I ordered the Mushroom Melt($10)- Brioche Bread, Swiss White Mushroom, Mozeralla Cheese Cream, Garden Salad, Balsamic Dressing. Took my first bite and could taste the yummy mushroom-y taste with the savoury chewy cheese and light creamy sauce. The bread was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Really delicious. Definitely a must to order if you love mushroom. However it can get a little overwhelming after more bites. The salad dressing was not to my liking. It was citrus-y and sweet. Not so nice. However my friend was okay with it. The only thing I like from the salad was the cherry tomatoes.

We also ordered the Honey Paprika Crispy Wings($8)- Wings, Honey, Spices. True enough the skin was crispy and the meat was tender. You could taste the spiciness from the paprika and the sweetness from the honey. A nice combination.

Some of the tables if you look below, you can see that it looks something like the lower part of a sewing machine. You can even step on it and it will move.

Some of their decor. 'Beauty is in the eyes of the BEERholder'.
This is definitely a good place to bring your friends for brunch but do make a reservation if you do not want to wait.
Other Info. : No GST or Service Charge.

Do visit Lola's Cafe early to grab your seats because it's really packed with people! That's a good sign because many people = good food! Let me share with you some of the dishes I like from Lola's Cafe! From the brunch menu, I got the Farmer's Bratwurst Roll. From the brunch menu, I got the Farmer's Bratwurst Roll. It's a pork sausage in between a sweet bun, drizzled with tomato and nacho cheese sauce, with potato fries on the side. I like the sausage because it has a strong smokey flavour, which is something essential I look out for in a good sausage. The accompanying sauce was delish, although I couldn't really taste the nacho cheese sauce. Fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. A very filling dish, considering the amount of carbs they give!

My friend got himself the Avocado Eggs Benedict, which comprises of 2 brioche bread, avocado, poached eggs, Hollandaise sauce and garden salad in Balsamic dressing on the side. Not too bad with the flavours, although I think it's a little pricey.

If you're a fan of cheese and don't mind having a really jelak meal, then get this Mushroom Melt. Brioche bread with Swiss white mushroom, mozzarella cheese, cream and garden in Balsamic dressing on the side. Gets too heavy after a while, which gives the impression of a huge portion. I like the mushroom-y taste, though.

This incredible starter, which was unfortunately served after our main course, is to die for! Wings were hot when served and the skin was crispy and delish! The seasoning wasn't too overpowering and it works with the wings so well. A must get dish!

Otherwise, you may not really like the taste.Verdict – I will definitely be back in future for the desserts and other mains!

Oh ya...Tables here were refurbished from retro sewing machine table top, so cool!!

We've ordered Lola's Full Monty Breakfast and Avocado Eggs Benedict as main dishes as well as Mocha + Espresso as drink...

The Avocado Egg's Benedit --> The eggs were perfectly poached, and the portion was generous...
Lola's Full Monty Breakfast --> healthy toasted bread & sausage...
Mocha --> taste the chocolate and coffee quite distinctly and even though it's on the bitter side, the velvety finish might capture your heart...
Espresso --> SUPER BITTER!! haha!!

I would definitely visit to try their signature dish Rich Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Tart with Kahlua Coffee Cream!!

Kovan is becoming a hipper place for people living in the North East! I know we have Serangoon Gardens and all but that area is seriously too congested for my liking. Recently, the brothers and i checked out Lola's Cafe, a fairly new joint located at Simon Road, just a stone's throw away from our regular Punggol Nasi Lemak haunt (i don't like it btw).

Lola's Cafe is a cheerful cafe with a limited seating capacity. I reckon it sits about 20 to 30 pax. And they are really popular. Go early, put your booking down on the iPad booking system and be prepared to wait.

I've heard good things about the brunch menu (available from 10am - 3pm on weekends) but i've yet to try it. Friends that i've sent in Lola's way enjoyed the Avocado Eggs Benedict very much. All my favorite ingredients in 1 dish, you bet i'd order that next time.

We met late for supper and picked from the bites section. The Truffle fries with grated Parmesan cheese ($12) was MEH. I'm a fan of soggy fries but this style is simply not compatible with truffle oil. The fries were bland and lacking in the truffle aroma.

My favorite is the Honey and Paprika Crispy Wings ($9). You have to order this! This is an order from the Tummy Ministry. I loved the light crispy batter which stayed crunchy throughout the meal. The meat was nicely marinated and went perfectly with the light touch of honey which coats it.

Their homemade desserts are apparently quite popular here but both desserts that we tried were less than satisfactory. The Dark Chocolate Sea Salt tart with Kahlua coffee cream ($5) sounded more delicious than it tasted. Filling to tart ration was off (too much tart) and the tart lacked in the butter department and was simply too crumbly (and i don't mean it in a good way). The tart tasted like one of those factory manufactured pastry shells. Meh.

Sticky Honey Apple cake with French Vanilla ice cream ($7). According to the brothers, who aren't very picky with food, Swensen's apple crumble tastes better and i concur.

I had the Matcha green tea latte ($6) which was worse than Starbucks. It was terribly bland. Will never order this again.

I was hoping that i would be head over heels in love with Lola's Cafe but i wasn't. Hopefully their brunch will change my opinion about them. Till then.

