My Duck Risotto arrived next. Being a risotto lover because I love arborio rice (the longish rice used to cook risottos), I absolutely enjoyed this dish. The gravy was creamy and flowed very smoothly with the rice. The duck meat was tender and absolutely tasty. The entire combination was just a treat for my tastebuds.

This was my second restaurant I visited for Restaurant Week last month. I've always walked past this place but never tried the food there before so I thought this was a good time to sample the food. Seems to be an open bar area and a TV which probably makes this a good place during soccer season. One thing I have to note, because this restaurant is located beside loads of greenery, there were quite a few mosquito buzzing around. I got bitten a few times! I would choose a table further away from the door if possible.

First up was some complimentary olive bread. The bread was warm, chewy and delightful to dip into the olive oil and vinegar. We wish we have a bigger stomach space to ask for another basket but we didn't want to spoil our appetite for the meal itself (who makes themselves full on bread before getting to the mains?)

The first course was the Oven-roasted Tomato Soup with Herb Oil. The soup was tangy, light and a fantastic start to the meal! You really taste the robust flavours of the tomato and the earthier flavours of the herb balances out the sour tang of the tomatoes. Save some of the bread to dip in this soup!

My main dish was the Boneless Chicken Thigh, Potato Puree, Mixed Vegetables and Au Jus. Now when I read the words 'Au Jus' it racked up major points as Au Jus are super tasty concentrated gravy made from the natural oil and flavouring from the dish. The chicken was so tender and juicy! And that Au Jus was very nice too! I did like the medley of vegetables as they were cooked to the right texture (not too mushy or crunchy) and I love the potato puree. I need more of that puree!

Highly recommend this dish. It's safe and simple but because it is done right, it's comfort food after a hard day at work.

Lastly was the Lemon Cheesecake with Chocolate Crumble. I'm slightly disappointed with the dessert. The presentation was beautiful and looks like a galaxy system with the fruits as planet. But the cheesecake was a little too dense for my liking hence it felt a little dry as I ate it. The crumble was quite sticky and I didn't enjoy it too much. Nice to look at but I would give this dessert a skip.

Overall, I enjoy the ambiance of the place and the starter and main dish were winners so I would come back to try other items. I reckon this place would be quite romantic at night so if you're in town and you feel like Italian food, why not give Ochre a go?

The restaurant menu had two mains selections of either Boneless chicken thigh or Sea bass fillet for in for the restaurant week. Other than that, soup and dessert were standard.

The first dish was the Zuppa, the oven-roasted tomato soup with herb oil. The soup was smooth and very tomato based. It has a rich tomato flavour and tasted really zesty. I enjoyed the soup and the herb oil sprinkled together with the cream added on top of it makes it even more flavoursome. It was served with warm bread which was made fresh and very delicious. I enjoyed it over the vinaigrette and olive oil.

The next dish was the main, the secondi which I have picked the Sea bass fillet for my main. The Sea bass was fresh and it came with braised mushroom together with leek and saffron scented and seafood stock. Anyway fresh fish tells it all, cannot go wrong with it. The sauce was mouth-watering with a sweet leek taste. It has a strong smell of saffron and if you know saffron, it is a fragrant flower use in most cooking.

- Sea Bass Fillet

Finally, the Dolci and the dessert was a Lemon cheesecake with chocolate crumble. This dish came in an interesting dessert art which makes the cheesecake looks like it is one of the planets in space with the berries surrounding it. The lemon cheesecake was heavy with a taste of zest and the crumble was coarse which goes well with the cake. The desert was totally delightful. Best of all, we could end off by selecting a cup of coffee or tea that came with the set which really just complemented the cake.

The set for restaurant week lunch at Ochre Italian only cost about $26 with everything inclusive. It was a total deal. And anyway this gives us an opportunity to just try out the food there and will definitely return to try out their other items in the menu there. As for service, the waitress was quite attentive and courteous to us and in addition the ambience also gave them a plus. Needless to say, my friends also cannot stop complementing the place and the food. We totally enjoyed it.

we started off the meal with the antipasti misti ($20) which is an assorted plate of 6 appetizers. the mesclun salad was fresh and lightly seasoned and helped to refresh the palate before our meal. i loved the prosciutto and mango salad - the saltiness of the ham matched with the sweet mango evened out the taste nicely. the pan fried scallop was another worthy mention! it was so fresh and well-cooked, soft with just the right amount of bite. the other three appetizers we tried were the caprese, yellow fin tuna 'tataki' and smoked eel & horseradish cream.

the next dish we had was the saffron tagliolini ($28). i loved the thick gravy with the flavour of crystal bay prawn, mussel & crab meat tomato cream all blended into a smooth puree. it was delicious!

the pan seared beef tenderloin 'rossini' ($36) was the ultimately decadent dish. see that fat slab of caramelized foie gras?!
i think this is the first time i've ever tried it properly and it was superbly awesome. it simply melted and the flavour burst in my mouth. the beef was cooked beautifully too, medium-rare, just tender enough.

finally, we ended off the meal with the dolci misti ($20) which was a dessert platter with chocolate terrine, tiramisu, caramel mousse, passion fruit panna cotta, pistachio gelato. the tiramisu was AWESOMEEEE (: i am drooling just thinking about it
teehee. the passion fruit panna cotta and pistachio gelato were really refreshing! (:

We ordered two pastas to share as well as rocket salad. We requested for smaller plates since we wanted to try different food on the menu. The two pastas that we got are really delicious. I especially loved the Fettuccine $48. The noodles texture is something like the mee pok but this is the high class mee pok that we are eating. The flavours from the wine, chili and basil are well absorbed into the pasta and it is very smooth to eat. The lobster meat in the Fettuccine is also fresh. However, it is quite expensive though, but the taste is really good. The other pasta we ordered is the squid ink pasta ~$28. After eating the Fettuccine, this seems to be quite sub par because our taste buds have adjusted to the rich taste of the Fettuccine. Also, the pasta seemed to be slightly dry, maybe it could do with more sauce. Overall, it is an enjoyable italian meal.

