They have student meals (comes with main dish and drink) which ranges from their baked rice to their fish and chips and i got the latter. The latter is lightly battered and tastes quite average. But i guess for the price and the ambience offered at the restaurant, it is quite a worthy deal. Speaking of which, the restaurant has this out-at-sea feel with larger-than-life fake fishes mounted on the walls, coupled with the usual decorations like ropes and nets.

So I've ordered the Chicken Baked Rice this time around and found that it's much better than the fish. Although the taste of cheese may get tiring after half the dish, the chicken portion was generous and were nicely seasoned and grilled that actually reminded me of the Singapore's chicken rice taste, in a cheese baked rice form. But as compared to other places like food court, this is considered quite average.

Overall, service was always bad here and it may probably because business was always brisk from all the students' visits. If I were to ever need to visit this place for lunch again, I may try to give their fish and chips another chance. Otherwise, I'll just stick to this.

Food wise, the ingredients used were not very fresh in general.

Grilled Barramundi ($14.50++)
The Barramundi was slightly overcooked, resulting in the texture being rather dry and flaky.

The Trout had a strong fishy-taste and as with the Barramundi, slightly overcooked as well. Not recommended.

The Ribeye Steak was pretty mediocre, something within expectation since their specialty lies in all things under the sea and not on land.

Every month, they choose 8 different fish dishes from their Ala Carte menu for promotions.

They also offer non-fish choices; 3 of the most popular ones are Steak, Crayfish Hor Fun and Oxtail Stew.

Apparently their Oxtail Stew is something to rave about! It's one of their hot favourites, and has even won an award! The well-marinated meat is stewed for about 6 hours until it comes off the bone nicely. The Oxtail Stew is currently on promotion at $15.80, comes with soup, garlic bread, dessert, and coffee/tea. Once it's taken off the promotion, the ala carte choice alone will cost $14.80. As with the rest of their promotional dishes, this is certainly more value for money!

Lobster Bisque, $4.50

You can opt for it to be served in a normal bowl or a pastry bread bowl.
Other soup choices include Mushroom Soup ($3.50) or Clam Chowder ($4.00)

I had mine served in a pastry bread bowl. I got a little full after taking this (*fail* T__T) so I guess if you have a small appetite, this can be very much a meal on its own at only $4.50. I really appreciate the seafood flavour in the soup, but if you're looking for real chunks of lobster meat and other ingredients, then you're better off paying about $15+ elsewhere.

Mediterranean Seafood Platter, $16.80 for 1 pax (or $32.00 for 2 pax)

When this was served, my jaw dropped, and some of us exclaimed "wow!" unanimously. The portion is really huge, even for the 1 pax option, consisting of Scallop, Prawns, Mussels, Calamari, Capelin (Shishamo), White Bait and Fish Finger baked with Cheese, topped with lots of Fries, and served on a bed of Garlic Butter Rice. It not only looks very appealing, but was also fresh from the oven (loves!) that the waitress had to caution me: "Careful, it's very hot!"

I asked everybody around me to share my platter!

I have to give credit for the scallop which was nicely baked with lots of cheese, and the mussel which was deliciously topped with tomato-based sauce. The fish was also soft, tender and juicy, perfect for me. The prawn was a tad dry though, with its meat stuck to the shells, so I had to spend some time peeling it. Other than this, I really enjoyed my meal!

After getting some seafood out of the way, I realized that the garlic butter rice at the bottom was also topped with melted cheese (loves!). I usually like the taste of my garlic butter rice to be very intensive, so I thought their version could be better, but the cheese really made up for it.

Boneless Whole Milk Fish Fillet served with White Pepper Sauce, $16.80

Milk Fishes are caught from the Sea of Philippines, and is a well-liked dish because the entire fish can be served boneless. I tried some of it and thought the meat tasted rather delicious. Be cautioned though, that even after descaling, the skin can still be slightly hard and rough-textured.

Deep Sea Premium Grade Barramundi Fish Fillet served with Lemon Butter Sauce, $16.80

If you like your fish medium-textured, not too firm but not too soft either, go for this Australian deep sea fish fillet. According to the owner, this is the most popular choice.

The Naked Fish Shoppe also provides catering for all types of events. They have different menus for Hi-Tea, BBQ, Seminar, Local Buffet, International Buffet, Western Menu and even Bento Menu.

The Naked Fish Shoppe is strategically located in The Grassroots' Club, about 3 minutes' walk away from both Nanyang Polytechnic and Yio Chu Kang MRT Station. Why not leave all the hustle and bustle of city life behind, and step into this nautical-themed restaurant for a delicious and relaxing meal?

For the main course, I ordered Deep Sea Premium Grade Barramundi Fish Fillet – served with Lemon Butter Sauce (Salmon). I must say the mash potato was pretty yummy, especially when it comes with the black pepper sauce! It tasted so good that I wished I had more of it. The fish was also pretty delicious as it's crispy and soft at the same time. However the vegetable will need to improve on it. Overall it's really nice experience and I enjoyed myself eating there. Do try out their food!