Caramelized earl grey banana custard tart: I shared this with 2 other friends and we thought it was too small, probably too nice. But I think if we were to consume it on our own it would have been just nice. I like the way the caramel on the top had that crunch and it complemented the earlgrey custard very very well. Yum! The place was super packed though! But we managed to get a seat after around 10 mins of waiting. The decorations are nice, with nice and comfy furnishings.

The cafe deco is tastefully done with unique pieces of furniture and cost seats- definitely a nice place to chill out!

It's usually packed during the weekends, so it'd be better if you visited them during the weekdays if you're looking for a place to chill out ! They serve pretty good desserts however! I had a dark chocolate tart which tasted really awesome! One thing good about Lola's is probably its nett prices on the menu!

I'll definitely return to try their dinner menu out!

Not knowing what to order, we decided to ask for recommendations and ended up getting these that they said was ‘really really good’.

Farmer’s Bratwurst Roll ($8)

Making it to their recommended list, we weren’t quite impressed with this slightly ‘atas’ hotdog bun. In fact the fragrance of the spiced fries greeted us first and got us digging in soon after! Settling down in our stomachs were piping hot crispy fat fries well complemented with the spiced seasoning. It tasted familiar, a simple yet satisfying side to go.

The main star, however, got overshadowed. Cutting open, it seemed like just a plain old sausage, with a tinge of cheese, covered with lots of tomato sauce and nacho cheese sauce to add flavour yet doesn't overpower the taste of the sausage itself. I loved the cheesy taste of it and thought it went well, tasting just like those oozing cheese sausages but better! An ordinary bun, though I'd have preferred it to be toasted slightly to give a crisp bun skin and warm insides before serving.

Lola’s Full Monty Breakfast ($15)

Somehow the big breakfast always seems like a combination of simple things put together but often not in the best form to do justice to the meal, which was the same case for this as well. With overly creamy scrambled eggs, there was just a very slight tinge of the natural egg taste and fragrance. There was also what seemed like hollandaise sauce that came with the egg, making it even creamier and masked the taste of simple scrambled eggs that I was looking for. I'm not a creamy eggs person so this didn't really manage to satisfy my cravings.

Another huge sausage on our plates, we thought this was going to be the same as what we’ve had in the bratwurst roll, but was surprised with a slight savory one that was bouncy enough and tasted good on its own without any sauces.

Top on my list is of course the bacon which has disappointed me in most cafes with its excessive salt and over-cooking to give that hard texture. After a taste of this, I couldn’t stop and this is probably the my favourite out of all I’ve tried so far! Not just the plain bacon you’d usually get, there seems to be some honey coating and it was nicely pan-fried to the right texture, and tasted a tad like bak kwa as aptly put by my companion, though the softer kind which I actually prefer. Besides the bacon, they also mixed the selection with honey baked ham, done in the same way as their bacon. An addictive side that got me popping non-stop!

Truffle Fries ($12)

This was a killer as we realised how much fries we've had for 2 pax, on top of the fat fries which we swept clean earlier. The portion is probably good for 4 pax sharing and we struggled to finish half the basket of fries. A little over-fried, it had a distinct oil taste to it, while the truffle taste took a backseat. First 'fry-ful' and we decided that the fat fries from the Bratwurst Roll set was a better one and we regretted not choosing the Honey Paprika Wings.

Rich Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Tart with Kahlua Coffee Cream ($5)

We were deciding between this and the Caramelised Banana Earl Grey Tart with Pistachio Topping since these were the 2 that sounded different and interesting with the combination of flavours. Eventually with their recommendation, we settled with this and was gladly satisfied! With the dark chocolate used, it wasn't overly sweet nor gives the jelat feeling, and had a thin crumbly crust that complemented the chocolate well.

I was personally bought over by the Kahlua Coffee Cream on top. Typically not a cream person, this managed to get me back for a second mouthful, and third and....finishing it. The coffee kahlua flavour was very subtle and matched the chocolate well, being slightly on the sweeter side, and the cream was done so lightly that it didn't feel like you were tasting cream.

Topped with the sea salt, I thought it was quite an odd pairing initially as I had a taste of the sweetness then suddenly greeted by the salt bits but after a few mouthfuls, I realised it was quite a smart combination to have the contrast of flavours so you don't feel jelat so easily and it's an exploration of taste each time with different levels of sweet and savory combined. Nicely executed dessert!

Spoilt for choice with brunch spots, I wouldn't say this is a must-try (so please lower your expectations!) and I was quite surprised to find most people going there for beer rather than brunch itself. They have quite a selection of beer and ciders, and the quieter ambience there is probably perfect for a good chill-out session with some great friends!

A cosy space, we loved the comfy seats and tables made out of those old-school sewing machines with a lever to place your feet on and swivel, great for those with itchy restless legs like ours! Oh and one thing good about them, the prices listed are all nett prices, hence no need to worry about how much it'll end up eventually, easy for splitting bills too!

I passed by Kovan MRT and decided to drop by Lola's cafe and get some desserts. I ordered takeaway several Caramelized Banana Earl Grey Tarts, which costs $4.50 each. The coffee in Lola’s café seemed really popular and we had a cappuccino and latte. The cappuccino was good. The coffee was well-brewed. The latte however came across as slightly too milky but still pretty good. We had a chocolately looking donut which was pretty decent. Hardcore chocolate fans would surely love this. We also had the delicious fried chicken wings which won us over because it was not too oily and the skin was really crispy. Try the brunch menu (available on afternoons only)!
