Back to Penang Kitchen for lunch cos running out of ideas what to have. I ordered a seafood mee sua soup for lunch cos I have tried most of their main dish. Mee sua is served from a claypot and fresh prawn and fish can be found, there is crabsticks too. Soup is very sweet and really a very homecooked style of mee sua!

We started off the meal with a refreshing classic Penang drink but rarely seen in Singapore - Nutmeg Lime ($3.20). This is the first i had ever tried Nutmeg and I would say it's a rather interesting experience. The Nutmeg lime is kind of like Sour Plum drink without the sourness and with a hint of cinammony taste.

One of the must have starter you must have at Penang Kitchen is the Penang Sampler ($13) which consist of their Homemade Penang Lor Bak and Belacan Chicken Wings.

Their Lor Bak is not your usual Lor Bak but more like our Wu Xiang.. something you must try at Penang Kitchen! Their Belacan Chicken Wings are nice & crispy, though a little salty, but delicious nonetheless.

I am a big fan of Assam Laksa and I must say the Assam Laksa here is really good! Spicy and Sour but not over the top for both. Definitely one of the best I have tried, I cant help sipping at the soup even after I have finished the noodles.

Another one of my favourite dish is their Penang Char Kway Teow which unlike our usual Singaporean Char Kway Teow, have thin Kway Teows and a generous amout of ingredients like chinese sausages, beanspouts and prawns.

One thing I really like about this Char Kway Teow is that they dont have the greasy uncomfortable feeling that you sometimes get when you eat a plate of oily Char Kway Teow. The Penang Char Kway Teow here is light but still bursting of flavours. very nice!

For dessert, we had Hot Almond with Tang Yuan ($4.80) which is outstanding as well. The Almond paste is super smooth and the star for me is the Tang Yuan itself.. Soft, chewy and bursting with black sesame paste. Super Yums!

Restaurant Environment: Cosy and warm homely feel.
Overall Dining Experience: Pleasant experience
Accessibly: Pretty accessible to the restaurant (2 bus stops away from Dakota MRT Circle Line)
Service: Could have been more prompt. Quite hard to capture the attention of service crew and serving time may take a bit of time
Crowd Suitability: Good for family gathering or a group of small friends

Drink:
Nutmeg lime – A good beverage to have before meal as its sourish sweet and refreshing taste will wake up your eating appetite.

Appetizer:
Fruits Rojak – Very unique mix of fruits platter (star fruit, apple, jumbu, green mango, pineapple, turnip, and cucumber) blended with the spicy sweet sauce, really crispy homemade “You Tiao” and topped generous spread of peanut bits! Shiokness!

Penang Special Platter: Lor Bak which I called it special “ngoh hiang” allow you to taste the big chunk pieces of meat while the belachan chicken wings is non spicy, ideal for non spicy eater!

Main:
Assam Laksa: A thick assam fish broth which the additional special sauce and mint leaves added fragrant and neutralizes the assam sourness in it. One of the more unique savory laska tasted!

Penang Char Kway Teow - Every mouthful had triple taste of sweet, spicy and salty on its chewy thick noodles! Nice!

Penang Nasi Goreng Kampung - Heavenly blend of the light salted belanchan mix with the really well stirred rice and fresh ingredients! Full of nostalgic flavour in the each mouthful! The achar side make you crave for more rice! One of my personal favourite!

Penang Prawn Noodle Soup – A pungent prawn soup base that leave a sweet tingling aftertaste. Generous portion of prawns and meat with mixture of yellow noodles and thin bee hoon is definitely a portion that assured value for money!

Herbal Duck Mee Sua – Strong aromatic herbal smell but it tasted really light and savory. The soup base is really good that you would ask for more! And the duck meat is really tender and juicy! Great for one that hopes for something flavorful yet light for your tummy!

Desserts:
Chendol – The Gula Melaka used in the dessert is really a sure killer! It made this bowl of chendol taste really fragrant and yummy when mixed with coconut milk. The boiled red beans had right softness and the green little chendol bits neutralize the sweetness taste. Not a bad dessert at all to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Almond Paste with Black Sesame Dumpling – Not a fan of almond but visually the paste looks really smooth. Believe fans of almond paste would like it very much as some friends gulped the whole bowl and even pack some back home!

