As of the time of this review, Poh Kee Satay at Kovan is my favourite stall for satay hands down. In fact, I patronize the stall so often that stall owner Florence, has come to see me as a big-spender VIP customer. Bad for the wallet but in return I get perks like cutting queues even during her busiest days.Customers get to choose from 3 available meats – mutton, pork or chicken satay, which are grilled over a charcoal fire, giving the succulent meat a smoky burnt flavor that really tops off the experience. It’s really a matter of personal taste, but I would recommend trying the mutton which is devoid of the pungent tang that causes many people to avoid it in the first place.A meal of satay would just not be complete without the ketupat and the peanut sauce, both of which are done fabulously. The ketupat is sublime, not too dry or soft and it goes brilliantly with the peanut sauce that has this great gravelly texture, with just enough crunch for that added enjoyment. At fifty to sixty cents a stick for your choice of mutton, pork or chicken satay, my standard order of 20 pieces each for mutton and satay would cost me $23.60 with a couple of ketupats thrown in for good measure. That is slightly heavy on the wallet, but for the pure satay goodness, I just don’t see myself stopping anytime soon! continue reading
