Having been to the Quality Hotel Marlow's Porridge Buffet at least twice for dinner and once for supper, I gathered *Edwin and *Gerald here for our gathering again. This time, I decided I have to write about it.

I was never a porridge fan, hence the raves about this Taiwanese porridge buffet did not entice me at all, even though I resided just a stone's throw away from where I stay. The first time I went there was with my family - and to my surprise, the spread was impressive and the sweet potato porridge was extremely smooth.

Over these couple years, I returned to enjoy the sumptuous comfort food, even converting *Gerald who was definitely not a porridge fan as well.

There is the Laksa counter, where the friendly Chef is on stanby, ready to pour piping hot, tasty laksa soup into the prior-prepared bowls of noodles whenever a diner stands in fron of this counter. Look at the steamy hot Laksa - spicy and rich in flavor, and the Laksa is filled with lovely ingredients such as dried tofu sponge (taupok), quail eggs, beansprout and cockles.

Now, this is where the two large pots of porridge are - usually they would have a pot of plain porridge and a flavored one. Tonight, in lieu of sweet potato porridge, they served a very delicious peanut and cuttlefish porridge - light, and flavorful. From the the array of cheese, preserved vegetable dishes, salted eggs, shallots etc, I decorated my porridge with a little dash of this and that, adding on to the flavor.

Lidded metal capsules concealed a lot of other savoury goodies, fret not. Let's see what else did I feast on here. There you go - check out the sumptuous spread of fried fish, fresh shrimps, tantalizing Chilli Crab, delicious Chicken Curry, and a variety of braised items - eggs, duck meat, chicken feet and dried tofu sponge (taupok).

Quality Hotel is one of my favourite places to get my porridge supper fix. Whenever we have a late lunch, we tend to skip dinner and head to here to have porridge instead. I have been here like countless times, I can’t believe I haven’t even blogged about it yet!

You may be wondering who will travel to Balestier Road at this time of the day just for porridge. Well, the fact that the Quality Cafe only accepts walk-ins during supper time (no reservations) and that there’s always a long queue outside the restaurant just before supper time starts, you’d know how popular this place really is.

By the time we are seated in the restaurant, the buffet line is already swarmed with people and the one-time special dish of chilli crabs is always the first to go. I tried joining the queue once to see if I might land myself with a piece of crab, the mother-daughter team in front of me just swept away every morsel off the chafing dish, leaving just the gravy for me to frown upon and roll my eyes. Oh well.

The variety of food isn’t huge but good enough for a late night supper. You get two choices of porridge – sweet potato and chicken with braised peanuts. We normally go for the sweet potato one as it’s plain and we can just ‘decorate’ it with whatever condiments we want. Fermented beancurd, crispy ikan bilis (anchovies) & peanuts, preserved mustard greens, meat floss, canned black bean fish and achar (pickled vegetables) seem so mediocre but they are BIG in flavours. Put a bit of everything in your bowl of hot, piping porridge and then mix all up. Just this bowl of mixed porridge is good enough on its own! Of course, with so many other dishes to dig into, why should we just stop at that?

The beef rendang and squids with thai green chilli sauce are my favourites! The meat is so tender, it just shreds off with a gentle poke. The squids are blanched to perfection. They are so springy, every bite is like a bouncy chew. Coupled with the formidable green chilli sauce, I could just eat plates and plates of it (if only squids are without cholesterol!).

The steamed prawn is the next most popular item there. Most tables around us just fill plates with prawns (to the brim) but we only ate like 3 or 4 pieces. I just don’t understand why prawns are such a big thing at buffets. Are people just trying to eat to get their money’s worth? The thing is, these prawns are not even of the best quality. Small to medium size, don’t taste sweet and the shells stick to the flesh which makes it a little cumbersome to peel.

Some other decent dishes include braised chicken feet, roast chicken, braised duck, steamed egg and curry chicken. Rice is also available for those who prefer it to porridge.

Helmed by Chef Donald Sai, with more than 27 years experience in F&B industry, Quality Cafe launched Authentic Asian Buffet for lunch. This buffet consist of many popular local dishes such as laksa, popiah, chicken rice, roast duck, cereal prawn, steamed sea bass with olive, otah and lots more from soup to desserts.