Personally I have not been to Penang and
The meal started with a Nutmeg Lime Drink at first the taste was unfamiliar and tasted like preserved fruits but not only was it a thirst quencher, it thoroughly cleanses the palette between dishes.

Next was the Penang Fruit Rojak ($7.80). I am not a fan of rojak due to its strong tasting sauce, but this unlike others, the sauce was light and refreshing.

Following up the Asam Laksa ($8.30) . This was my favorite dishes of all, i have ordered this dish at the coronation outlet a year back and it was too sour for me to handle. However this time round, the tuna and mint leaves neutralised the sourness in the laksa, and the soup was a flavorful mix.

Up next the Penang Sampler ($13). Consisting of belachan wings and lor bak, this dish failed to impress. The wings were nice and crispy however lacking the belachan taste. While Im not familiar with lor bak, it did not create a strong impression.

Special mention to the Penang Prawn Noodle Soup ($8.30). At first sight, the soup was deep brown, hinting the hours took to cook the broth. The soup was light on the palette, very fragrant with a strong yet not overpowering prawn taste.

Another surprise was the Nasi Goreng Kampong Penang ($8.90). One of the better fried rice I have tasted, it was fragrant yet not oily. The achar complements the rice very well. Will definitely return for this.

Last 2 mains were the Penang Char Kway Teow ($8.30) and Herbal Duck Mee Sua ($9). The kway teow was a bit to dry and overcooked for my liking while the mee sua, though the broth which have been cooked for 6 hours was rich, the mee sua failed to absorb the taste of the broth.

The meal ended with handmade Chendol and Almond Tang Yuan. Both were fragrant and a perfect closure to this meal.

The overall dining experience was a good one with hits and misses, after all everyone has different preference. This place is perfect for a nice family dinner but do make a reservation as seats are limited. I would definitely return again for another authentic penang experience, not forgetting the other outlet near coronation plaza which is more centralised.

The first dish of the night was Penang Fruit Rojak. With a combination of different types of fresh fruits and vegetables such as green and red apples, star fruit, pineapple, cucumber, turnip and in- house keropok smashed into bite pieces with a good mix of special prawn paste and generous amount of peanuts and sprinkled chopped ginger flower. Taste was good with a strong thick flavour of the special prawn paste. Priced: S$7.80

Nasi Goreng Kampong Penang was next on the menu. The not too spicy fragrant fried rice served with a big piece of Papadum and small portion of Achar pickles. The flavorful pickles goes well with the fried rice. The ingredients for the fried rice includes a few pieces of medium size fresh prawns, a good mixed to Grago (small shrimps) and beaten eggs topped with a good sprinkle of deep fried shallots. The Penang Sampler dish of Lor Bak and Belachan Chicken Wings served with sweet sauce and chilli. The skin of the Lor Bah was not crispy but the taste was delicious with a good balance of both lean and fatty pork and went well with the sweet brownish sauce. I could not taste the belachan from the chicken wing. Priced: S$13.00

I was impressed with the Penang Prawn Noodle Soup. The accompanied ingredients consisting of fresh prawns, sliced of leaned pork, hard boiled egg, crunchy bean sprouts and water spinach. The not so spicy broth was flavoursome resulted from the pork stock and pulverized prawn heads and shells. Priced: S$8.30

Penang Assam Laksa, the staple of Penang hawker food. The gravy supposed to be hot, spicy, sour, pungent and full of fish broth was mild and lack of richness. I was a little disappointed with this dish. There was no trace of Ikan Kembong (Mackerel). The noodles were springy with a good serving of mint leaves and shredded lettuces topping. Priced: S$8.30

Another popular legendary dish was the Penang Char Kway Teow. There was a good mixture of sliced Chinese sausages, fresh prawns, eggs, ku-chai (Chinese chive) and crunchy bean sprouts. One missing ingredient was cockles. The presence of small lard pieces has added a fragrant taste to this plate of flat noodles. Priced: S$8.30

Hmmh Herbal Duck Mee Sua which is Penang traditional soup with broth herbs simmered for many hours. There was a large piece of the duck drumstick combined with a good tasting soup of various ingredients including wolfberries. This soup reminded me of the Pig Kidney and Liver Mee Sua.

