I was running errand in Hougang central so I drop by the Kopitiam at Hougang mall for dinner. They are sorta under revamp or something, quite a few usual stalls had moved. No more fave char kway tiao and hokkien mee. After walking one round I decided to try the Ah Ma mee hoon kway at Qiu Lian Ban Mian.Ah Ma mee hoon kway $5.00This type of mee hoon kway look similar to the Hakka 算盘子 but is made of mainly flour instead of yam. There was generous serving of caixin, some minced pork, beehoon and ikan bilis. The round shaped mee hoon kway is thicker and not cooked thoroughly...center still taste like flour, not nice. Luckily there is half a bowl of beehoon which I finished, leaving a pile of mee hoon kway behind. I better stick to regular ban mian next time. continue reading

Decided to patronize Qiu Lian Ban mian after having the craving for so long! Qiu lian ban mian as made its name for selling awesome ban mian in the coffee shops/food courts. And so I ordered my all-time favourite- ban mian. What I love best about qiu lian ban mian is that it has a tasty soup base, and they usually fill the soup to the brink of the bowl.. The meatballs are also delicious, as they are really well-marinated and quite big, which makes biting crunchy. The addition of ikan bilis and some pepper would makes it taste better! continue reading

Qiu lian ban mian used to sell really awesome handmade noodles. I feel that the standard has dropped a little but it is still pretty good. The ban mian is chewy in texture and not overcooked until it is too soft. I think that is the best part - the just nicely cooked noodles. The soup is tasty as well with a generous serving of anchovies and fried onions. A great dish on a cold day as the ban mian provides a lot of warmth. continue reading

The ban mian actually does not taste as good as I expected - It is way too soft and the sizes are totally off - some are too thick while some are too thin . I don't mean for them to be of exact size, but at least similar size that are not totally , entirely different - this is because the cooking time for various different thickness of ban mian is different . Some would either be under cook or over cook. - THIS, is my main concern. The soup, however, taste good. Maybe because of the msg, maybe not. But I don't really feel thirsty after drinking the soup - but I did drank plain water after that. The vegetables should be given more - i asked for more, but none was like given . continue reading
