I like the high ceiling and chandelier but couldn't quite wrap my head around the two levels of seating (the 3 private rooms are on the mezzanine floor whilst the normal seating is on the ground floor. Maybe it's just me but I didn't get a very good vibe upon stepping in; The place just seemed a tad too stuffy for my liking.

Complimentary Bread - A decent enough basket of bread to quell any growling pangs before the meal proper. This proved to be very useful later on.

White Asparagus In "Blanc Mange", Oscietra Caviar - The white asparagus came in the form of a blancmange (flavoured dessert made from glutinous or starchy ingredients and milk), which came across as creamy and smooth with a distinctive asparagus taste amidst a mousse like texture. Topped with caviar for that salty slant and aesthetically surrounded by a ring of sour cream to cut through the fishiness of the caviar. Nice but too much of sour cream and blancmange together can be a tad nauseating. A very decent start nonetheless!

Warm Lobster Encased Within Baby Spinach Accompanied By Classic Fish Bone Sauce - I couldn't quite make out the significance of the baby spinach leaf as the taste didn't quite feature but the warm lobster encased within was very good; crunchy with flavours accentuated by the creamy yet not too rich fish bone sauce. And finished off with salty fish roe. I liked this dish but found it tiny and a tad overly fishy.

Angel Hair Pasta With Lobster, Crispy Sakura Ebi And A Touch Of Parmesan - First impressions, "god it's tiny!". Al dente angel hair pasta topped with small, crunchy lobster pieces, crisp sakura ebi that provided a nice crunch and chilli flakes for that mild fire; All simmered in a broth that had a beautiful crustacean flavour to it. Only gripes I had were that it was a tad too salty (and believe me, I have quite a high salt tolerance level) and that it tasted rather pedestrian, like a more refined version of 虾面 (prawn noodles).

Hot Souffle Of Reine-Claude With A Refreshing Yoghurt Sorbert - The Reine-Claude (greengage) souffle was a tad soggy but relatively light. Served with a mildly sour yet sweet yoghurt sorbert. Pretty nice way to end off the meal.

Petit Fours - Lemon madeleines and vanilla canelés. Not great, especially the canelés, which came across as bitter and hard on the outside. The lemon madeleines fared slightly better, sporting crisp edges and a mild lemony taste.

Remember the basket of bread at the beginning of the meal and how I mentioned it was useful later on? Well, with the portion sizes, I definitely needed the bread to fill me up. And even so, I was left rather unsatisfied. Decently competent food but lacking the spark in my humble opinion. At almost $165 for a 2 pax lunch and with all its credentials, I was certainly expecting more; More creativity, more outstanding flavours. But sadly, both seemed to be a little lacking. Service was professional but reserved. So is Les Amis past its prime? Maybe...

I went back to Les Amis for lunch on 22.7.2014. The 4-course set lunch was excellent the last time i came on 1.4.2014. :-) & today again it did not disappoint.

Wife ordered 1/2 bottle white pinot noir. It was good. The bread basket was good. baguette, brioche & sour dough were all good. The roll wife said not good. I did not try.

#1 the crispy langoustine was excellent packed with meat tasted just like very tender lobster, & it was such a large helping.
#2 the foie gras was kind of monstrous. & it was very good too. so was the smoked eel (super!) & cherries.
#3 the 2 main course options were wild scottish salmon confit & tartare OR beef tartare. beef tartare is 1 of my favourites for appetiser. this one though was a main & it was quite tasty. this preparation had quite a bit of herb. it was very good but i would prefer to have less herb & a more dominant sweet tasting beef.
the salmon confit & tartare was very good as well. a poached or baked salmon tends to be more chunky. this confit was medium rare & had a bit of the texture of cured salmon or sashimi. very nice.
beef tartare came with a good french fries.
#4 the dessert of the day was very good too.
I really like the quality set lunch here, and it offered good value at S$45++pax, similarly to their sister outlet au jardin which had regrettably ceased operations.

a good friend bought lunch at les amis on 1.4.2014. no april fool haha.

i must have not stepped into les amis for 5, maybe 10 years? though i did have excellent meals at au jardin (it’s now closed) couple times a year. always thought it was very ex…some months back they introduced this 4-course set lunch. having taken the food, i think it is excellent value-for-money at S$45pax, one of the nest lunches i had.

we started with a bread basket of baguette, sour dough & a very good walnut bread PLUS a truly superb bread (brioche texture) with olive, sundried tomatoes? etc. just fabulous!

#1 & the tomato confit was incredible!
it was on a bed of grilled aubergine on filo pastry. there are tomato confit & there are tomato confit, but this was just excellent!
#2 green pea soup not my favourite, but this was again very good indeed! very smooth & nicely creamy. i may get to like green pea soup a bit more.

