Exclusively for Japanese Food lovers, MOF @ Izakaya was a definite ideal place. Obtaining the freshest ingredients from Hokkaido, the premium quality of food was recognized. Personally like the environment here, quiet and classy. Wide selection offered, you would get your adore one for sure.Talking about their food, Curry was one of their specialties. If you are with a group of friends with different cravings, you can head to MOF and Lenas at Bugis and other selected outlets. The MOF and Lenas at Bugis operate concurrently offering Japanese and Western cuisine. This suited my needs perfectly because one day, while out with a friend, she wanted some Western cuisine while I wanted Asian food.We ordered bruschetta, and I had spicy meso ramen while my friend ordered steak. The ramen was relatively so-so but the bruschetta was nice! The bread was toasty and added crunch to the whole bread. The toppings were nice too. I love how the ham reminded me of the ones I tasted in Spain.We also ordered dessert but I only liked the ice-cream part. MOF at Bugis is tucked away at a quiet corner of the mall and it has an adequate restaurant space such that it is unlikely that patrons will be required to queue for a table. MOF is also combined with Lena's, so you can choose between both Western and Japanese fare all in one space.The sundaes at MOF are my favourite, with a lovely selection of matcha desserts and drinks. This is a green tea haven that you mustn't miss out on! I ordered a Matcha Kurian ($8.80), Matcha Sundae ($8.80) and a Latte ($3.80). They also offer an Iced matcha at $3.80, or a matcha latte at slightly over $5. Pricewise, the sundaes really give you a bang for your buck! :)This Matcha Kurian has a sweetness rating of 3/3, it comprises of fruits, greentea/redbean ice cream, soft serve, japanese dumpling balls, kanten jelly and a powder-coated sweet jelly. The presentation for their sundaes is impeccable, with a good contrast of colors, in a parfait glass, and the sundae set on a wooden tray.Indeed, this sundae is really sweet -the jellies and the syrup makes for a sinfully sweet treat! The japanese dumplings are like chewy tangyuan balls, without any filling. These can get pretty filling, paired with the jelly. All their jellies go really well with the ice cream -creamy, not too icy and full flavoured. You will like this if you are a fan of fusion japanese parfaits -the jellies are distinctly Japanese, and the syrup has a flavour which balances the delicate aroma of true Nippon cuisine with a robust sweetness.The Matcha Sundae is slightly less sweet, with a rating of 2/3. This consists of the same green tea + soft serve ice cream combo, except that this one has cornflakes in place of the Japanese dumplings and jellies. This one only has the kanten jelly though (a plain jelly similar to agaragar), which is firm and does not have the chewiness of the powder-coated jelly. It provides a good contrast to the creamy ice cream, and the crunch of the cornflakes is refreshing.I am torn between deciding which I prefer: the Kurian or the Sundae. Both have their merits, one boasts a flawless fusion of Japanese culture in a classic sundae while the other is less sweet (I actually preferred this sweetness level) and has all the elements of a good sundae without compromising on the taste. It all boils down to whether you want the dumplings and the sweetened jellies.The latte is perfect when taken with the one sugar that is provided, and the milk is steamed to a lovely frothiness. I could do with a stronger coffee taste though, but I suppose the Japanese like their flavours more subtle! The milkiness overpowers the coffee, so if you like really thick, fragrant coffee, this may not cut it for you. It's smooth and very milky though -not too thick too!While I will strongly recommend all Matcha desserts, let's not forget that MOF also offers reasonably priced main dishes. You can find a good selection of noodles, sushi and bento boxes here. Do not expect much for service, however. Everytime i enter this particular MOF outlet, I always feel like I've been teleported to another realm. One where many diners are peacefully eating with the occasional loud Japanese greeting at the door. I ordered a Matcha Sundae as I was craving for some ice-cream and I saw that this was a member's dessert. I didn't get any discount as I didn't order a set meal. Anyhow, the Matcha sundae! ($6.80)It comes with a big fat chuck of matcha ice cream which sits on top of some sweet sauce, jelly and cereal at the bottom and on top of this ice cream, there was another vanilla soft-serve. WOW WOW! Two ice-creams in one dessert! It