I was looking for a nice place to have a late lunch in the Bugis area when I found Platypus Kitchen on the Internet. It had pretty good reviews and I liked what I saw on its menu so it was decided then to head to its outlet at Bugis Junction. As a matter of fact, I had walked past this place a number of times before but never had the chance or inclination to visit it especially since it seemed quite crowded during meal times.

When I entered the restaurant, I was a bit intimidated to find that I was the only customer around. I guess that's to be expected too since it was already past three when I was there. Nonetheless, the waiter who had come to greet me was very welcoming so it helped to put me at ease. I was seated at a table which allowed me to have a great view of the entire restaurant which was largely in soothing pastel tones and black. With the afternoon sun pouring in, this felt like such a good place to spend a lazy afternoon in as you watch the people walk by outside. In particular, I liked the seating which was very comfortable due to its padded seats. There have been many times when I stopped going to a restaurant because I found the seating very uncomfortable (e.g. chairs being too high or too low while eating at the table) or the tables being too close to one another thus resulting in a very cramped feeling so it was a good thing to be able to find a place which doesn't add on to my stress in this respect.

First up was the lobster and crustacean soup which is roasted lobster broth served with double cream and bits of Boston lobster. Based on my experience so far, most soups would be either served in a small round bowl or those very big round dishes so it was a bit unusual to see an oval dish used in Platypus Kitchen. I liked the idea because it was rather easy to drink from and prevent spillage which tends to happen with smaller bowls. As for the soup itself, the aroma was very tempting as soon as the dish was served. There was also no need to add additional seasoning like salt and pepper because the soup was already flavourful enough on its own. As for the lobster bits, I felt that they were a bit too finely-cut for me to get a more accurate feel of the taste but at the very least, they didn't taste fishy in a bad way. The only thing which I didn't like about this dish was probably the herbs served as garnishing because they tasted a bit bitter.

The main course I selected was the Italian Rosemary Garlic Cast Iron Grilled Chicken which was tagged as a specialty dish on the menu. The reason why this is called a Cast Iron Grilled Chicken is due to the fact that the chicken is grilled in heated cast iron skillets at 250 degrees Celsius. I presume that this cooking method helps to seal in the flavours of the chicken without the meat becoming too overcooked. There are four versions of this dish where the chicken is further cooked in different sauces so I think I'll be back to try the other versions another day. Coming back to this version which I ordered, I felt that the aroma of the garlic and herbs was nicely infused into the chicken so I was quite satisfied with this dish. The salad was fresh with a nice citrus-like dressing which made it more palatable since I really dislike those with a strong vinegar taste. The fries were of the right thickness but I would have preferred them to be lightly salted so as to eat them on its own. The chili sauce provided was a bit watery and unlike the usual local version we are used to so I thought that didn't go so well with the fries.

One good thing to highlight about the service here is, the staff noticed that I was struggling with cutting the meat and went to get a meat cutting knife for me to replace the bread knife I was using. Granted that I was the only customer at that time, it might not have been difficult to notice that but I still applaud them for taking the effort to make the change because they could have just ignored me anyway if I didn't ask for a change in the knives.

Last but not least, my dessert was the molten lava cake served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and chocolate soil. The vanilla ice cream was rather ordinary in my opinion but I thought the idea of having that almond chocolate glico stick as a garnishing was pretty interesting. On the other hand, the lava cake was rather dense and tasted quite rich so I gathered that it should be made of dark chocolate or the proportion of dark chocolate was pretty high. It was a pity that the cake was so dense that the "lava" failed to flow out when I put my spoon into it. However, the semi-liquid chocolate within was still nice to eat despite its gooey texture. I'm not sure how the chocolate soil was made but as long as it tasted good, it didn't matter so much.

On the whole, I was rather satisfied with my dining experience at Platypus Kitchen and would want to visit it again but still, I would prefer to avoid the peak hours. I sure don't mind being the centre of attention again as the only customer in the restaurant! I also liked the fact that the restaurant attempted to distinguish itself as a place where people can meet up to enjoy meals together and it's making an attempt to get people off their phones at the dining table with little notes in the form of bookmarks. There are quirky questions and little known facts about food which can be used as conversation topics and I thought that it's a pretty good idea to catch the diners' attention. Whether it does help in making people concentrate more on their dining partners and food rather than their phones still remains to be seen but this type of initiative should be encouraged for its positivity.

