Penang Kitchen, a cafe and market is located among the neighbourhood in Bukit Timah serving food-loving Singaporeans with a authentic taste of Penang fare.Penang Kitchen is just another place for your penang cuisine fix in a humble environment and with a wide selection of Penang's local cuisine. The dining environment is simple, with about 10 tables. Decorated and filled with Christmas mood, Penang Kitchen also have a rack full of penang goodies where people can grab some Penang goodies like Nutmeg syrup. The staple and arguably most famous Hawker food in Penang, the Penang laksa. Yeah, the sweet and sour savoury bowl of fish broth that is addictive. The Assam broth was infused with ginger flavour but to me it lacked the "Heh Gor" (prawn paste) and the impact of soury taste was not as strong. Nevertheless, it still pack the pungent, burst full of flavours taste with its basic ingredients.A choice of Mee, Bee Hoon or combination. The spiciness in the prawn broth is one of Penang's Prawn mee characteristics and added with slice of pork, ribs, prawns, kanggong, Beansprouts and egg. The soup base was pretty robust and definitely packed a good punch to any average bowl of Singapore Prawn Mee Soup.Kapitan set was served in claypot and comes with a bowl of rice. The portion of plain rice was rather small for a guy. Anyway, the curry pot was filled with chicken and chunks of softened potatoes meat.Unlike the usual curry, their's was a combination of spicy and sour taste.Torn between the appetizers? Choose Penang Sampler. It's value for money and enjoy the best of both world - Combination of Lor Bak and Belacan wings. The homemade Penang Loh Bak consist of tender juicy pork wrapped up in beancurd sheet which tasted close to Ngor Hiong. The stark difference was that its fillings were more chunky instead of minced and it went along well with the compliments of sweet brown sauce. While the Belacan Chicken Wing seemed overdone and had its color darker than the usual. They were marinated with Chef's recipe but in terms of Belacan spiciness, it was not intense as we had expected. Washing down the dinner, I Sea-Coconut Herbal Tea which was very cooling and refreshing. Barley drinks were part of the set meal and were great as well to clear the spice. They were quite sweet and the slices of sea-coconut were quite difficult to reach given that it was buried under the heap of ice in the cup.Last but not least, the Ice Kachang was a reminiscent of good old Penang. It did not have too many fanciful colors of syrup but it was good enough. It's brown sugar syrup tasted like the soft drink "sarsi" and topped with creamy corn kernels. Yum Yum! continue reading

This little place is hidden along a small road off Bt Timah with several other eateries. We decided to order their signature duck Mee Sua along with the Penang prawn Mee. The Mee Sua came with a generous helping of duck that was tender. The Mee Sua was springy. The broth was flavorful and comforting, without being too herbal in taste. However, the prawn Mee was rather average and the soup while tasty was nothing to shout about. We had the sago for dessert, which was good and came with a generous portion of gula Melaka and coconut milk. It was priced at $4 though, which is quite unreasonable given the small portion. continue reading

The Fried rice is nice, served hot. The prawns inside are quite big. It comes with the chili that is made from Penang kitchen. It has a taste of calamansi and sweetness plus the chili taste. The place is airconditioned and not really packed at all. Usually it is packed around lunch time. Mee suah is nice to have when you want not to be too full. It is served with seafood or chicken. continue reading

Read more reviews at http://thehungrybunnie.blogspot.comPenang Kitchen, together with Thai Noodle House and Curry Wok, round off the trio of eateries along Coronation Arcade that have fast become our go-to for cheap and good food. We takeaway our dinners from the restaurants here at least twice a week. While parking may be virtually non-existent, surprisingly, it doesn't quite deter us from the fabulous food here. You can count on eating like a king for under $15 per person.Penang Kitchen is a no-frills, no-fuss eatery. Although most Penangites would dispute the authenticity of the Penang cuisine served here, it is admittedly more-than-decent. The fare here is generally hearty and comforting. Especially in light of the fact that the food here is so affordable. We had:1) Penang Sampler ($13): a duo of Penang Lor Bak and Belachan Chicken Wings. The fried beancurd skin rolls stuffed with sinfully fatty pork belly was flavoursome without being oily. The fried chicken wings, thoroughly marinated with shrimp paste and tumeric and cumin and other aromatics for full-on flavour, was no less addictive.2) Stir Fried Baby Kailan with Garlic ($8.30): simple and tasty with a garlicky accent, topped with fried shallots for a roasted sweetness.3) Penang Assam Laksa ($8.30): a little unexpected. The heavy use of belachan made for a pungent finish, and it was enlivened with tangy pineapples, spicy cut chilli padi and peppery basil.4) Penang Char Kway Teow ($8.30): deceptively spicy. Good wok hei, with plentiful eggs and beansprouts for a refreshing crunch. A must-try here.5) Nasi Goreng Kampong Penang ($8.90): equally spicy, but its robust peppery heat is more of a slow burning one that hits you in the gut. The rice was well fried, with a rounded, full-bodied flavour. The piquant achar was a nice counter-balance. continue reading

It all began when i tasted the Penang Version of Ngo Hiong (Wu Xiang) in my GF cousin's baby shower. The Ngo hiong was very different is was packed with meat. Stripped marinated pork strips instead of the usual mince pork and prawn blend. He told me that he got it catered from the small eating joint near his apartment near the main road. So a few days later, we decided to give it a try. The Penang Laksa was awesome. Its tangy soup will leave you craving for more. It loaded with Fish flakes, pineapples and cucumber stripes . Not to mention a spoonful of shrimp paste on top of it. This was the best penang laksa that i ve tried in singapore and trust me that this place serve the best and the most authentic penang laksa in singapore. Price a bit steep though, $7.90 per bowl. Penang Char Kuay Teow taste okay, but the serving is a little pathetic. So finally here comes the Penang Version of Ngo Hiong, where the locals call it lo bak. It stripes of marinated pork stripes wrapped in bean curd skin. I believe they use pork neck meat which has tender and juicy texture. This dish is highly recommended for meat lovers. Penang Laksa and the succulent Lo Bak are the must try dishes if you were to visit this joint. Don't forget to try out their recommended Lime Juice with Nutmeg, a perfect blend to quench your thirst. continue reading
