Located inside the jubilee shopping center in amk, you can always watch people eating inside whilst walking around amk central. It seemed to be pretty packed everytime I glanced over, soI decided to bring my family to checkout this neighborhood eatery. We quickly realized that there was no 10% charge but there was still the usual 7% gst on top of the prices. The Mee goreng had a lot of sotong.. We ordered the char Kway Teow which had huge pieces of lard. The taste was so so. I think my dad can cook better and the hawker center has better ones too! It was quite oily, but the prawns were crunchy.. that's the only good thing about the dish.. I'd much rather walk to the hawker center and get 4 plates of char kway teow there..

The chendol wasn't too bad. But there was a lot of gula Melaka and it didn't have the Penang chendol jelly.. so it was a fail for this dessert which I had much high hopes for.

Other Info. : Expensive penang food

Curry Chicken with Rice.

My dad ordered this and it was not that spicy. I personally like curry that is not spicy as I cannot take spicy food. For my brother who love spiciness, he thought that this dish was not that fantastic. The chicken in the curry was overcooked, it was quite tough to bite.

The only dish to recommend is their Fried Kuey Teow. I had forgotten to take a picture of the nicest dish.

Penang Assam Laksa ($5.90):
Both my partner and I don't really like the taste. It seems like they have added in peppermint taste to the assam paste or it's just the taste of assam. Besides, the noodles they used were kind of like 'Mee Tai Bak' or we call it 'Lao Shu Fen' in Chinese. 1 out of 5.

Penang Fried Kuay Teow ($7.50):
This fried kuay teow's taste was pretty fantastic. I can finish up two servings of it if my pocket allows. The only bad thing about it is that the price is close to triple of that you can purchase in a kopitiam. 4 out of 5.

Penang Lor Bak ($4.50):
Very very nice! Especially the Ghor Hiong. However, the serving was really small. Worth the try but just order one serving is sufficient for you to taste. not worth to order too many servings. 4 out of 5.

Penang Rojak ($4.50):
I like the tao pok! very crispy and they also added in fruits like pineapple, green apple (I think) and some other crunchy fruit-like stuffs. However, they only put like 4 small pieces of tau pok, and many other fruits. For me, I prefer to have more tau pok and you tiao. So this dish isn't that appealing to me. Taste wise still not too bad. 3 out of 5.

Penang Cendol ($3.50):
Nice taste. Just tastes slightly different from the usual Chendol that you can find in the food court. I guess that's what makes it nice. Not too sweet and the brown sugar syrup was very fragrant. 4 out of 5.

This is most probably the closer to what we can get here from Penang. I would not say this tasted like the real thing there but it tasted close. It mixed the yellow noodle with thin bee hoon then served in tasty prawn stock with medium sized prawns, fishcake and kang kong. It served with a spoonful of chilli sauce to be mixed into the noodle. It has very minimum level of spiciness. All the ingredients tasted fresh though.

My wife order the Penang Laksa ($5.90) and I order the Nasi Lemak ($5.90) and Cendol ($2.90)
After the staff took our order, they will check with us the correct order is taken, very politely. They will even ask us if we want our cendol to be serve togfather or after we finish our main meal. That is GOOD.
The food came fast, waiting time is able 5-6 minute after order.
The Penang Laksa - does not taste sour and spicy. This dish come with a heathly logo on it. So for those who like to eat laksa but scare unhealthly. This you can try.
The Nasi Lemak - guess it from penang. Does not come with fish, just like our local nasi lemak. But come with curry chicken. That is the 1st time I try this manner of serving. Taste nice. The chili is not really hot. Just nice for me.
After we finish our main meal, the staff will come over to ask if we like our cendol to be serve. That really feel nice.

Really like the place. Staffs is polite. Place is clean and cosy.
Will go back there to try their other menu.
We will be back there soon...............

Both bowls cost about $6-7 each.
They serve cold water at 30 cents per cup so bring your own water unless you're ordering a drink.