The Platypus Restaurant Group started out with small takeaway kiosks (Platypus Gourmet2Go Food Bars), eventually gaining enough success to open a small eatery (Platypus Lobster Shack). Their business grew till they were able to open their 1st full service, sit down dining restaurant, the Platypus Kitchen.

Ambience at Platypus Kitchen is modern casual. Dark wooden furniture is spaced neatly within the dimly lit, yet spacious, floor space. With colours themes of wood against black, the interior has a sophisticated, romantic vibe to it. Tables can be shifted around to accomodate large groups, and when the restaurant gets partially filled, it becomes rather noisy and lively.

Service at Platypus Kitchen is professional and efficient, as befits a full service restaurant. Staff are quick to seat diners in an orderly fashion, and are knowledgable enough to make recommendations. I like that on a particular visit, the staff proactively suggested changing my order to a set meal, which saved some money. Waiting time for food is around 10 minutes or so, rather quick, and I note that staff are also efficient are clearing away empty / dirty tables. However, while staff do offer polite greetings upon entry, they don't bid you goodbye, which is rather odd.

Food at Platypus Kitchen is a mix of American, French, and Italian influences. Offering the best dishes from their various concepts, including Platypus Gourmet2Go Food Bars, and Platypus Lobster Shack, dishes here are tasty, mostly hand crafted using premium ingredients. Each dish is well balanced and packs flavour, and portions are large. In particular, their seafood dishes and hand made pasta dishes are standouts. Despite the high end cuisine, prices are reasonably affordable, budget about SGD $34 per person for a 2-course meal here.

The lobster roll is a classic American sandwich, and the Traditional Lobster Roll (SGD $24.90) closely resembles those from Connecticut or Maine. Prepared in East Coast style, a grilled, buttered brioche bun is generously stuffed with fresh chunks of butter poached lobster, diced tomatoes, chives, and sea salt, all coated in a savoury, fragrant roasted-garlic mayonnaise. Each bite gives you the hit of the savoury sauce; the fresh, slightly briny, meaty lobster; then the juice of the tomatoes, and finally the light crunch of the bun. Pure comfort food, highly recommended!

The classic French dish of Duck Confit & Berry Coulis With Potato Confit Mash (SGD $20.90) features an imported Hudson duck leg, slow-cooked / confit for 10 hours in its own fat, then quickly seared to give it a crisp skin. The result is incredibly fork-tender, fall of the bone duck meat that is savoury and robust in flavour, while the crisp skin shatters with a satisfiying crunch when cut. The duck fat under the skin is easily removed. A tart berry reduction lends a sweet fruity taste, which cuts through some of the heaviness of the duck.

With starter, soup, main, dessert and tea, the bill came up to about $30 per pax which I thought is very decent. Definitely a revisit when in the area.

The mushroom risotto was the biggest disappointment. It had a strong blue cheese taste which made the dish pungent. My bf, who is a risotto-lover, could not bring himself to continue after a few bites as it was too pungent. When we asked the waiter if blue cheese was used inside, she said it was just cream.
It was a disappointing dinner for us as we expected better food based on the reviews given by other diners.

Fresh pasta, premium ingredients, wallet-friendly prices, spacious seating, convenient location. You really can’t ask for anything more, can you? Fresh handmade pasta prepared every morning is the pride of Platypus Kitchen and the folks here believe in gourmet dining at everyday prices.
Here, one can find the largest selection of pasta in Asia. Those who need help in deciding on that to order will find this algorithm useful.
I visited 3 times, twice for set lunch and once for dinner. Set lunch is very value for money; pasta and risotto sets from $12.90 includes a choice of soup or side salad, a cold beverage and pasta. For pastas with premium ingredients eg crabs, prawns, scallops and truffle, an add-on of $0.90-$1.90 is required. Service was attentive and efficient. Food-wise, hits and misses. I don’t see myself coming here regularly in the near future for the pasta but the mains, sides and risottos look tempting.
Healthy-tasting Elderflower Iced Tea and velvety Mushroom Soup.
Pumpkin soup was smooth and flavoursome, with just the right amount of cream. Love the sour crunch from the seeds in this Iced Passion Fruit Tea.
Lemon Prawn Parppadelle (add $0.90). Doesn’t look like a lot on the plate, but you’ll be surprised how filling it is. The combination of flavours and texture is marvellous. Pleasantly tart zesty lemon pomodoro sauce, sweet tomatoes, grilled prawns, chewy pasta and thinly sliced garlic which added another flavour dimension and delightful crunch.
Spicy Diablo Crab and Prawn (add $1.90) looks impressive. But looks can be deceiving. While I must commend on the generous portion of succulent crab claw meat and fresh prawns, the spicy egg sauce in addition to the chilli strands was overwhelming. I was startled by the spiciness and immediately regretted mixing in the chilli strands into the pasta.
Mushroom Aglio Olio ($13.50) was a disaster. Imagine my dismay when a plate of soggy pasta arrived in front of me. I even questioned the waiter if the pasta was meant to be sitting in a puddle of oily water. Ah boy gave a sheepish smile and nodded. Garlic flavour was severely lacking too.
Sea salt caramel ($6.90) was passable, although I could not detect much saltiness. Apart from being moist, the cake itself was mediocre. The unique part was the popping candy- quite fun to have the crystals sizzling in the mouth. The chopped peanuts married well with the chocolate sauce.