If you are not a fish lover, the Naked Fish Shoppe also provides other seafood dishes such as seafood fried rice, steak, boneless chicken chop and seafood platter.

As this was a food tasting invitation by the OpenRice, a lunch menu consists of appetiser, soup, main course and dessert of our choices were served.

Crispy Calamari

The calamari does not taste greasy but moist even after deep frying. However, I find that the breadcrumbs (was it?) that forms the outer shell makes the dish tastes like frozen fish nuggets you get from the supermarket.

A plate of crispy calamari (4 pcs) costs around $7.50, which in my opinion, is not really value for money.

Lobster Bisque

Interestingly, the lobster bisque was served in a bread bowl which could also be eaten with the soup together. The soup, however, was not flavourful enough. It would be great if there were bits of lobster meat in the soup for additional texture to it.

I found out from the owner of the restaurant that the barramundi was imported and can be found in the deep sea, instead of the regular mud barramundi we see in wet markets.

I find that the Barramundi fillet tastes very fresh and tender. The lemon butter sauce tastes good on its own but is a tad disappointing as it doesn't compliment the fish. However, I like the portion of the fillet served because it is very solid and filling.

If there's anything I would like to change about this dish, it would be the sides. The hashbrown and mixed vegetables doesn't look appetising enough. A simple, well tossed garden salad would add value to this dish.

The honeydew pudding was a surprise. This small bowl of pudding ended the lunch on a sweet note. The pudding tastes very refreshing with the first few bites, but becomes a little sweet (I'm not a person with sweet tooth) towards the end.

The coconut milk added on top of the pudding is a good choice because it is creamy and balances the taste on the whole.

Other Services
The Naked Fish Shoppe also provides catering services for personal or corporate events.

On the whole I give this a 3/5. You may want to try out this place if you want a taste of fresh, solid fish fillets served at an affordable price.

Ordered the signature seafood platter and also crayfish and fish. The seafood platter resembles a lot like manhatten fish market and fish & co. Being a signature dish, it did live up to its name tag. Delighted to see shishamo fish, big head clams and also scallop as part of the offering, something which the former 2 doesn't offer. The rice is also baked with cheese on it so that makes the rice main dish quite appealing to the taste bud. My partner had the crayfish and fish. The crayfish was cheese baked and the fish came with this nice creamy sauce. Our bill works out to be $45 for 2 pax, also had another plate of shishamo fish as appetizer, quite big sized shishamo fish were served and taste good. Anyway can’t hep but want to suggest that the place can do with a little improvement, a fresh coat of paint, better lighting and new tiles, it should draw in lot more customers.

My choice of main course if the Boneless Whole Milk Fish Fillet - served with White Pepper Sauce ($16.80). I'm in love with the sauce and how fresh the fish is but one thing that was frustrating would have to be the scales of the fish. There were so much that in the end, I literally removed the skin and just ate the flesh. Also, the de-boning wasn't very clean, I still bit into a fish bone and injured my gum.

Overall I give it at 3 out of 5. The scaled and bone really turned me off.

The Iced Mocha ($4) which I ordered! I love mocha, and I really liked this. The chocolate is saturated at the bottom and you need to stir it up if you liked a more chocolate taste, but if you only like a light trace of chocolate, you can choose not to stir that much.

Crispy Calamari ($7.50) is one of the more attractive appetizers available (others include Caesar Salad, Garden Salad Bowl, Coleslaw & Raisins, Baked Scallop Thermidor, Crispy Shishamo Fish) which I liked. Worth ordering again, it was really fragrant and crispy just like its name suggests. The sauce that comes along with it tastes exactly like the fillet-o-fish's tartar sauce from McDs.

Note: The real serving is much larger, about 10+ pieces. The above image is for illustration purposes only.

Not ordered by me but I pinched a bit of this Mediterranean Seafood Platter which serves up quite a huge portion with cheese and rice beneath fish, fries, mussels and prawns. I tried one of the prawns which was really difficult to peel from the shell and didn't have much meat too.
I liked the fries though...

Pan-Fried Mahi Mahi Fish Fillet ($14.80) is drizzled lightly with lemon butter sauce. I liked the sauce quite a lot, but a pity there was not a lot! They can put more of this yummy sauce to pair with the fish fillet!
The lemon taste in the sauce could be more consistent too. The peas, carrots and corn at the side help to break the taste a little. Overall I liked it quite a lot and it is a potential dish that you may like too!

Started of with the Calamari Rings which were lightly fried and crispy. Not too much oil hanging around; which was a good thing. They were really large sized, nothing like those you see at Burger King. A great starter that will definitely whet your appetite and get the kids ready for the meal ahead. No soild ring of squid meat was found inside though (Me thinks/tastes).

The soup in a bread bowl is something you want to skip. Couldn't make out what was going on inside the bun. Also tasted the mushroom soup which was just as unpalatable. Not tasty and too much water with some clumpy lumps floating around.