Went to this Ang Mo Kio's Gurney Drive Restaurant for dinner with my friends- were very excited to visit this place and try it when I pass by the restaurant once before, and I am interested to try out Singapore’s penang cuisine. So here I am today to try it... but guess what... Fried kway tiao is not very nice, although the photo looks not bad. It is like too blend. Service was also so only, took a quite long time to entertain us. Don't think I will be back again.

For the jackfruit juice - Fresh jackfruit blended to give a soothing taste. Helps digestive system in the human body. Thick with bits of jackfruit in it, blended with ice.

Signature Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle, accompanied with luxurious crayfish!
The pork ribs in the prawn noodle is well cooked that it easily removes from the bones.

Assam Curry Fish Head - Fresh fish head simmered in a smoothed Assam curry with succulent lady fingers, tomatoes, red and green chillies, served with 2 plates of white rice as a foil for the tongue-tingling gravy.
Very thick and spicy gravy.

Lemon Mantis Prawn - Made from fresh mantis prawns. Stirred fried in lemon sauce.
Very sweet and tasty. Do not look or taste like prawn. Very small amount.

Grilled Stingray - Succulent stingray grilled in special homemade sauce.
The stingray is grilled just right as it is still juicy and not dry. Very tasty and spicy sauce.

Penang Cendol - Fresh Cendol and red bean served in coconut milk and shaved ice sweetened with special brown sugar syrup. Too bad not fresh coconut milk. But the Cendol taste good and soft.

We have got a $30 worth of voucher to spend and after glance through the menu, we decided to skip the side dishes as well as the desserts and to order Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee ($6.20), Penang Fried Kway Teow ($6.20), Assam Laksa ($5.90) and Penang Curry Mee ($8.90) together with a regular Iced Coffee ($2.80).

The Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee came first. It served with a spoonful of chilli sauce aside. I poured it in then mixed it well with the bee hoon and yellow noodle. It is the authentic Penang style of serving a mixture of bee hoon and yellow noodle in prawn broth. It came together with sliced lean meat, sliced fish cake, a piece of pork rib, 2 pieces of medium sized prawns and a handful of bean sprouts. Though the prawn broth might not be as concentrated as expected but it tasted pretty close to the real thing that i had at Gurney Drive in Penang.

The Penang Fried Kway Teow served soon after. It might not be able to compete with Ah Leng Char Kwoy Teow over at Penang but it tasted rather nice as compared to others that i tried in Singapore. The slices of lup cheong were sliced in thin slices and nicely fried to release its fragrance. It was fried with egg, bean sprouts, chinese chives, cockles and slices of fish cake. It got a hint of slight wok hei and it might be even nicer if it is a little spicier. I do not remember finding cockles in those fried kway teow eaten over at Penang so i guess cockles were added to better suit the taste of the locals. This was one of the better version i have tried in Singapore.

Next, came the Assam Laksa. The noodle resembled those that i had in Penang hence it gotten me all excited. The first mouthful was a disappointment. It did not have the pungent taste of sourness and spiciness as compared to those that i had in Penang. It would be nicer if the portion of shredded fish meat was a little generous too. The dish was garnished with mint leaves that complimented the slices of red onions, cucumber and pineapple rather well. It served with a spoonful of a prawn paste aside, a typical Penang style. The prawn paste is not as thick and concentrated as compared to those in Penang.

Lastly, the Penang Curry Mee came. A reasonable portion of bee hoon and yellow noodle served in curry sauce. The curry sauce is different from what we have in Singapore. The taste of coconut is in a greater proportion then the curry paste. The spiciness was rather mild. Ingredients like pieces of cuttlefish, tau pok, chicken can be found in it. The dish was garnished with mint leaves as well.

Amongst all, the Iced Coffee reminded me the most of Penang. It was the typical white coffee commonly available there.

It was still a satisfying lunch somewhat.
