook at the sinful snack and take it seriously - price included. Carl's Junior too made us sit up and look at burgers priced more than $10.
2) Crepe cake mania - fact is, the crepe cakes never quite took off like cupcakes.
3) Lady M, sounds like some regal high and mighty highness of cakes. Maybe the moniker, maybe the whole fuss about trying to effeminate a cake shop - it worked for me. A name like Master Bruce for pancakes would not work, since mainly females partake of the heavenly and whine till the cows come home about the calories.

First day I popped by, they had a decent selection and people were frantically taking away most of those out on display and I was not in the mood for dessert #horrorofhorrors.

Second visit, I had to wait for a table and all they had was crepe cake on display - 3 whole ones and the rest were slowly peeking out. Man, this sounds like an eternal wait for a Birkin. The moment the baker appeared with cakes, the queues started and a mini rush was created.

Crepe Cake ($7.50)

Do not attempt to leave the premises without trying a crepe cake - it is signature, afterall. Layers of crepe and cream made this a delectable dessert. Nothing fancy about crepe and cream but they nailed it brilliantly. A word of caution that one too many may cause an overdose of cream.

Checker's Cake ($8)

This only appeared there after and I had to have it since it was a love at first glance back in its reno days. Beautifully put together like kueh lapis, the vanilla and chocolate sponge were rather complementary with adequate amount of whipped cream to hold the cake together.

Iced Americano ($5)

The caffeine addict deemed this good for a cake shop and I suppose this is a signal for one too many visits to come.

Service is casual, pretty hit and miss. Queues for takeaway and ordering can get confusing - if all things fail, just raise your hand for a waiter. There is repetition of the same whipped cream in their cakes but one thing's for sure, I am enamoured.

Signature Mille Crepes SGD7.50

What is so captivating about crepe cakes is the layers of crepe alternating with the cream, creating an especially pretty cross section after having it sliced out and served on a plate. The top layer is gently caramelized till golden, giving the cake a nice finishing touch. We took our first bite of the cake, and the layers of the crepe was so soft it melts easily in our mouths. There was a tinge of sweetness amidst the frothy whipped cream sandwiched between the layers. As we made our way to the thicker portion of the slice, the cake got too creamy - practically much more cream than crepe. Hence, the cake turned a little too soggy and moist for my liking.

Green Tea Mille Crepes SGD8
Lady M in New York - Prices start from USD7.50

Oh and did I mention that we were lucky enough to coincide with the delivery of a new batch of cakes? (It was around 1715 for a Sunday) Yay! It was quite a sight seeing the customers flocking up to the counters as they display their new batch of cakes. We decided to go for their Green Tea Mille Crepes because I have an undying love for crepe cakes.. The green tea version may appeal to some of you guys more, as the earthy tea taste has cut down the sweetness a little. However, the same problem was found in this cake - too creamy and moist!

On a side note, we had their Cafe Mocha (SGD5) and Macchiato (SGD3) for those who are interested, but nothing spectacular there. I'll definitely skip the coffee and go straight for the cakes on my next visit!

Earlier on this year, I had tried Lady M when I was in New York for a holiday. I visited their store on the 59th Street(Plaza Food Hall Boutique), as it was conveniently situated next to Central Park. This store was located as part of a dining hall at the basement - likened to the Takashimaya Food Hall we have in Singapore. I managed to try a number of their cakes, namely their Signature Mille Crepes, Strawberry Mille Crepes, Chocolate Mille Crepes, Green Tea Mille Crepes and Checkers. The New York version was drier due to the thicker consistency of the cream, and also the ratio of cream to crepe works just right for me.

I guess my heart still lies with the Lady M in New York, but I don't fault them as it is definitely much more difficult to replicate the cakes in Singapore due to limitations in ingredients or bakers. Having said that, I am still happy to see Lady M in Singapore. It also implies that the food scene in Singapore is developing and I can't wait to see more overseas brands here soon!

I suspect that Lady M in Singapore will only get more popular, so go early to get your mille crepe cakes fix or you'll have to wait for their new batch of delivery to the store.

Lady M Confections is located at
Marina Square Shopping Mall
6 Raffles Boulevard
#02-103

Keep a lookout for their upcoming store at One Fullerton in Oct ;)

The paper-thin crepe is really good. Much much better than some that I had tried some where the crepe is so thick that I can feel that I am biting on the flour.

Lady M Confections is one of the highly anticipated openings in Singapore considering its success over in the US. Priding itself on creating fresh and fine cakes, Lady M's cakes are handmade following recipes that had been refined over the years.

