MOF @ My Izakaya

This is my second time visiting the MOF at Serangoon NEX and I've noticed that they have revamped their menu. Most of the items are still on the menu and they've added an even larger variety of food. During weekdays, all set lunches come with a freww iced tea, salad of the day and dessert of the day. I'm guessing this is counter the other lunch special offers from competitors at NEX.The salad tasted okay, but it took a very long time for our table of 10 to get all our salads. The service was slow and it was difficult to get the attention of the wait staff. There was a bit too much mayonaise in the salad and that's all you can taste.Their rice was quite hard and no one really finished up their rice. I'm confused as this is marketed as Japanese food outlet, but the rice served here isn't the Japanese rice and this is my second time here, and the rice is just as hard. The soba set comes with a free coffee/tea voucher that you can use either now or during your next visit and has no minimum spend. The salmon ikura here tastes the same as the salmon ikura from Dolce Tokyo, they are both owned by the same company and I decided to add $3 to get it cheese baked. It was quite gerlat but I enjoyed the ikura. It tasted decently fresh but the salmon was abit too salty for my liking. Not to mention, the cheese itself was salty too.The mango ice cream tasted normal and nothing too special about it.All in all, a decent lunch, but someone who prefers a better ending to a lunch meal. This is my second visit to MOF at nex. I decided to go for the lunch set C, curry rice with popcorn chicken. The chicken was mostly pieces of fried skin.. And the rice was quite hard and dry... Didn't finish it. The soup was slightly bland. The chawamushi was okay, there were pieces of chicken and a small prawn too. Were craving for Japanese dessert that day, then we saw MOF and decided to satisfy our craving there. The space is rather spacious, there were many empty seats when we got there - no need to queue.Matcha Sundae - $4.80. I added kanten jelly as topping for $1. It was soft-serve ice cream drizzled with matcha sauce, served with mochi balls, cherry and crispy waffle. The jelly was plain though, the honey sauce didn't help at all. The ice cream was so soft, mochi balls were chewy, and matcha sauce was a hit. It was delightful.Shiratama Kurian - $7.20. Soft-serve ice cream with mochi balls, azuki (red bean), kanten jelly, sliced strawberries and peaches. Pass by this MOF outlet while shopping at Serangoon Central. Was welcome in by the pleasant looking waitress outside the restaurant, and the restaurant is also quite cosy and comfortable too. Bought their steak with 2 side dishes for my lunch, which indeed delicious. The steak is very thick in texture and the meat inside is very juicy and the outer layer is filled wih slight crispyness. I'm a frequent goer of MOF when I visit Nex! This time I tried this pasta from Lenas and it was a little too creamy for my personal taste. The menu showed that the salmon was sashimi but it turned out to be cooked salmon. I love the hot green tea they serve too! I haven't been patronizing MOF for several months so decided to get something to eat from there.Karaage maki $9.20++Eight pieces of rice rolls with fried chicken cubes and cucumber center, wrapped with seaweed and topped with black and white sesame. Found MOF @ My Izakaya, we decided to dine here. I was actually told by my friends it had many bad and negative comments around. Depends how much you relied on the rumours, adventurous eater like us were going to try.We were served by Menu once settled down, it was extensive and you will sure get what you want inside Menu. Sizzling while it served, the rice was appeared attractive blackly. Presentation did help to score a few extra points for the dish. NEX is very spacious and has many shops. So it does get crowded on weekends. When we were seated , the ambience was very pleasant , not terribly noisy or anything. The staff service was alright, attentive and prompt. So we ordered Ice cream with Mango syrup , Matcha ice-cream with red bean and dumplings. My opinion - I have always preferred to have my desserts here because their savoury dishes are average. We visited MOF at the Nex branch and the service is really bad. Took us about 10 minutes to be able to get our orders when the waitress already saw us raising our hands! The ramen portion also decreased as the bowl became smaller. We also ordered Italian sausage pizza. I was shopping alone at Nex and decided to have dinner at MOF to utilize my new member card. After browsing through the menu, I decided to have the nabe set meal and a soft serve ice cream dessert.Salmon miso nabe & tempura setThe salmon was pre-fried and then cooked in the miso broth with vermicelli and tofu. Salmon meat was soft and was infused with miso fragrance, goes well with plain rice. The assorted tempura uses fresh ingredients and was served pipping hot...nice Soft serve ice cream with assorted fruits, azuki beans & kanten jellyThe ice cream was silky soft and creamy, best eaten with the sweet azuki beans. The fruits consist of canned peaches and fresh strawberry. The canned peaches were very sweet, best eaten with the bland kanten jelly. MOF is a popular japanese food chain along with sushi tei and sakae sushi, but slightly differentiates itself from the variety of food offered. I had the curry beef set the other day, which came with my favourite mushrooms - shitake and golden mushrooms, and the portion was reasonable. As a MOF citizen, we are able to claim a free dessert during the birthday month. I was there on the eve of my birthday and ordered a fruity softserve ice cream to compliment my unagi set meal. Hubby had the dan dan ramen which was good too. We also ordered an ala carte mixed tempura for sharing which tasted alright. I have been patronising MOF pretty often, this is the first time I visited on a Sat. It was crowded and waiting staffs were overwhelmed, very hard to flag down one for any service. THis japanese restaurant is my favourite hang out venue for family gathering. As my family members all love to eat japanese food alot, we always have no problem choosing the food we want in this restaurant.