also came with fruits (Watermelon and cherry), a waffle There was also a small separate holder to add more matcha sauce/sweet sauce, i couldn't tell what it was. I was craving for some desserts and we decided to drop by MOF as they have quite a large selection of Japanese desserts, and also serves western desserts by LENAS which is within the same compound. The creme brulee was average, nothing special about it. Just like how we started meeting, Our Sashimi Moriawase ($18.00) came delectable and light. Swordfish, Salmon and Red Snapper. Sashimi can always be appreciated at any Japanese food fare. We enjoyed our fish critters so much that I almost forgot to take a snapshot until I realized there's only one of each kind left... I didn't tried the Katsu Curry Rice ($12.80) but the dish sure came with a big piece of deep fried pork fillet partially soaking up the essence from the Japanese Curry. How's that for a Ommph factor ehh? I really love how the large plate was beautfully filled. Definitely worth the money!One of our project member who was at Funan the previous day queuing up for his Diablo III game went for the Salmon Set ($19.00) as it was named in my receipt. Looks good but once again, I didn't try the dish myself but everything.I could never seemed to get enough of Sashimi that afternoon and all those illustrations of MOF's bento menu simply caught my attention. I decided to go for the cheapest bento box instead. I have desserts on my mind too.My Sashimi Bento ($9.80) was housed nicely in a glossy plastic box. Somehow as I was taking a snapshot of my bento box, I was reminded by a friend of mine whom I met up recently for dinner. My friend couldn't stop laughing at me taking photos after photos of my food. Well, I guess that obsession of mine has taken to a whole new level? Be surprised to see your Salmon slices, succulently fresh and moist and then accompanied by the really petite Tobiko roe. I still prefer Salmon roe compared to the rather petite flying fish ones. They're just too mini of a fish roe to make any impact. Our lunch meeting came to an end, we needed to sum up our whole afternoon into... What else but desserts?This was the reason I went for the cheapest bento set, the Creme Brulee ($6.80). It's just fun breaking the sugary glace with the dessert spoon and then worked my way into the soft custard. I was just contented with a scoop of Matcha gelato and a few pieces of sweet Mochi. My impression of the Ministry has always been fairly above average. It's one of those places where I will recommend for a quick and relatively affordable Japanese meal. As usual, I always start my Japanese meals with something light. Something like the Sashmi Moriawase ($18.00). There's a range of sashmi to choose from though for some reason I can't remember all of them. All I remember was I had sake (salmon), maguro (tuna) and mekajiki (swordfish). Of the three choices, my favorite would be the mekajiki. It's pretty mild and firm. But being at the top of the food chain means higher mercury content. Hence I try my best to refrain from eating that much unless it's worth the risk! All in all, the sashmi were fresh and of good quality and serving them on ice retains the freshness longer.Chawanmushi was slightly expensive at $2.20 per cup. Price is something subjective. It depends on the individual's perception. In my opinion, it was still fairly average but if I want a good chawanmushi, I would opt for Shin Minori's Pumpkin Chawanmushi.Personally, I am a simple person who goes for simple meals but there will be always be a time where I would just go for a bit of glamour. Shabu-shabu was clearly on my mind that night. I yearned for having something to cook! Therefore, I decided on the Surf & Turf ($17.80). It's pretty healthy with two set of salads to wash that meaty beef and fishy sake. It's all about having fun when it comes to eating and how much more does the fun gets when you get to cook what you eat? I sure enjoy the process!Now for desserts which to me will always be the main attraction of any meals.Repeat after me: "I LOVE DESSERTS!"Macha Sundae ($6.80) comes with not just Macha ice cream. It comes with fruits, jelly, cereals, and a white-ish vanilla ice cream tower! Of course since it's Macha Sundae, it is only right to top of with more macha sauce.It's always best to shared such delightful stuffs with your other half. A mouthful here and a scoopful there. Desserts maybe sweet but nowhere sweeter than a loving couple., I don't have another partner to share with. I guess that's where Macha Zen ($5.80) comes in. Azuki beans and matcha can never go wrong. A perfect combination. A