Whenever we are nearby Shunfu market, my wife and I will make it a point to visit this stall to purchase their famous soon kuey & abacus seeds (suan pan zi). The soon kuey is filled with lots of fillings; my favourite is the abacus seeds. This particular dish is difficult to make as it is time consuming. I do not buy abacus seeds any where else only from this stall as it is the BEST I ever had. Thumbs up! Must come early though as they sold out fast. continue reading

Abacus beads is the must order at this stall. This is the second stall that i know for selling this traditional hakka snack. The abacus beads are made of yam and flour. It was then stir-fried with a generous bits of dried shrimps, minced meat and mushroom then garnished with spring onions and dried shallots. It is nice to eat these abacus beads with their specially made chilli. I enjoyed eating it. continue reading

This is the hakka soon kueh from the famous hakka stall in this food centre. The skin was translucent with a nice chewy texture and soft too. The filling is turnips, black fungus, mushroom with dried shrimps. Their special chilli is quite spicy but it goes well with the soon kueh. Please note if you want to your chilli to pack separately then you have to pay additional 0.30 cents. continue reading

I remembered the first time I have Suan Pan Zi (算盘子, Abacus Beads) was during one of my Chinese New Year visit prepared by my friend's parent. Since then I have not been able to find the dish in eateries around Singapore. When I read about this Hakka stall at Shunfu Mart that sells traditional Hakka food, I was excited and made my way down to the food centre one morning.A queue was formed at the stall when I reached the food centre. The stall sells a variety of Hakka snacks and food but I only had the Suan Pan Zi (算盘子, Abacus Beads). It made my day though as I finally get to satisfy my craving. The homemade yam double has a nice chewy texture and it came with a starchy chunky mushroom/minced meat gravy which is very flavourful. continue reading
