Introduction
O'nya Sayang (Love of a Peranakan Mother) is a brand new Peranakan restaurant that offers authentic Pernakan food at affordable prices. Our heritage is genuine Peranakan, with our founder and chef, Zan Ho, being a third-generation, who grew up in a traditional Peranakan family, and enjoyed authentic Peranakan food throughout his life. Over the years, Zan has learnt his craft from his mother, as she lovingly taught him to make authentic Peranakan dishes. continue reading

Having read some good reviews from foodies, I decided to try the Ayam Buah Keluak from O'nya Sayang at Tampines Mall. After I paid S$11.10 for this take-away, while waiting for my order, I went across to another shop to get some items.I should have check the content of my take-away Ayam Buah Keluak. Since its packed nicely, I just took off. What I see is not what I get. After transferring the food content from the plastic container to the bowl, I realized that there were many bits of tiny chicken meat given for this order. From the look of it I can easily foretell that its the leftover from the pot. Moreover there were so little gravy to go along with the Buak Keluak. Lucky for the restaurant to dispose of the food but unfortunate for me on the receiving side. Moreover, the Buah Keluak are not wholesome but halves in sizes. Its an insult to your customer when the restaurant provide leftover food from the pot.Hopefully its not the balance from someone else's bowl.I totally lost my appetite.I called to complain about the food to the supervisor. He did apologized.Once bitten twice shy, I will never again step into O'nya Sayang and will always check my take-away orders before leaving the restaurant. continue reading

This restaurant always is crowded with so many customers that I decided to check out the food here on one of evening for my dinner. No comfort can be found in this restaurant has seats are quite squeezy and due to so many people here, is rather noisy too. Waiter has served me their preserved spicy vegetables, which we usually called 'ah zha'. Really appetizing and very fresh and crunchy. I have tried their curry chicken, which I suppose the meat is quite tender and soft, but think the parts have been cut into too small pieces, which does not look presentable. The fish ball vegetables soup is quite flavourful, with the natural sweetness from the cabbage added in it. Not too salty and quite healthy. continue reading

Out for shopping trip with my mum and grandma at Tampines. My grandma used to be a nyonya herself, wanna try the food here at this nyonya restaurant.Having a look at the menu and the price range, it is still considered price reasonably for a restaurant. And we went in to ask for a table of 3.Choosing nyonya dish, I leave the choice to my mum and grandma. We ordered Babi Ponteh (a pork dish with bean paste), chap chye (non-spicy) and assam fish. We ordered drinks first, iced barley, tea and warm water.Their menu. The chap chye wasn't nice, it is very salty. The vegetables seem to have cooked for very long and it is too soft. Babi ponteh looks like a special dish and we ordered it. It also has the chef's recommendation logo beside it in the menu. Hmm the meat was rather oily. The side dish which the restaurant served. Ajak and chilli. The assam fish was very spicy. From the look of it, the sauce was so redd... Hmm, the fish was rather fresh. However, it seems like the sauce and fish was separately cook as the assam sauce did not seep into the fish itself. This makes the dish not really authetic nyonya food. Hmm, well its alright.. continue reading

I've actually visited this place several times and gave many feedbacks as to how to furthur improve this dish for it's spicyness and fullness of flavour.Needs to be a tat more spicy and more assam is needed. The cooks tend to add too much water when heating up this dish as all the food there comes from one central kitchen. Now back to the review of this dish:1) Chicken pieces moist and tender. Gravy soaked and delicious2) Gravy a tat rough and thin. Needs more assam and less water to be added when heating up.3) Buah Keluak nut. Simply heavenly. Asian truffle if I might add. An aquired taste. The meat of the nut fills half of the shell which is acceptable. Upon digging out the meat and putting into the mouth, I can tell the gravy has been absorbed perfectly into the meatOut of 5 stars, I would rate it 3.5.Why?-0.5 star for being too watered down-0.5 star for being not spicy and sour enough-0.5 star because not enough gravy at the end of my meal. I tend to have 3 mouthfuls of white rice left and no gravy. continue reading

This is the new Nonya Cafe that is open after Tampines Mall Basement is renovated. It has a open concept where shoppers can looked into the cafe. It basically sells Nonya dishes in set meal of less than $10.We decided to try the different sets which comes in 1 glass of barley. We ordered the Bakwan Kepeting Goreng which is basically 2 small pieces of fried meat balls & some lettuce. The taste was nothing special and I thought at $3 it was rather expensive for it sizeThe Lok Bak Set is basically steam rice with a portion of braised soy sauce pork and hard boiled egg. The taste was just normal. It is not like the fried Lok Bak which Penang is famous. It came with stored bought Acar and some green vegetables. The Assam Sambal Fish Rice Set is the best of the sets that we ordered as it has a nice tangy taste and come with lady finger and egg plant. The gravy make you want to eat more steam rice. It also comes with a bowl of plain soup.As a fan of Ayam Buah Keluak, this was disappointing as it taste like normal curry and it was not very spicy. You get the same sides as Loh Bak SetOverall the food its ok and price affordable but do not go expecting high quality Nonya Food. continue reading