sweet unification. But there's something that I don't quite like about MOF. Their menus. It's as though they went through a war zone! Extremely battered! As the man behind Surreal Gourmet, Bob Blumber once said: "Presentation is ninth-tenth of the battle."I don't know about you but as far as I know, Japanese are extremely particular about presentation but apart from those battered menus, I could see the quality and quantity in their food. Since there's a few MOF outlets around Singapore, it shows otherwise right? I guess one-tenth of the battle is the decisive factor.For me though, I might be back but for their desserts only. It's not that I don't find my meals @ MOF well-spent but I always prefer trying out new places. The FoodI ordered the chocolate vanilla sundae which consists of marsh mallow, 2 big slices of rock melon, cherry and wafer biscuit. The sundae is quite big when it arrive at my table and I immediately taste the 1st scoop of the ice cream without hesitation. The texture of the ice cream is soft and creamy and the chocolate sauce is rich and strong which tickle my taste buds. M.O.F is just about the only place where I can get desserts like this. If any other openricers have any recommendations on where I can get desserts like these, do tell. The first time I tasted their red bean mochi, I ordered a second serving. The bowl was so deceiving because I thought it would be a big serving, turns out to be such a shallow bowl. They have 3 types of hot teas, which comes in a pot placed over a candle to keep it warm. So thoughtful, because teas just turn cold within an hour. Although I can't remember the exact name of the tea, the description included something with popcorn/rice flavor, and it is so fragrant I wish they sold the tea leaves separately. There was such a long queue during dinnertime I waited for more than 45mins! Was so hungry by the time there was a table. My order was served rather promptly though, it was a teppanyaki set with salmon, mushrooms, rice and salad. The good thing about it is that you can cook your salmon yourself, whether you like it seared or well done. My bf loves Jap and even though I love it i cant say i want it EVERYTIME i eat out. At bugis, we found our compromise at MOF @ My Izakaya. They serve a huge variety of food so much so that we took about half an hour starring at the menu deciding what we want. I had tried LENAS, which is a concept restaurant by the same group serving western food and they actually had that menu here. On top of it, it has another specialised Japanese menu.My bf tried the tuna sashimi and his feedback was it wasnt too bad for the kind of casual Japanese restaurant. Obviously the texture doesnt melt in your mouth but its good enough. He also ordered the hotplate set which comes with very very miserable pieces of salmon and thin slices of beef. There were some mushrooms on the side as well. It also came with a special apple sauce which was quite tangy and tasty. We don't think the price is worth it at all. I ordered what was as 'chinese' as possible as im abit 'traumatised' by his japanese food cravings. lol. It was a agedashi tofu stirfry style with small pieces of fried fish on it. On the side, I had chose stir fry beansprouts and chicken. I would say taste is ok except that the food wasn't hot so it is either the aircon in bugis is too cold or the food was pre-cooked. My virgin experience at this restaurant today! The lunch crowd at MOF is really quite crowded, but luckily my friend and I managed to get a seat. I love the ambience here, classy and not too quiet. There are quite a few steps and awkward interior designing (ie. a vase in the middle of the corridor) but still a pleasant place to dine in. A huge selection of food to choose from, including baked rice, pasta, pizza, soups, salads, desserts, drinks, and ala carte sushi. Really spacious! Suspending Japanese-patterned banners - uh, okay cool.Salmon Pork Belly Sushi: $3.80++I liked this a lot - but I'm definitely biased towards salmon - the more raw the better. Technically $2.29 each, a little expensive if you really break the prices down. A little expensive in my budget-opinion, but a little indulging once in a while won't kill. :)Smoked Salmon Baked Rice: $14.90++It is absolutely delicious for the first ten mouthfuls... and here goes: it is in actual fact really very oily, fattening and fills you up really quickly. This japanese restaurant is full of surprises for their customers, especially on their presentation of their dishes are really nice. i ordered a ramen set while my friend ordered vegetarian set and together we ordered one dessert .