a friend close to me now resident at Cupertino California with his family came calling and a few of us arranged to have a quiet 5pax dinner. I had an expiring 50% discount voucher from Kitchen Language which owns Ochre, Salta, Kumo etc so decided to do dinner at Ochre @ Orchard Central.
Ochre has a nice dining setting & ambience. It was one of the restaurants that had earlier offered palate discounts so I frequented it quite a few times then. The food was good for the price after palate discounts and as Ochre does not charge service, I used to provide the equivalent 10% in tip to the waiting staff.
For this evening, we had 7 dishes-
1. antipasti platter
2. beef carpaccio
3.seafood linguine
4. meat-eater pizza
5. sous vide beef cheeks & kurobuta pork
6. osobucco on a bed of risotto
7. funghi risotto
using UOB Kitchen Language 50% discount voucher, we paid S$124nett for 7 dishes for 5pax, so its just S$18nett pax, truly great value for such food quality & ambience.

the beef carpaccio with rockets & parmesan shavings was also good. the seafood linguine though was really average.
the meat-eater pizza was again very average (pizza not my thing but currently I like quatro fromage (4-cheese) pizza after trying a very good one some time back at Alfresco Gusto)- which is not saying so good for an Italian joint to have very average pizza & pasta..well, can’t have everything cheap & good I guess..

the duo sous vide beef cheek & kurobuta pork was quite ok, and actually my friends quite liked this savoury dish.
the osobucco was the usual good for osobucco in most italian joints, but the bed of risotto not good – not creamy & “pang” (fragrant”) as it should be. clearly they were not good at risotto as the next dish – a funghi risotto which like a vongole dish should define good risotto & pasta dishes – was mushy & not fragrant, again below par!
The restaurant was maybe 40% full on a Monday night & we had a good quiet table though likely not for the other diners as we were laughing quite a bit & quite noisy.
after dinner we moved to the lobby level and had a nice cuppa to continue our chat.

Lobster cream soup with poached quail egg
Not that kind of rich thick soup but more viscous. Full of lobster flavour but we both agree that it was too salty. The globs of olive oil on the surface make the soup slightly oilier but smooth in texture. Good dip for the bread.

Buffalo Mozarella Salad with marinated Tomato, aged basalmic and pesto sauce
Taste of mozarella cheese is accented with the green pesto topping. Classic italian appetizer but I think the portion is inconsistent. Why is it that the guy next to us received larger size and more slices of tomato and cheese? Hmm......

Foie gras stuffed roast quail with truffle polenta & baby vegetables
Would prefer slightly more polenta or meat juices to pair with the quail. More vegetables would be good too. Quail is well roasted (tasted like chicken wings) and the bacon wrapped around it was really crisp!

Black ink risotto with roasted calamari
Simple and nothing too fancy.I like that the black ink sauce is slightly sour and the rice grains are not overcooked. Herbs are infused into the dish. Notice the olive oil surrounding the risotto?
some may find this bland if this is compared to a black ink pasta.

"Sweet and Salty" (ala carte menu)
Warm date and caramelized walnut cake was served warm. It was not too sweet, rich or heavy like the american style toffee cake but the texture was slightly chewy and not moist enough. Topped with a brown sugar shortbread. Baked capellini was stated on the menu but did not appear on dish.
Maldon Salted caramel ice cream is unique due to its cloying texture (perhaps lots of cream was used) but its saltiness was not distinct enough.

Banana brulee, chocolate crumbles and Bailey cream
All the desserts we had were small in portion and could not satisfy a dessert lover like me. But the quality can still pass. Banana brulee was not served in typical ramekin. It was as sweet as the Bailey cream.
Chocolate crumble? I tasted normal plain crumbles instead.

Conclusion : The service was warm and friendly but there was no service charge. Not too bad an offer for this special price but might not return for the ala carte dishes.

We didn't order any starter this time but go straight to main course. I had the Cappelini scallop ($34), my all time favourite. As usual, the scallops are fresh and chewy, full of seafoody flavour! I reckon the pasta is cooked with shrimp oil, giving it a lovely aroma and taste.

For dessert, we ordered the Hot chocolate sensation ($18). Simple yet elegant presentation, but watch out for the bubbly content! This baked Valrhona chocolate cream with frangelico & praline crisp is served with homemade almond biscotti milk froth and hazelnut truffle. Heavenly good!! Must try I'd say.

My friend and I ordered the mushroom pizza, it was great, think crust and great filling.

We also had the crème brulee which fared poorly, flavors not as exciting as it sounds and the taste were just mediocre. The set of crème brulee came in an assortment of flavors. Four miniature cups with Earl Grey, Hibiscus, Pistachio, Espresso, Orange Vanilla. Unless you must have desserts at this restaurant, if not leave the space for cold stone creamery located on the first floor of OC.

As most of the things on the menu is quite pricy, we only ordered a soup (caulifolower) and 2 mains. As a Pasta lover, i decided to go for Ravioli while my GF ordered Seafood Linguine in tomato sauce.

Straters was bread with olive oil on it's side which was great as it came hot. the aroma form the bread and the smell from the kitchen made us anticipate our mains even more.

Caulifolower soup caught my eye as the usual soup we have is usually Mushroom but we decided to go for this as it looks close to mushroom and it's good to try new things once in a while.

Personally, i prefered her linguine as it is a great combination with lots of fresh seafood. Ravioli was a little too "Italian" for my liking.

On a whole the experience was a fruitful one