A lovely surprise from a good friend to me to celebrate my promotion.  Understand from him the whole cake cost around $40 which is quite expensive. The cheese flavour is very thick and creamy and is not too sweet. There are some crusted nuts inside which make it crunchy and flavourful. The caramel sauce was not too thick on it which added that little sweet natural flavour to it. Good to serve at least 10 to 14 people by cutting into smaller pieces.

My friend chose the 'Black & White, Scallop & Crab', while I opted for the 'Spicy Diablo Crab & Prawn'. We got a Soup of the Day ~ Wild Mushroom Soup + Salad together. When our pasta arrived at our table, i realised that the portions were quite substantial! The Wild Mushroom Soup contained lots of garlic & I found it overpowering! The salad was refreshing. For the 'Black & White, Scallop & Crab', it's Interwoven Egg and Squid-Ink Tagliolini with crabs and scallops in white wine consomme. If it is squid-ink pasta alone, i probably won't dare to try. But this is rather interesting & the taste was good!

The Spicy Diablo Crab & Prawn is Egg Tagliolini with prawns and crab claw tossed in a spicy egg sauce. The presentation of the dish is nice as you see the whole chunk of crab meat piled up! It's slightly spicy but not over spicy, it may be too mild for those who love their chilli! When i compared these two main dish, i prefer the first one.

Truffle fries that come with truffle cream sauce. The truffle taste is there and most of us love this. Most truffle fries from other places do not differ much from normal fries, so I would really recommend this if you would like to try real truffle fries with the taste being there. The fries are thick fries instead of those 'macdonald's' fries.

Mushroom soup
The mushroom bits are grind into very tiny pieces so the soup generally take creamy and grainy. This version of mushroom soup relates to those thick authentic ones. Although there aren't any visible chunks of mushroom, the tiny bits of mushroom was good enough to bring out the mushroom soup taste

Saffron and Caviar Risotto
$19.90
Saffron infused and certainly hand-made risotto, inclusive of char-grilled juicy prawns and scallops. The risotto is thick and clumpy, which wasn't really nice. But I have to say the huge chunk of prawns and scallops were really awesome! Everything was perfected with the hill of caviar, giving the risotto a salty touch to the tastebuds.

Platypus are very popular and well-received for its handmade pastas. I think same goes to the risotto as well.
The restaurant are beautifully adorned with lightbulbs on the ceilings and cushioned chair, giving diners a relaxing and enjoyable night. However, it may get really crowded during peak periods, like when i went on a friday evening!

Had the Truffle fries ($6.90) too, Truffle taste was strong too withe shaved Truffles on top but I find the fries too thin. I would have preferred thicker fries instead. Ordered other pasta but all were just ordinary, nothing fantastic. The Wild Mushroom Risotto, Scallop and Crab ($17.50) as well as the Meatball Garganelli ($15.50) were not impressive at all, should just give them a miss. The meatballs in Meatball Garganelli were bland tasteless except for the Pomodoro sauce of the pasta. The Risotto was alright but tasted quite mild generally.

Overall, the place is a good choice to savor all types of pasta especially those with truffle. Some items could be quite disappointing, perhaps best to just go for the recommended items only.

I've visited the Platypus Kitchen outlet which is conveniently located at Bugis Junction. The exterior seemed to be beautifully designed which gives out a form of modern elegance at simplicity's best.

Platypus Kitchen believes that gourmet cuisine should be affordable yet quality must not be forgone. The interior decorations are also creative and well thought of such that the entire place has already given customers some excellent impressions even before they order.