#3 there was a choice of patagonia toothfish (chilean seabass, my favourite fish, over cod) OR roast pigeon. both of us took the chilean sea bas. it was as good as chilean seabass usually were.
the sweet red cabbage was ok but not quite my type – i finished about 40% of it.
while this fish never fails to meet expectations as you need a bad chef to screw this up, the tomato confit way surpassed expectations – most places would get it bad or mediocre.
#4 the dessert of the day a walnut apple pie? was likewise not my favourite, but again it was superbly done.
fillings not sickeningly sweet & very good pastry. the chilled chocolate mousse was very good too.
the S$60 lunch menu came with line caught seabass & choice of lobster pasta & australian wagyu etc. i had some doubts on the line-caught thingy being any different from usual & seabass like low down c/w the chilean seabass but the cooking standards here really good i will probably try it.
i was also curious about the 6-course S$120 menu. it said grilled dry aged beef so i asked the waiter (he was very knowledgeable) why this was better than the australian wagyu in the S$60 menu. he said it was OHMI WAGYU! i told him omg! ohmi (a top 3 japanese wagyu) & you don’t write that in your menu? my, my!
i had an excellent degustation at jaan on 20.1.2014 with some friends recently, and we were lucky to trade our pigeon (which was good too) for miyazaki dry-aged wagyu, but this was ohmi, not miyazaki!
i told the waiter this the second time i came across dry-aged japanese wagyu (first was jaan). dry ageing intensifies the flavours & results in substantial weight lost. japanese wagyu is so ex & already very marbled & very intense in flavours i don’t see them served dry aged in japan.

If you are looking to wow your dining companion, do come to the flagship Les Amis restaurant at Shaw Centre. We loved every single thing that we ate. We had the sauteed foie gras and it was exquisite. The taste of the foie gras was divine and the entire presentation of the food was delightfully and thoughtfully executed. However, be prepared to spend a bomb but get ready for a very good experience.

This pan fried cod fish is very fresh and juicy. To add in the great health value to this dish, the chef has used the olive oil to pan fried it. The spinach also is quite crunchy and goes really well with the cod fish meat. The chef also used some sort of lemon sauce to cook this dish which make it really appetitzing and also enhance the sweetness and flavour of the cod fish as well.

3) Char-grilled Wagyu rib eye with hen of the wood , lettuce and sauce Perigourdine - i had it medium well. Wagyu is very juicy and fresh. However it may be cooked more towards well done so the meat is slightly tough. Still is very good.

5) "A fancy lemon tart" thyme ice-cream- This is really refreshing after having a full meal! And the chef is very creative in the whole presentation. I've always love french desserts! still the best!!!

6) Crispy apple-pear strudel topped with vanilla foam, yoghurt ice-cream and salty caramel- this is their most popular and signature dessert according to the staff there and i totally agree! It was so crispy and the sweetness of the strudel is just nice for me. It's a must try i think.

Les Amis is really a very refine restaurant. Their service is tip-top and all staffs are knowledgeable. They will explain to you on all dishes when served, even the butter used for bread! Thumbs up. When i order my tea, they even provide 2 types of sugar in heart shape! feel so pampered

In short, Les Amis - an epitome of style, fine dining with fantastic food and service offered!

I labelled them for easier identification and reference.
I will start with the lemon Madeleine is a crispy and citrus infused tea-cake. It was crispy on the outiside and soft in the interior. Madeleine is not too rich and buttery. I enjoy this!
Irish cream chocolate: Not too bad with hint of Irish cream in it.
Green Tea: Pale in comparison… greenish stuff looks so yucky
Dark chocolate: The best, good quality chocolate used!
Canele: Canele is from Canele since they are under the same company. However I didn’t like caneles so left it untouched.

Overall verdict: All dishes were well-executed. The chef takes great effort in presenting the best and fresh products to the consumers. I would like to highlight the Obsiblue Prawn which is my favourite dish of the lunch.
The staff here are professional, well-informed and service is top-notch. They understand the menu very well unlike in some places where they have to check with the kitchen. They also remembered to ask me about my dietary habits such as food allergy. I am planning for another visit soon.

This is a very ‘me’ starter cuz I like everything on the plate. And it’s most interesting cuz of the hearts of palm which I’ve never tried before. They have a very delicate flavour like artichokes and resemble thick white asparagus, sans tips.

Starter #2: Char-grilled Obsiblue prawn, al dente mushroom risotto and confit egg yolk.

This is even better than starter #1. Come on, who wouldn’t get weak at the sight of bright cheery confit egg yolk in all its wobbly glory?

Main: Main course #2: Japanese trout cooked “sous vide”, chanterelle mushrooms, spring onions

This was strong in flavours, leaning more towards the salty side of the scale. The trout was perfectly cooked but I can definitely do without the foam on top since it doesn’t really add any flavour to the dish.

Dessert: Strawberry-yuzu tiramisu, chocolate tuile, strawberry granitee.

What wins our votes is the superbly smooth and soft mascarpone cheese that’s second to none. The creamy yet light mouthfeel doesn’t taste like any other mascarpone cheese I’ve ever tried before and I even double-checked with the waitress to assure myself that I didn’t assume wrongly, haha. Minus some points for the so-subtle-it’s-almost-not-there citrus flavour though.
