What do you do when you are craving local food like mee pok in the wee hours of the night? Head on down to Mengs kitchen! Even at 12mn, I had wait at least 10 minutes to get a table.Do not expect air con and a super clean coffee shop, this is your typical coffee shop you find in the heartlands on upper Thomson road. It is quite hot and stuffy and I would recommend you to get a table outside the shop, facing the main road for some fresh air.Pay up front at the cashier, starting at $4 for mee pok and $5 for a mini work. It's still reasonable and the food is served to you rather quickly. They are generous with the seaweed in the soup and you can taste the lard in everything! The soup was quite addictive but it didn't leave me feeling thirsty so hopefully no MSG? The fish balls had soup in them so be careful when chewing on them! The noodles tasted good and we enjoyed it! Would definitely be back if I have another craving for noodles in the middle of the night! continue reading

Simple food place that is coffee-shop like but decent enough to have a meal in. Although waiting times can get long due to the high demand, it is absolutely worth it for the delicious bowl of noodles. Minced Pork Noodles, $3.50This place has undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best, minced pork noodles, or as locals like to affectionately refer to as Bak Chor Mee, in Singapore! Pork balls in the minced pork noodles are handmade, and they are extremely soft and chewy. The mee pok is very springy and cooked to the right degree. Pork is tender and fishballs are springy as well. It is also nicely mixed with a dash of chilli and vinegar. I highly recommend this place if you have not tried it before! It might just be the best bowl of noodles you have ever eaten. There are other types of noodles you can order too like laksa, fishball noodles and abalone noodles, all at really affordable prices. Furthermore, this shop is open 24 hours so go there if you are looking for a delicious supper. One of my favourite go-to food places as it is conveniently located and always leaves me 100% satisfied. continue reading

- Bak Chor Mee, $4This stall here is open 24-hours and its bak chor mee is quite popular. The bak chor mee here is definitely above-average, although I think it's pricey at $4. The soup that came with the noodles looked as if it was used to cook a lot of minced meat with, so I thought it should taste sweeter. However, it was just salty. The noodles itself were cooked till springy and the flavouring was quite tasty too. Worth a try, especially if you are craving for bak chor mee in the middle of the night. continue reading

I've tried the famous Bak Chor Mee at Hill Street, and a couple more at other 'famous' places, and i daresay Meng's Kitchen at Upper Thomson is still my top favourite. The staff are prompt, and their bak chor mee has a good balance of oil and ingredients. The noodle are tangy, and the vinegar is just in the right proportion. Further, the soup that comes with it is most satisfying in the wee hours of the morning when you want to satisfy a food craving.Their drinks such as sour plum and teh ping are not bad too. The best part is that it is really affordable. For around $5 or less, you can get a bowl of piping hot noodles with a drink.Being open 24/7, it is a popular after-clubbing destination, or if you're just bored and want to find a place to hang out.. continue reading

Having a minced pork mushroom meepok is sometimes not satisfying enough.Must be the measly bits of mushrooms. I love the noodles. I love the minced pork and pork balls. But can I have more mushroom pleasE!You need to add on a side or two sometimes.Today we added on a side of their thai style tofu.I imagine this to be one of the cheapest possible profit making side.Just one block of tofu. Deep fried please. Some thai chilli sauce. And there we have it. Simple. But so much oil needed for frying it hardly ever happens at home.Yum.Let's not stinge on the garnishing. Some shredded red carrots. continue reading
