Then on one Saturday, I found a middle ground - Nakhon Kitchen at Kovan offers takeout food! YAY!
There's not as many people, and you can simply place your order and come back for your food later, usually around 30mins. I'm not complaining!

My take out for the night from Nakhon Kitchen - Clear Tom Yum Soup (Seafood), Pandan Leaf Chicken, Fried Chicken Wings (boneless), Deep Fried Pork with Garlic and a Thai Pineapply Fried Rice.

Pandan Leaf Chicken - comes in set of 4. Intricately wrapped like the ketupats that come with satay. Taste wise, a slight letdown given the anticipation I get from how it looks. Maybe it's best had piping hot right from the kitchen.

Fried Chicken Wings (boneless) - interesting take on a chicken wing, where the bones are extracted and the wing itself filled out with a mix of meat and mash. It still tastes slightly more on the bland side. Very much recommended to take with the sweet and sour chilli sauce provided.

Thumbs up for this dish of Fried Pork with Garlic. Taste is reminiscent of the Chinese Lam Yu Pork, very much savoury and leaves you feeling fingers lickin' good and wanting more.

The Thai pineapple fried rice is generic and fragrant enough. I would very much like to acknowledge the clear tom yum seafood soup though. Clean, crisp flavours with just the right amount of heat - it was very much worth the $6 price tag.

At $28 for 2 and a 5-course dinner, Nakhon would really be a viable meal option that I would recommend. Most dishes are priced below $10 except for the seafood, making it extremely attractive to go for a variety as well.

We ordered the clear tom yum soup, green mango salad, kang kong and the jungle curry.

The dishes:

Green mango salad - tasted quite fresh but too sour for me. ( although i understand from my friends that it supposed to taste this way)

Clear tom yum soup (chicken) - tasty without being overly spicy.

Kang kong - This was a good tasting dish as well

Jungle curry (beef) - Not Bad , but can be better

Overall for the price that i am paying, it is quite a good meal.

The setting of the place is below a hdb block, size wise much equivalent to a "mama" shop (smaller than Chinese coffeeshop). It does not have air condition but the place is relatively cool with tables available inside the shop and also along the corridor and shop-front, sheltered of course. 1st impression when i reach there was - d*** it, such a long Q! We had to wait for 5 groups ahead of us but fortunately, the turn over of the hungry diners is quite high, more likely due to the good food and hungry birds combination. The pandan chicken is definitely above average and so is the tom yum soup, we had the clear base, spicy version! The phad thai was also well prepared with ample portion for 2 to share, ingredients definitely taste fresher than those u have by the roadside of bkk
. The green curry and ice tea was a let down though, i've had better ones at maxwell market. Do end yr meal with a red ruby dessert and you will not regret it. Overall a good eat and will rturn to try the tom uyum soup with coconut milk and the phad thai kway teow with beef! Kopkunkup!

OKay place to go for a reasonable thai food at hdb area.

Unlike nakhon, despite being spicy, it is still so full of flavour. Flavour of the lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves. This is ohhhh sooo good!

One of the perks of staying at Hougang is that good hawkers and eateries are just a stone throw away at Kovan area. We have always drove past this Thai eatery right round the corner between Hougang Street 21 and Ave 1 which is always packed during dinner hours. We finally got down to park and give it a try at around 9.30pm after our property viewing.

Although the kitchen was already closed, the staff were really nice to extend it and take in our orders. As it was pretty late into the evening, we just ordered simple Phad Thai and Tom Yam Soup to share.

They were pretty fast with the Phad Thai Noodles ($5.00). Following how Phad Thai is usually served in Thailand, condiments such as chili pepper and lime are made readily available on the side. It is usually the simplest dish that requires the highest level of skills to really impress and wow its patrons. The Phad Thai was done really well. I love the noodles texture and it offered 2 strong flavours - spicy & sweet in harmonious balance.

Tom Yam Soup With Chicken - Thick Base ($6.00) did not disappoint. Stern warning to people who do not take spicy food, this is not the sweet sour manageable kind. The Tom Yam Soup served at Nakhon was intense even for me - might be punishment for ordering so late.

But I respect the strong flavour and it would go perfectly well with rice. Sadly no rice was ordered as I am practising low carb intake for dinners. There were lots of spices in the soup but you can't really eat them. It would be better if more portions of 'edible' ingredients such as chicken & mushrooms can be made available.

Based on the 2 dishes I have tried, this is probably the best Thai food in Singapore's North Eastern Region. I seriously regretted not getting the mango sticky rice dessert. Will definitely be back again with more folks to sample their other dishes.

We had their Fried Kangkong ($6) which was really fresh and tasty! Their Fish Cake ($6) wasn’t really worth it though, it tasted like a hybrid between otah and really tough, chewy rubber and I didn’t really like it.

The one dish I would always order when I’m here is their Green Chicken Curry ($8). (You can choose between chicken, beef, prawn versions, I had the chicken one). The curry gravy is thick, fragrant and mildly spicy, which goes very well with your white rice. The dish is also topped with generous portions of vegetables and tender chicken slices. This curry dish is definitely whet-your-appetite good.

The Red Ruby dessert ($3) is really a nice way to cool down after a spicy thai meal. It’s a shaved ice dessert served with coconut milk, sago and red rubies. They were really generous with red rubies- it was a delight chewing on the red rubies and shaved ice. You get to taste the crunchy, fresh chestnuts encased in the chewy red translucent flour skin cover over the rubies.

They don’t charge GST and service charge here and our very satisfying meal for two just cost $25. No wonder the crowds keep coming in! Be prepared to wait though, especially if there is long queue outside the eatery.

This restaurant at Hougang offers a range of thai food. Pop by during one of the afternoon for lunch with my friends. They do offer a wide range of variety, from drinks, to appetiser, to side dishes, to main course, and to dessert. Their food were tasty, ingredients were fresh too. Do go with a few of your friends, order a few types of dishes, and try everything, that way you can share the cost and able to taste many different dishes.

The service here is also excellent despite it being so crowded always. They are very efficient and nice. The moment i finish my water, they would usually notice and would quickly come by to refill it for you, impressive!

We went to Nakhon Kitchen for some desserts. I ordered the thai red ruby ice which costs around $5. The red ruby is very chewy and fresh, topped with shaved ice. The bowl of dessert tasted very refreshing especially on a hot day. The restaurant is always crowded and usually we have to wait a while for a table.

Thai Milk Tea was authentic, full of fragrance without being sickly sweet! thumbs up for this

Vegetable was so-so.

Stir Fried Chicken With Basil Leaves was tender and spicy but I prefer Chinese style with wok hei taste.

Lastly was the red ruby dessert, which was disappointing too. The crushed ice was coarse and we had a hard time "crushing" it.

Nevertheless, it cost about SGD40 for all the above that we ate and with 2 plain rice. I would say that it's economy Thai food but we seemed to choose all the wrong dishes.

A friend of mine then informed me that most diners who have good reviews ordered similar food such as green curry, pandan chicken, thai mango salad, pineapple rice and etc.

Hmm, so the fault lies with us? lol ~

Yeah, we'll return some time later and ensure that we order the 'correct' dishes ;p
