The soup doesn’t have the same peppery bite that it used to have, although the flavour was still well developed. It’s not quite what it once was, but I will return for the classic bak kut teh flavours and no-frills experience.

My family has been coming here for years. It is a classic bak kut teh eating house: busy, informal yet delicious. The service is quick with attentive staff, but the food is really where Ng Ah Sio shines. The broth is flavourful - perfectly peppery with a robust profile - and can be topped off if you need more, and the side dishes include vegetarian options in case any members of your party don't eat pork. Make sure to arrive early to avoid the queue on busy days! Truly Ng Ah SHIOK!!!

we were at civil service club at tessensohn road on 11.7.2015. it was closed to 4pm. 4 of us decided to go ng ah sio at rangoon road nearby to have bakuteh.

i have not come to this ng ah sio for the longest time, maybe 10 years, but i have been to ng ah sio at chui huay lim a few times & my experience there was good.

the prime ribs were expensive, 2 pieces for S$8.50. soup was good, one friend said ng ah sio always too peppery. i thought so too, but found it quite ok this time. but i am more the rib person than soup person. we ordered 2 bowls prime ribs + 1 bowl spare ribs to share among 4pax.

one friend was especially impressed with the ribs which were fork tender falling off the bones. for me i prefer a firmer texture like i used to enjoy at rong cheng 榕城 in sin min

(though i hardly go there now as it is so easy to make my own bakuteh at home). i guess it is personal preference thingy.

everyone loved the pig skin, no fat, all collagen, or so we had ourselves believed.^^ peanuts etc were usual. i don’t normally take extra dishes when i eat bakuteh since i mostly go for the ribs.

you char kueh was soft as i expected. usually “lau hong” pre-cut in a bowl. nothing much to say about the veg. mee sua ok i guess, can replace rice for less carbs. ^^ o

verall it was just average for me. for S$8.50, i can do my own bakuteh (using 1/2kg fresh indonesian pork ribs from sheng shiong or 1kg of frozen ribs from chinatown market) at home as it is the easiest thing to make. there are so many good bakuteh places in singapore. for the more recent ones i been to, i still like rong cheng bakuteh best, & song fa bakuteh & also ng ah sio at chui huay lim. last time i went to lao ah tee bakuteh at boon keng i did not like it so much.

I have eaten numerous times at Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh (or Pork Ribs) Eating House. This has got to be a must try dish in our garden city island - Singapore.
I've tried both the Rangoon main branch and the newer branch at Tanjong Katong area. The quality is consistent and the restaurants are equally packed during the peak eating hours.

The soup has a unique aroma and blend of herbs and pepper mixture. The soup combination is made of up of fresh pork ribs, garlic and a blend of Ng Ah Sio herbs which attracts both locals and tourists alike to their store. I would usually order either the lime juice drink or hot chinese tea to cool the spiciness in the soup due to the strong peppery blast. The soup and ingredients are usually boiled over a long period of time as you would be able to notice the garlic and pepper residue at the bottom of the bowl.

Avoid going during the hot days as drinking down this peppery soup may cause you to sweat in your clothes. The best time to go is during the rainy days.

The Beau had the Signature Pork Ribs Soup while I had the Signature Spare Ribs Soup. The meat was tender and the soup was heavily peppered, giving it a strong taste very welcoming especially on a rainy evening as such.

It was tasty but the flavor was lighter, unlike one of its competitors' in the vicinity. I was also hoping they would have the ribs + innards soup, but over here they do not serve it.
We also had some rice, you tiao (fried dough rolls), xiao bai cai veg and braised egg along with the soup.

Overall, the food and service here was better than average. The portions may look deceptively small, but they were very filling. Like many Bak Kut Teh restaurants, one may ask for refill of soup as well.

Soup had a good peppery blast, however, was clouded with lots of garlic. Fans of garlic will definitely love this robust version of Bak Kut Teh. Personally, I preferred if they had held back a little on the garlic. Meat on the spare ribs was tender.

We got the Spare Ribs Soup ($7.80), which was quite disappointing. I usually measure the tenderness of a spare rib by testing how easy it is to use a pair of chopsticks to pry the meat from the bone. The spare rib was not tender enough to warrant its $3.90 price-tag. I eventually had to use my fingers and incisors to tear the meat apart. The soup was alright though, rich with the flavour of pork bones without the overwhelming taste of pepper

The peppery taste is strong but not overwhelming. Some people might find the soup too peppery for their liking (quite subjective) but I love my soup base peppery. Very shiok!

The Food
I ordered the signature spare ribs soup and braised pig trotters and not to be missed, my favorite salted vegetables.
When I take the first sip of the soup, it is very fragrant and aromatic with a clear peppery taste.
The ribs are long and meat is tender and soft as it detached from the bone easily.
As for the braised pig trotters, the meat texture are firm and tender and braised just to the right timing- not over or under cooked with a very traditional, aroma and savoury taste of the sauce.
The skin is jelly like soft and bouncy and most important the meat taste very fresh and does not have the overbearing "pork" smell.

The Service
Service was prompt, and rather smooth as I went on weekdays hence not so crowded.

The Ambience
I like the quiet ambience and surroundings in this traditional coffeeshop which made me feel relaxed

The Price
Over-priced at $7.50 for the spare ribs soup and $8 for the braised trotters but still acceptable for me as is worth it for the excellent quality.

Overall
I will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this!

Waiter was friendly and efficient - our orders came within 10minutes! The spare ribs soup was served piping hot, with a peppery goodness that is definitive for any BKT. though we ordered the spare ribs (apparently the long rib bone that is the best part), it was slightly tough - so dont let them linger in your bowl when asking for soup refills! XD

Another item we loved was the Kidney and Liver! Although they scrimped on the kidney (3 pcs as compared to 10pcs of the cheaper liver), both were done well with no gross aftertaste.

However the highlight has got to be the PIG'S SKIN! I never did like Pig's Skin much as I thought it was fattening, but it's in fact chock full of collagen and melts in your mouth. Awesome side dish, and a great bargain at $2 per serving!

Other items we ordered were the standard you tiao and veg sides. Tastes decent enough but not spectacular. The kungfu tea was awesome fun, although the first few cups are crazily thick (i was really bad with the teapot n leaves! haha)