We had Chendol and Almond Tang Yuan for desserts.

The Chendol definitely cool me down. The shaved-ice and thick rich flavour of the Gula Melaka and coconut milk has an extremely smooth and creamy consistency.

While we were having a round of introduction with fellow foodies from OpenRice, we were served with the nutmeg lime drink($3.20). This is a very uniquely refreshing drink. Although one of the ingredients is lime but the drink is a spot on that is neither too sweet or sour. On top of that, the drink is also good for digestion and soothing the throat. Personally I like this thirst quencher and would highly recommend it as it is not very commonly found anywhere else and it tastes really special.

The first dish we had was the Penang Fruit Rojak ($7.80). It's a mixture of 8 types of fresh fruits and vegetables which includes starfruit, pineapple, green and red apple, mango..etc in their special prawn paste and also their homemade youtiao. This is a very appetising dish with an interesting twist from the usual rojak. Although there are youtiao in it, the youtiao are broken into really small pieces that added some crunchiness to the dish. Interesting! =)

Penang Sampler($13) was the other starter that we had. It is a combination of Lor Bak & Belacan Wings. The Lor bak is actually a local ngoh hiang look alike but with a slightly different taste as they are using tender pork wrapped in beancurb skin instead. While the Belacan wings are chicken wings and drumplets marinated in special secret recipe. Personally I would prefer the belacan taste to be a little bit stronger cause otherwise I think it tasted just like normal deep fried chicken wings.

One of the highlights of the night must be the Penang Asam Laksa ($8.30). As a big fan of this dish, I have yet to find anything near to the authentic ones that i have tried before. However I am happy that this dish changed my whole gastronomic journey. Not only is this topped with a lot of fresh condiments such as mint, onion, cucumber, pineapple and chilli, every mouth is a flavorful experience for the taste buds with the balance of spicy and sour sardine soup base. This is definitely another die-die-must-try dish here.

Nasi Goreng Kampong Penang ($8.90) was another dish that was well loved by the fellow foodies. Not only the restaurant is very generous with the ingredients given, the prawns is really fresh and big! On top of that, it is mildly spicy and every grain of rice is so well fried and seasoned. Kudos to the chef!!!

The next dish is the Penang Prawn Noodle Soup (Noodles or bee hoon or combination, $8.30). The soup is really flavourful and the ingredients given are really generous. However, personally I feel that the taste is quite similar to prawns noodles outside, perhaps the different is the taste is more intense.

Beside that, we had the Penang Char Kway Teow ($8.30). The kway teow was stir-fried with chinese sausage, prawn, egg, ku-chai, bean sprouts and PORK LARDS!!! What is Char Kway Teow without pork lard, right? The sinful pork lard is that missing ingredients that most hawkers have ommited nowadays. However without it, the dish can never be made wholesome again. Thus the char kway teow here is awesome. Not only does it has that "wok hei", it's not oily and also ingredients are generously added to the dish. Yummilious!

Herbal Duck Mee Sua (small serving :$9) was another hit among the foodies. It is a traditional clear soup, well-cooked with herbs for 6 hours. However the duck meat was still so tender when we had it. On top of that, the smell of the herb is really strong and the mee sua is well "soaked"( but not in those soggy soggy texture) with the rich savory herbal soup.

Like I always say, there is space for desserts no matter how much you are. The Penang chendol ($3.80) is really not to be missed. Although the colour seems as if there isn't much gula melaka in this dessert, every mouth was a burst of gula melaka in the mouth! The smell of gula melaka is really fragrant and aromatic and with the combination of high quality chendol( the green jelly) , red beans and kidney beans, it's just the perfect dish to end the night.

But the chendol wasn't the last dish, we had hot almond with tang yuan ($4.80) before the night end. Accordingly to the boss, the almond paste is handmade from scratch. Thus it's really smooth and fragrant. On top of that, they have added egg white to complete the taste with the sesame tang yuan. It was really good that I even had 2 bowls of takeaway for my family. =)
Overall it was a great dinning experience at Penang Kitchen with all the mouthwatering great Penang dishes. On top of that, the serving staff here are really helpful and friendly. The dirty dishes were cleared away once we finished our meals without us asking the staff to do so. Good job! Penang kitchen is definitely worthwhile for me to travel all the way from the west to the east of Singapore just to have it again!