Went for the main course and boy was I delighted! Ordered the Pan-Fried Marlin Fish Fillet (sashimi grade) with white pepper sauce" and had a nice solid chunk of firm, well-cooked fillet. Mr James Wong also shared with us the types of fish meat that ranged from the squishy ones to the firmer ones such as marlin.

Deeply enjoyed the deep-sea fish meat that was lightly salted and the portion was honestly pretty alright for the price. Nonetheless, I was a bit put off by the sauce which DEFINITELY did not complement the meat at all. I would think pan frying the meat for just half a minute more would have brought out even more flavour too.

Don't get me started on the sides though. I mean, if you are eating with clients and business partners and there you are cutting through a hashbrown and eating cup corn...not very classy isn't it. Plus the fact that the veggies aren't soft enough. A baked potato, fresh slices of tomato and cucumber and couple of Romaine and Red Oak lettuce leaves would have been so much easier, cheaper and still tastier.

Finished off the meal with a cute little bowl of Caramel Pudding which was such a sweet treat :3 A sugary dessert made with custard powder, condensed milk and well, caramelised sugar. A definitely hit with children though it might be a tad sweet for those who don't have a sweet tooth. Sorry no picture here because I finished it up too quickly ^^ I have a whole row of sweet teeth.

The one I had!
I never liked how some grilled fish have this fishy smell when you eat.
But apparently, this doesn't have a single tinge of it!
According to the boss, local Barramundi Fishes are caught from lakes or something, so, the fishes eats mud or soil. But the one they have here are caught at open waters, hence, the things the fishes eat are different. It's like what they eat determines what type of taste/smell they have

The sauce is really light, and the fish skin is salty.
Perfect combination (Y)

This is the environment of the cafe. The ceiling were decorated with fish and other marine life. The walls are also decorated with ropes and buoy. It gives diners a kind of underwater feeling. Lights are slightly dim too.

I have recently purchase a Groupon deal that allows me to buy $30 worth of food from The Naked Fish Shoppe for just $15. I have been there several years ago and recall that the food was not bad. The Naked Fish Shoppe is a western style fish casual restaurant serving many types of fish cuisines cooked in different styles. Besides that, they also serve other type of western cuisines such as Oxtail Stew, chicken and steaks combos. This place is also halal certified!

The Naked Fish Shoppe is located right smack in the heartland at level 1 of The Grassroot's Club, 5 minutes away from the Yio Chu Kang MRT station. It is fairly easy to walk over from the station to the club. In addition, its a shelter walkway.

The table although small was nicely decorated with real orchid. What a nice gesture. However, the chair was very uncomfortable especially if one was to lean back.

We wanted to order the Austrailan Flounder and Australian Barramundi Fillet as this was after all a place that specialises in fish. However, both these fishes were not available that day. As such we had to change our orders to Baked Crayfish Thermidor & Fish, Mediterranean Seafood Platter (For One Person) and a bowl of New England Clam Chowder Soup.

The Mediterranean Seafood Platter was served with a bowl of salad. The vegetables and tomatoes were fresh. However, they were too generous with the sauce.

The New England Clam Chowder Soup was served with a piece of Garlic Bread. The Garlic Bread was cold and hard.

The New England Clam Chowder Soup was not any better. It had a sour after-taste and certainly lack any flavour/essence of clam(s). There were no clams in the soup, only small pieces of potatoes and carrots. What a let down.

The Baked Crayfish Thermidor & Fish was served with Tartar sauce. Crayfish Thermidor consisted of a creamy mixture of crayfish meat, carrots, mushrooms, onions egg yolk and cheese stuffed into the crayfish shell which will then be baked. The amount of crayfish meat given was pathetic. This dish was saved by the fish which was fresh and complemented well with the tartar sauce.

The Mediterranean Seafood Platter consisted of a combination of Prawn, Mussel, Calamari, Capelin, White Bait and Fish Finger Baked with Cheese. In addition, French Fries was added on top while Garlic Butter Rice was at the bottom. It was also served with a bowl of salad (as shown earlier).

As I ordered this dish, I could not help but notice the similarity between Manhattan Fish Market's and this. Manhattan Fish Market's version was certainly better (tastier, fresher). For The Naked Fish Shoppe's version, its prawn were not fresh (meat stuck to the shells) and the fries were hard. The Capelin was fishy, Calamari was overcook and the Garlic Butter Rice was not fragrant enough (tasted like plain rice). Need I say more?

Overall, this was a very disappointing meal. I had expected much better food. Even though I had purchased the Groupon voucher, I still had to top up $14.15 on top of the $15 I had paid for the voucher. (total bill amount was $44.15) I would have been better off visiting Manhattan Fish Market.

Wow! The food there is really amazing! I study at Singapore polytechnic and i went there for lunch with some classmates and it was seriously worth the money! Although the portions were slightly small but the side dishes covered for it! We tried their cheese fries, chicken & fish baked rice and fish & chips! The environment there was also very relaxing. Great for relaxing after a long morning!
