This has been a must-go every time I'm in Chinatown. They serve awesome Asian desserts like yam paste, carrot cake, sesame paste and I could go on. But for the humid weather in Singapore, their hot-seller (pun intended) is their shaved ice! They have a variety of flavors to choose from, and my favourite is still the safe ones like durian, chendol. http://static2.sg.orstatic.com/UserPhoto/photopending/0/F2/002Z5G79A094F1FF852332c.jpgDecided to try a new flavour last week while I was there. Decided to try a new flavour last week while I was there. Green tea with red bean, which is very much Jap influenced. Sadly, not everyone appreciated it because the green tea ice cream was the tad bitter kind which not everybody likes. I love it though, because of the bitter aftertaste. It was also creamy so it was just the right level of sweetness for me. The red beans went perfectly with the green tea flavour! A must-have for fans of green tea!

Before meeting my girlfriend, I did not even know that this specific type of powdery shaved ice existed - and that would had been a total waste. Nowadays, instead of your typical ice desserts, such as ice kacang and chendol, people are having bowls of towering shaved ice, which are usually flavoured and topped up with syrup, diced fruits and jelly cubes. Well, with all the new desserts stalls starting to appear in the local food scene, you might ask, "where is the best dessert place, or has the best snow ice?" Although the answer might be ambigious to some, Mei Heong Yuen, or better known as 味香园 is one dessert place to head for.

Being featured in several newspaper articles and television programmes, Mei Heong Yuen is also proud to be one of Singapore's Chinatown Heritage Brand, an initiative by Chinatown Business Association to introduce long established heritage brand names to visitors. Despite being in business for years, its standard still remained the same, unlike some restaurants who slacked on their standards after quite some time. And, if you are still wondering why the name sounds familiar, the owner of Mei Heong Yuen also owns the famous Farmer Brand peanut - the logo features a farmer holding a spade and a bunch of groundnuts with the other hand.

Shifting the focus back to the shave ice, Mei Heong Yuen has one the best ones in Singapore. Their Mango Snow Ice (S$5.00) is a good thirst quencher on hot days, with the flavoured ice matched with fresh mango puree and mango cubes. The strawberry version (S$5.00) does not lose out as well, being a good lover of the adorable-looking red fruit, I am bias towards to this shaved ice, paired with fresh strawberry slices and jelly cubes.

Another favourite of mine - Yuan Yang Snow Ice (S$6.00), a perfect combination of black (sesame) and white (almond), which comes complete with roasted almond slices and grass jelly cubes. If you like the hot yuan yang paste, I am pretty sure you would take a liking to the cold version as well.

Expecting no less from the owners of Farmer brand peanuts, Mei Heong Yuen is also highly acclaimed for their smooth Peanut and Walnut paste (S$3.00). Recently, Mei Heong Yuen has once expanded to fit the large crowds, and it is now occupying three shops allocation. On top of that, they do have another outlet at the basement of Ion Orchard as well. It is small and often over-packed, therefore if you're eating in a big group, do head to their Chinatown outlet.

This is the place where they serve the typical finely sliced snow ice in a huge towering plate. Costing an average of $5 per plate, the durian flavored one i had perfectly cools me down from the heat of the afternoon. It's a durian flavored ice plus durian puree combination. Cluttered along the hustle and bustle of Temple Street, Chinatown lies a dessert shop whose name has been synonymous with towering colourful snow ice desserts. I would have never known of Mei Heong Yuen’s existence if ZX didn’t bring me to this old school dessert shop that’s always packed be it rain or shine, day or night. Trust me, we visited the shop almost every other week after our first visit and we always have a hard time finding a table just to enjoy their desserts.

I vividly remembered asking for ZX recommendations and without a second to spare, she pointed at the Almond & Sesame Snow Ice ($6.00) citing it as the best snow ice she had among the rest. Our dessert came only after footing the bill first as the shop’s customary rules. I prefer eating each side of the ice mountain separately simply because you won’t be able to savour both the sweetness of the white almond from the richness of the black sesame at the same time.

Sad to say they just don’t go hand in hand that well but nevertheless, a popular crowd pleaser.

Don’t you love the fine details of this mountainous dessert? I heard that they craft it with a special machine though I have no idea how it works…

Mango Snow Ice ($5.00) has rightfully earn his place in ZX’s heart and I’m kinda jealous that there’s a dessert sweeter than Yours Truly… I guess there’s always one mountain taller than the other (一山还比一山高). I’m also guessing this is another house favourite since I’m always surrounded by the yellow mountains around our table.

The Teochew Orh Nee ($3.00) was a thick purple yam paste with a diced pumpkins and the must have ginko nuts. Although a decent one, I can’t help but to feel disappointed that they left out the lard in the making of this traditional dessert. As unhealthy and disgusting it might be, lard is what gives orh nee the distinct fragrance and luscious shiny glow.

There are other specialties as well if you’re seeking something light for supper. I think they’re worth a try especially when there’s a bunch of friends to share with.

But for me and my girlfriend, this little dessert shop will always hold a special place in our hearts. Afterall, this was where everything about us started. Acquaintance. Friendship and now, a loving relationship…

Mei Heong Yuen is one of the oldest dessert place in Chinatown. My last visit was more than two years ago, and not impressed with their arragont service. Mango shaved ice ($5) is huge in portion, good to share with mates. The mango puree/juice is chilled and processed into ice block before being shaved finely. Herbal jelly ($3) is served with a bottle of sugar syrup. You can pour according to your preference. The herbal taste is not overwhelmed, hence not bitter at all.

Mango is always my favourite fruit. We ordered mango shave ice and truly mango taste. Very sweet and fruitful as well. It is just nice for 2 person sharing.

The menu will be placed on the table and the staff will attend to you within few minutes. They will take your order and it is served within few minutes. The process of waiting is very minimal and we will need to make payment upon serving.

We came here for dessert after a team lunch and I really liked the shaved ice! I havent had something like this since visiting taiwan more than 5 years ago so was pleasantly surprised to find such good shaved ice. we had the mango one to share and it was huge! It was good to share for 2-3 person. My other colleagues took the black sesame paste and said it was rich and creamy. Apparently the chendol is famous so i will definitely return to try it!

Mine is still as gooey even though it was takeaway on a long journey home
My mum manage to find the shop with my directions and she said there was many people on that sunday! back to the Black Sesame Paste with dumpling, their dumpling is very chewy
Not sure if they made themselves or buy elsewhere but it's seriously delicious
Would definitely be back for round 2!

A popular dish of the shop, the dish will appeal to people who loves yam. The abundant sprinkle of sesame makes the yam cake taste more fragrant. The home made chili is highly recommended to go with the yam cake though it may be a tad spicy for people who can't take food that are too spicy, hence a small amount is recommended. The yam cake is not too soft and has a good mixture of both starch and yam and does not taste too starchy. The price is however a little steep.