The penang Kway teow was average while the Nasi goreng kampong was fragrant and above average. Both has room for improvement jn terms of taste.

The herbal duck mee sua was slightly better. The mee sua texture was different and the soup was thick and strong and yummy.

The best I had for the day was the Assam laksa and the prawn mee. The laksa taste was not like any other Assam laksa out there. It has mint leaves and fish meat and other ingredients to neutralize the sour taste. Good for those who cannot take sour too well. Overall it was deliciously different.

Special mention goes to their prawn mee. It was much better than majority of the prawn mee you get out there. You have to try it to believe it.

Lastly I had chendol and almond paste with tang yuan. The chendol was comparable with the ones in Penang and Melaka. The almond paste texture was smooth. For those who do not fancy almond because of the strong taste this will be suitable for you.

Overall it was a good experience and I would recommend this place to all Penang food lovers.

With the seafood mee sua, it was as flavourful as the Laska was spicy and packed the heat. Delightful. Will definitely return for a second visit sometime soon.

Waitress whom took our order was not local she was not really friendly and she don't know how to recommend the food either. Choices of dishes was limited so we order a few like sambal kailan, Fu Yong Seafood Egg, fried chicken wings, sambal prawn and for appetizer we ordered Mango Salad and Fruit Rojak. The rest will be some main courses like Sin Chow Bee Hoon (on the menu it was added as a new item), Fried Kway Tiao, Fried Rice (1 non spicy and 1 spicy), Prawn Noodles.

Restaurant was half filled for the lunch crowd and the serving of food was quite fast! In no time our table were full of food! One local auntie whom served us food was more friendly she was so kind to give us extra bowl to share the food too!

Overall we feel the Fried Rice, Prawn Noodle were good. The sambal prawns were cooked with more lady fingers than prawns, seafood eggs was over priced. Very thin egg film was served with little ingredients inside. So after the lunch, we ordered dessert too.

Be cautious when you do ordering especially the Tang Yuan. My boss and I ordered that with red bean base and almond base respectively but the tang yuan was not cooked for both flavours! It was almost like eating powdery balls. I think only their cold desserts are good.

Total bill was $120

Overall still okay in my rating of 3.5/5. Definitely will wanna come back for more of their Fruit Rojak and Prawn Noodles!

This is the branch of the popular Penang Kitchen from Coronation Plaza. The cafe is nicely decorated with the wall painted in orange and beige colour. It makes the place look bright and cheery. On the wall are lots of review from different publication.I ordered the Ice Nutmeg and dad ordered the Iced Penang Coffee to go with the food. The Iced Nutmeg drink was very refreshing, and I like it so much that I bought a bottle of the Nutmeg syrup at $6.50 to DIY at home. It is stated in the menu that

I ordered the Ice Nutmeg and dad ordered the Iced Penang Coffee to go with the food. The Iced Nutmeg drink was very refreshing, and I like it so much that I bought a bottle of the Nutmeg syrup at $6.50 to DIY at home. It is stated in the menu that it aids in digestion and sooth the throat. Dad said his Ice Penang Coffee was very good.

We ordered the Penang Sampler which consist of 2 rolls of Lor Bak and 4 pieces of Belachan Wings. The Lor Bak is better than what we had eaten in the Penang's famous stall. I find the Belachan wings have only a light hint of the taste. I would have preferred stronger Belachan taste.

The Assam Laksa was very good.
It uses the right type of thick rice vermicelli unlike some place I got udon instead. The gravy is thick with lots of fish and not too sour. It is topped with "Hae Ko" (prawn paste), mint leaves, thin slice of cucumber and pineapple. I asked for extra Hae Ko and the waitress gave me another saucer of Hae Ko.

I had a taste of Dad's Penang Char Kway Teow
. The portion is quite big and has bean sprouts, prawn and has the "Wok Hei" taste. It also uses the finer flat rice noodle and it is the white version.

Generally all the dishes we tried are of very high standard and the portion is quite filling. It you want to try many dishes, aim to share the noodle or rice items. Prices are on the high sides but the high quality makes up for it. It is one of the best Penang foods that I have eaten in Singapore so far. Must go back to try Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle Soup, which I heard is very good.