As soon as we learnt about its official opening at Marina Square, there was no way we could resist these sweet temptations! Their signature crepe cake reminds us fondly of the version tried at Nadeje in Malacca. How does this American version fare? About time to leave the judging to our taste buds!Quite frankly, if I had not heard of Lady M before, I would struggle to find out what this place is about. The decorations were simple and clean filled with white-based tables and chairs. On the outside, however, it did not really come across to me as a patisserie and you would however need to walk through to the inside of the cafe before you can even find out what food Lady M has to offer. We were shown to a table promptly and while we were shown a menu of drinks and beverages consisting of coffee, soft drinks, juices and champagne, I could not help but wonder how would cakes go with champagne? Admittedly, the pairing just seemed rather out of place for me since there were no other savoury food on the menu.Ordering of the cakes would have to be done in person as one would expect to queue behind the glass partition separating the server and the cakes. I was rather disappointed when I saw what was available behind the glass partition as seemingly the cakes did not looked appetizing nor enticing enough. Personally, I prefer my cakes to come individually portioned rather than sliced out which gives it that extra touch of exclusivity and also for the premium factored in the bill. Do note that prices are not indicated on the cake labels so you only know how much they cost when the bill comes. Hmmm...I believe Singaporeans, or at least I speak for myself that we can be rather price conscious creatures so having the prices available would be a good addition.

Signature Lady M Mille Crepe Slice (S$7.50/+)

Since this was not the first time we had crepe cake, there was a benchmark when it came to expectations. The top had a crystallized layer of caramel which added a beautiful texture of crunchiness to the soft and moist crepe slice. With 20 layers of crepe sandwiched between layers of cream, it was certainly not for those who watch their calories intake! When compared to other patisserie places such as our recently blogged Flor Patisserie , I found the cream a touch too strong, dense and thick for our liking. It also had a rather strong milky taste to it which subjectively did not suit my palate.

The crepes were really fine and thin so essentially you could not taste much of the crepe but more of the cream. For a person who is not quite a fan of cream, I found it hard to finish the slice even as it was shared among three of us.

It would surely appeal to those who have a liking for whipped cream and what drew me to it was that crunchy crystallized caramel that gave the cake a beautiful layer of texture. Arguably, it was slightly too sweet but its desserts after all!

Tarte aux Fruits Slice (S$10/+)I could not help but cringe when I realized that this slice of a financier fruit tart cost S$10++. The presentation failed horribly and while financier sounded like an interesting try, it disappointed massively in terms of flavours and tastes. Supposedly baked with almond butter cream, the element of almond tasted superficial or at best of almond essence. The financier base which formed the tart was coarse and you could literally taste the gritty bits and grains.

I was unsure about what the orange sliced fruit in the picture shown above was, probably papaya or persimmon? Though it gave a crunchy texture, I was divided whether it was a deliberate attempt to add a layer of texture or simply the case of unripe fruits being used.

We went for this for along the way to the cashier, we saw quite a few tables of diners tucking in to this tart and seemingly had a smile on their faces. Oh well, like they say, taste is subjective. This quality and this price, surely a big no-no for us.

Banana Mille Feuille (S$7/+)Like I said, Mille Feuille or Napoleon usually has three components to nail, the puff pastry, cream and layer of sponge. I felt that the cream was in excess in this rendition of Mille Feuille and it somewhat overwhelmed the layer of sponge cake which I was quite unable to distinctly taste. The puff pastry was okay but not impressive and I found the elements rather disconnected. The puff pastry, cream, sponge and banana were seemingly elements on their own and failed to find harmony in unison. The banana pieces seemed to be introduced into the cake for the purpose of doing so and did not quite complement any flavours nor did it wow standalone.

It was overall an 'okay' version of Mille Feuille and nothing too impressive to rave about.

In general, we felt that the while the service crew attempted to be friendly and be at their best, it felt disorganized right from the start with the ordering process. The servers came to us on two separate occasions to verify our orders and out of frustration, I cancelled my cheesecake order.

While all tables around us had water served, we had to request for ours and while I usually have a cup of coffee to go along with my cakes, the servers seemed to be way overwhelmed to even ask to take our orders. I was pretty annoyed when I saw a server constantly on his/her phone (I am not going to be specific for I do not want to cause someone to lose his/her job). It is not a case of being prissy but when you know that expectations are high, especially with a name and reputation to match, you should get the basics right.

The bill took a while to come even though by the time we left, Lady M was less than half-filled. It was surely not a trip where we made our calories count.