Their set lunch menu allows you to choose between hot soup or side salad along with your choice of beverages, some of which are pretty interesting. My buddy and I both went with the Roasted Pumpkin Soup, which would cost $3.90 on its own if we decide to go for ala carte. The soup was beautifully presented and were rich and full of true pumpkin taste, without any hint of unwanted preservatives. The soup alone was well-seasoned enough that we totally skipped the pepper! We also got the Mango Passion Fruit Tea (not in picture), which were very refreshing as well!

Everything was very efficient! The Truffle Fries ($5.90) came to our table even before we finished our soup. These thick cut fries were perfectly seasoned with white truffle oil then topped with perfectly shaved truffles, it was more than amazing! Definitely the best truffle fries I've ever had! The truffle taste were strong but not overpowering on those crispy non-oily fries. Highly recommended to order! The menu online showed that the price is $6.90 but they probably lowered the price which is great because it shows that they're definitely not those kind of restaurants that are all for profits!

The restaurant is especially well-known for their vast selection of fresh handmade pastas and risottos at pocket-friendly prices. One of their signature pastas, the Black & White, Scallop & Crab Pasta ($14.80), appealed to me the most in terms of colours and ingredients. This dish involves 2 kinds of pasta, for which the egg and squid-ink Tagliolini were nicely interwoven to create the attractive presentation. Generous amount of fresh crab meat, scallops and tomatoes were also included in the white wine consomme, which I find may be quite little, but from what I read from the menu, this was purposely cooked in traditional style and I could actually have asked for it to be more saucy. But ultimately, it was a really great dish and the handmade pasta were amazing! On its own, the dish cost up to $17.50 ala carte price.

My buddy ordered the Saffron & Caviar Risotto ($16.80) which costs up to $19.90 ala carte price. This saffron infused risotto were seasoned to perfection, not too wet nor dry. It was then topped with generous amount of fresh char-grilled prawns and scallops, finished with a good amount of caviar and fine herbs. On its own, its very aromatic and the caviar was my favourite part to mix!

We figured that since their appetizers and mains were so good, it would be a regretful idea to skip their desserts. So we got the Bailey's Extraordinaire ($8.90), which is basically a chilled alchol-infused mudpie served with crisp biscotti and shaved chocolate, topped with rich chocolate sauce. This was best enjoyed with the difference in textures by adding every spoon of mudpie on the biscotti to indulge. Perfect dessert makes an awesome ending!

Overall, every dish that came to our table were of top-notched quality with fresh and some organic ingredients to create unique flavours without adding any bad addictives that could make the dish unhealthy. The service at this restaurant was also flawless! Simply perfect! It could be one of the rarest service experience I've ever encountered unless you include hotels' and overseas' experiences. The waitstaff were all well-trained with great attitude and knowledge. Not forgetting the lovely ambience, Platypus Kitchen truly provides diners with experience close to perfection. Excellent thumbs up!

They have set meals ($16.90) which is perfect for people who do not want to burst their wallets on a good plate of pasta. This includes a plate of pasta, a side dish (salad or soup) and drinks. They are also very nice to have included other options which you can have by paying a little bit more.

For example, i had the Crispy Parma Ham Carbonara (+ $1.90). The ham is indeed crispy, which does its name right. Overall the pasta is good but it had be better with stronger flavour and softer noodles. I felt it was a bit too hard for my liking. More sauce perhaps would be better. The ham helps to make the pasta more platable with its saltiness. Good combination. Excellent pairing.

Besides the pasta i had the Pumpkin Soup, which comes with the set. Kudos to the presentation and the taste of the soup! I love the way it looked, however strangely, and the pumpkin taste.

My friend ordered the Overloaded Truffle Carbonara (he had the premium set which cost $19.90, and so he need not pay more for this pasta). I only had a small bite and disliked it immediately for its strong mushroom taste. I almost ordered that. Thank goodness i was swayed by the Crispy Parma Ham.

I also ordered their cocktail in exchange for a normal drink. I had the Momo-Lychee Ale (+$4.90) while my friend had the Honey and Basil Ale ($5.90). The alcohol content is very low, at 2.9%. They were very good too! I didn't think i was drinking beer or vodka in it. The Honey and Basil Ale is in fact quite nice though it is actually Heineken and Honey mixed together with Basil leaves. Its so good that it didnt taste anything like Heineken. Each tumblr fill 3 glasses and so i think thats really value for money.