To start, I recommend you start with popiah. Popiah is a Hokkien style type of spring roll, where the skin are made thinly from sticky soft dough. The skin here is very moist and soft, with the right thickness. The vegetables, sweet sauce and chilli is well balance. The fillings is not wet and the crush peanuts gave the crunchy texture. The best part, there is chef stationed there to make sure you get the best popiah every time.

Next is the bowl of Laksa. The ingredients here is very simple. Rice noodle, bean sprout, fish cake, boiled eggs, the laksa gravy, laksa leaf and chilli. The gravy has is quite thick and full of coconut flavour. In Peranakan terms, the lemak is quite shiok. Simple but delicious.

For main meal, the chicken rice here is a must try. The rice if fragrant and flavourful. The rice cooked to al-dente with a good chicken stock. The chicken is quite tender especially the thigh part, however the breast can be a bit though. The plus side, they also Thai Chicken Feet. Rather than chicken feet, it is more like the skin from the chicken feet. It is crunchy and springy in texture. The marination is just right for my palate, not overly spicy. They also provide the full condiments such as chilli, ginger juice, dark soy sauce and acar (spicy pickled cucumber)

Some dishes to accompany the chicken rice is their Otah and Roast Duck. The Otah is the Chef Special Dish and made in house in Quality Cafe's kitchen. It has a nice texture, smooth and resilient at the same time. It can be slightly salty, which Chef Donald mention is due to the Thai Chilli Paste. The roast duck has a nice crispy skin and the meat is very tender.

For fish lover, they serve a huge steam sea bass with dried turnip (cai bo). The sea bass is quite huge, about 50 cm long. The cooking method and olive really bring out the taste of sea bass. However, as it is left in the bain marie, the steam fish slowly become over cook and harden. The frog leg that are fried with spring onion and ginger here is also quite huge. It is one of the biggest size frog leg I ever see. I heard that the more frog legs you eat, the stronger your leg become in swimming.

Like many buffet places, there are some dishes that not up to standard. In this case, I would not suggest the Char Kway Teow, or any of their deep fried stuff.

If you have enough of your fill, time to move on to desserts. Build your won Cendol or Ice Kacang is available. You can choose your own ingredients to create your Singapore cold desserts just the way you like it. Or you can choose from range of peranakan desserts or goreng pisang with your coffee or tea.

The service staff here is very attentive and efficient to clear the dirty plates from your table. During our weekday lunch here, the cafe is pretty packed.

Overall, if you are looking for quality buffet of Singapore local food, you can give Quality Cafe a try. The price is very reasonable and you can get the authentic Singaporean food. Cheers!!

Thank you Faith and Quality Cafe team for the food tasting invitation.

Quality Cafe serves a large variety of Asian dishes in a buffet format with a certain emphasis on their authentic Taiwanese porridge.

I started the buffet with a bowl of porridge and some side dishes. The porridge was not what I expected it to be. It did not carry that subtle sweetness that truly makes a bowl of porridge Taiwanese. It's texture was done right though, with a good ratio of rice and water that made it light easy to swallow.

There was a huge selection of condiments which included traditional favorites like the salted egg and pickled vegetables to very Singaporean choices like Ikan Bilis, these complemented the lightly flavored porridge well...

Sometimes if you go early you get to have crab, I manage to grab 1 claw but the meat is not fresh so it's 'powdery'. The rest of the food was alright. Would return again as it's affordable.

When comes to having porridge, Quality Cafe porridge buffet always come into my mind. The choices from the buffet spread may not be as many as compared from the other restaurant, but the food standard here is quite good and delicious. My favourite is their crispy pork floss and fried ikan billis. Both are very crispy and goes very well with their tapioca porridge. Their braised tofu and duck meat are equally delicious as well. The price here is reasonable and great for family gathering.

It's certainly out of my expectation that there would be a long queue before 10.30pm but I was terribly wrong. There were about 20 people in front of us when we reached at 10.20pm. Good thing was the restaurant has a bigger than expected sitting area and thus we need not wait to get a table.

Simple but hearty meal
