Chanced upon this bakery near Necessary Provisions and decided to try their Red Velvet Cake (priced at $6). The cake had a rather strong cream cheese flavour (probably the strongest I have tried so far) and the red velvet wasn't overly sweet. It was also rather moist and the cream cheese was rather smooth too. Overall, it is worth the try continue reading

Chanced upon this small cakery shop, and what attract me is the simplistic color and interior design. While the seats are limited, it does still gives you the warm and welcoming feel. Not sure if their food menu is changed daily, as present date is indicated at the top of the menu. But based on what we saw, they served salmon/prawn pasta, chicken meatball pasta, nasi lemak, tuna sandwich, turkey ham and turkey bacon sandwich, and french fries. Again, a simple menu for the likes of the locals!French Fries ($5.00). One of those fries which I prefer over the skinny fries we have in fast food restaurants... Prawn Pasta ($14.00). Linguine served with pan-grilled prawns. Look delicious and with crunchy prawns, but linguine is not able to perfect the dish. Personally, the pasta did not get into the likes of mine, which is acceptable for me, as their focus is more on cakes. Rainbow Beauty ($8.50). Pretty big slice, with beautifully colored layers Fair level of sweetness might provoke your tastebuds for more! For details, please visit http://foodesteem.blogspot.sg/2014/02/lynn-cakes-coffee.html continue reading

I was wandering along Eng Kong Terrace the other day, I stumbled upon this hidden gem!You often don’t expect to find such a quaint cafe selling cakes and such amidst the rundown shophouses. This cafe-cum-bakery has only been open for a month! I really liked its brilliant white decor which certainly makes it stand out from the dull green/blue/black walls of its adjacent neighbors. As I was walking past, the rows of beautifully displayed cakes caught my eye.How can I say no to that? They were calling out my name. I just had to go in.The rainbow cake wasn’t ready when I went down that day, but there was Red Velvet, Choco Heaven, and Carrot Cake in the glass display… as well as a Hazelnut Meringue, Victoria Sponge and Brownies in the top display. They sell savouries too! But I was there for the tea, so I haven’t gotten the chance to try them. I’ll be back to see if they are any good, so do stay tuned for an update.I love how the cafe is has minimalist decor, yet its simplistic design creates a very chic vibe. The atmosphere is chill, and the dining area is clean, and comfortable. The perfect place to chill over a cuppa and read a book, or just people watch. We ordered the Carrot Cake and Choco Heaven (Chocolate Cake obviously) to try. I was so excited, I could barely contain myself, when I saw the size of the slices of cake. They were generous slabs of cake, standing tall on those sleek white plates. A feast for the eyes. While getting to Lynn’s may not be a piece of cake, their cakes sure do make up for it.Choco Heaven ($5.50)This colossal beauty stands tall, almost twice the height of your normal cake. Yet, it is fluffy and moist, and not overly sweet. The chocolate ganache reminds me of the Secret Recipe chocolate cake, while the cake itself is similar to that of Lana’s Cakes. Definitely a winner, especially for chocolate lovers. You may want to share this slice though, since it really is quite big. Each fluffy layer of chocolate cake is sandwiched with a thin layer of chocolate ganache which keeps the cake moist, and creates the perfect proportion of cake and ganache in every mouthful. If you’re having one of those days, by all means, order a slice for yourself and go for it. It’ll take all your troubles away.Carrot Cake ($6.00):Carrot Cake is one of my favorite cakes, I like how Carrot Cakes have a variety of flavors and textures, which makes the cake so much more fun to eat, since every mouthful is a party in itself. The shreds of carrot, the smooth cream cheese, the crunchy walnuts and the sweet cinnamon, all meld together to create the perfect cake. None of the monotony of eating a singly-flavored cake.Well that’s my point of view… to each his own.Did their carrot cake meet my expectations?YES YES YES. This was one of the best carrot cakes I have eaten.. and that is saying something since I have tried quite a few carrot cakes. In fact, I would say it is as good as, if not better, than Cedele’s Carrot Cake.Their carrot cake was so moist, and flavorful, I had to control myself from wolfing down the whole slice, before my foodie friend could try some. I particularly loved how the cream cheese was smoother than Cedele’s, and had a nice tang to it! Just going off on a tangent here… I wonder if a lemon curd drizzle would work well with the cream cheese icing. Mmmm, I should try that out at home.I definitely recommend their Carrot Cake. The quiet estate of Eng Kong Terrace receives yet another cafe into the neighbourhood as Lynn’s Cakes and Coffee moves in after the opening of Necessary Provisions earlier this year. Located just a few doors away, the week old cafe is an easy find considering if you have ever been to Necessary Provisions.Mama’s Fruit Cake ($5.50) is a steamed cake with raisins included, as such the cake has a sticky texture rather than being fluffy. The cake felt rather similar to a Sticky Date Pudding less the caramel, but with an extra chew of the large raisins inside. The Carrot Cake ($6.00) definitely looked the part with the thick layer of Mascarpone Cheese on top. Despite the lack of a thick middle layer of cheese, the amount of cheese was reasonable without being overwhelming. There was also quite a good amount of carrot bits to chew. It would have been better if the cake could hold up better though; the cake was quite crumbly as we sliced our way through it.For more photos and the full review, please visit: http://jiaksimipng.wordpress.com/2013/11/30/lynns-cakes-and-coffee-eng-kong-terrace/ continue reading

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2013/11/30/lynns-cakes-coffee-11-eng-kong-terrace/Hearing about another addition to the Eng Kong Terrace area, I came down to Lynn's Cakes & Coffee to look at its operating hours (I was there only around 9.15pm and thought it may be closed) and ended up going in after realising it was opened still (there was a huge crowd by that time still)! The Red Velvet Cake is one of their best sellers. True enough, it stands out to its selling crowd. It tries out for a medium between chocolate, vanilla and cream cheese, which although it tastes slightly more vanilla than chocolate, it succeeds in doing so. Probably one of the best red velvet cakes I've had for quite a while. As this place is more known for their cakes, their coffees doesn't really stand out. The Flat White ($5) here is less milky and tasted slightly burnt (although the milky nearly covered the burnt taste). I don't mind though as I'm here more for the cakes! If you are around the area looking for something to snack on, this place will certain be a good addition to your list! continue reading