Last but not least we also ordered the acclaimed Truffle Fries ($6.20)! They were so so good. Not only because of the strong truffle taste buy the fries themselves were crispy and so light. It wasn't very oily either and that contributed to the light taste. Even after it was left for like 30 minutes, its still good. Terrific!

What better way to end off dinner then dessert? I got the Salted Caramel Cake ($6.90) which came adorned with a little heart. How cute. Initially i didn't know the small toppings were sugar but salt. But the second bite onwards i noticed something popping in my mouth. Its actually the sugar toppings. Reminiscent of our childhood lollipop with the popping sugar. Its quite cool and make the dessert quite fun to eat.

Overall i am pleased with the food. The only thing is when my friend and i had to wait awhile before we caught the attention of the service staff. They do not seem to be attentive to their customers' needs. Other than that they were polite which is good.

Nicholas Lin or Nick, the very young and good looking chef (singles, you are free to swoon) and owner of Platypus restaurants and Blue Magnolia patisserie in Singapore, is determined to make your dining experience at Platypus Kitchen pleasant and affordable (Nick said they will do their best to offer their signature dishes $20 and below).

Nick revealed to us many times how he dislikes misrepresentation. Hence, if there's another tag line suitable for Platypus Kitchen, it would be "What you see is what you get."

Time to see it for yourselves! Do remember to eat before you continue reading the entire post! Don't blame me for feeling hangry later, ok? Yes, HANGRY. Short for angry and hungry. LOL

Let's start with the appetizers.
Crab Cakes ($12.90, soon to be $9.90)

Mozarella-stuffed balls of risotto, breaded in panko then deep fried and served over rich pumpkin puree. DDMT! (Die Die Must Try)

This is how our table look like with the appetizers and drinks. We were served with Platypus Kitchen's mixologist inspired drink creations. Their Momo-Lychee Ale (set price $6.90) (lower right corner on the above photo) is refreshingly good. It is a larger beer flavoured with fresh peach and lychee nectar then garnished with mint and fresh lychees. I personally prefer their Smith's Ale though (lower left corner on the photo above). It is larger beer infused with green apples and lemon, then garnished with apples, lemon and passion fruit. The taste of the green apple somehow overpowers the beer taste so it's perfect for a non-beer drinker like me.

Hangry already? Haha! Wait for the main course...

Tadaaaaaaaaa!!!
Saffron and Caviar Risotto ($19.90)

Saffron infused risotto with char-grilled prawns and scallops then fished with sustainable caviar and fine herbs.
Care for a spoonful of this awesome dish? This is OH-SO-GOOOOOOD and reasonably priced too. DDMT (Die die must try)!

Squid-Ink Scallops Ragout ($16.50)
Squid-Ink Tagliolini served with seared bay scallops in a light garlic-dashi sauce. Nicholas said it will not stain your teeth. If you are a fan of squid-ink dishes, you must try this. Nick said it won't stain your teeth.

Truffle Carbonara
Egg Tagliatelle with double-smoked bacon and mushrooms in a truffle egg-yolk sauce. This dish spells heaven to me. 'Nuff said.

Pressed Pork Belly ($19.90)
Supple crispy skin pork belly served with braised apples, garden vegetables and a honey and clove apple glaze. This dish is very sweet and hearty. I made a mental note to order this for my girl next time, she will surely love it.

And I saved one of the bests for last! Presenting...

Spicy "Diablo" Crab and Prawn
Egg Tagliolini with prawns and crab claw tossed in a spicy egg sauce. Another heavenly creation by the genius chef.

I am not so much into spicy food but this dish left quite an impression to my taste buds. Yes, it was THAT good and not too spicy. Another DDMT!

Dying from hunger already? Wait, we have not tried the desserts!

Iced Sea Salt Caramel ($8.90)
Sea salt and caramel butter cream, chocolate peanut butter brittle, ganache and popping candy. Yes, POPPING candy!!! We were all joking around that we should record a video to show you how the popping candy pops in our mouth. In the end, we just indulge ourselves with this sweet treat.

NOTE:
I had a taste of everything down to the dessert. The servings were NOT entirely mine, we all shared for food tasting indulgence.

Platypus Kitchen, a relatively new store in Bugis Junction. There wasnt a crowd when i went, so i had a low expectation for the restaurant. I ordered the Pressed pork belly ($19.90) and it is one of the nicest variation that i have had before. The skin is crispy, and the dish is served with apple and carrot sauce to go with it. The fruity sweet taste of the sauce goes great with the dish. The waiters are very efficient and serve the dishes promptly.
