Soba dishes here so far hasn't disappoint me yet. A trusty brand name i can count on for my soba cravings! =)

I love set dinner when i'm feeling hungry and want a bit of everything. And looking through the menu, i'm so tempted to order everything! Haha. In the end, i chose Asari Tonyu Soba set $23.80 which consist of chilled soba, clam soup, braised pork belly rice, salmon sashimi, chawammushi and dessert of the day. Sounds good from the above description!! I was super full after my meal. The food here hardly disappoint and is tasty! Good choice for Japanese food.

According to the first page of Menu, Soba was a kind of healthy handmade noodles. Using natural Wheat Flour and Soba Flour, dough was kneaded and boiled freshly. Proven to be good for liver, colon and heart, it was also beneficial in anti-aging and beauty. Among extensive choices, I opted for noodles under Warm Soba category. It was in soup with bee, fishcakes, vegetables and egg, portion was rather huge. Of course price was steep, $18.80 for a bowl of simple meal yet the value was much greater.

The chilled soba was nice too but in my opinion the soba was not cold enough.

The mixed katsu came with a softshell crab which was really crispy and nice

Of all dishes in the set, my favourite has to be the egg omelette with mentaiko sauce! It has a layered texture, very satisfying when you chew it, and the slightly sweet flavour matches so well with the creamy mentaiko sauce! It's so much going on in the mouthful.

The sashimi is fresh, and the natural seafood sweetness is tasty.

Chawanmushi might not have as much seafood as I wish, but still, the silky texture of the steamed egg is pleasantly good. There are a few pieces of flavourful chicken at the bottom of the chawanmushi. Lovely taste.

Shokado set B ($21.90), on the other hand, consists of a bowl of warm handmade soba with corn and beancurd skin, salmon in ginger sauce, prawn salad with tartar sauce, green mussel topped with miso paste, and the chawanmushi.

I really enjoy eating the warm soba! The broth is simple and light, only had a hint of shoyu flavour, but good enough as in you get to taste the grain fragrant of the soba. The texture of the soba is very good too, not soggy at all. Love it!

Salmon in ginger sauce is surprisingly good. The skin of the salmon is crisp, and the ginger sauce is slightly sweet with a hint of ginger flavour, very appetizing!

Each set comes with a serving of dessert of the day, which is the green tea mochi. The chewy texture glutinous pieces has a rich green tea flavour, and a dash of finely grated peanuts coated outside. Taste quite bland I reckon. Not a fans of it.

For me, I don't like the yam topping because it tasted so weird and sticky. So if I eat there again next time, I will tell the waiter that I don't want the topping. The salmon was fresh and tasty though. Love it because I'm a salmon lover!

THIS CHILLED SOBA IS SUPER YUMMY. OMG. The soba sauce was very tasty. Quite salty but not that salty, which went well with the soba. The BEST PART was, the SOBA WAS SUPER SPRINGY AND CHEWYYYYYY. Best soba I'd ever ate!!!

Fresh orange! Perfect for digestion after a full meal.

May come back again, occasionally, for celebrations only because the price is not that cheap. Ambiance is very Japanese. The service is very satisfying

I must say the soba at Shimbashi Soba located at Nex Serangoon Central is really good. The soba is tangy and fresh, supposed to be eaten with the duck stew in the set. The duck stew consists of vegetables and duck meat which smelt very fragrant and tasted great too. It costs $18.90 for the set which I felt was worth the money. I like the ambience of the restaurant as it is tucked at a cosy corner.

The chicken ball was not very impressive, just stuffed chicken bits in teriyaki sauce. Potato salad was done in a japanese style, so it had a nice mix of crunchy cucumber and vegetables in it.

Chilled soba choice with mushrooms and egg!I really liked this dish because of how healthy it was and tasted very refreshing. However, I wouldn't say it would be for everybody. The Japanese Yam is also known as "San yao" and doesn't exactly have a distinct taste. The Natto and Japanese Yam in the same dish caused the noodle and the sauce to seem sticky, but those who are found of Natto wouldn't be disappointed in the dish!

Chose the radish soup soba!;D
The food was served in around 15minutes and its presentation looks good. They separated the various ingredients into small little plates and had them placed neatly. Like it that way cause I will be able to choose the amount of spring onions and other ingredients I want in my soba.(:

First I tried was the soup. It was simple and refreshing. The soba was at the right texture too. And next I just dumped almost every ingredient into the bowl and just enjoyed it;D
The taste, I would say was pretty authentic and original. But I still felt the price was a little too high since im not one who really appreciates such original Japanese food. Nonetheless…I still recommend it since its delicious afterall!(:

Truth be told, I was not too impressed with the variety of soba mains offered - it appeared that it was the same options either served warm or cold.

A somewhat hasty decision was made, fueled by a rumbling stomach, and I ordered the warm Ume Ten Oroshi Soba ($17.80, buckwheat noodles topped with grated daikon, Japanese plum, wild Japanese vegetables and mushrooms). The husband went with the recommendation of our waitress and ordered the chilled Tenchirashi Soba ($15.20, buckwheat noodles topped with tempura of prawns, vegetables and mushrooms and a wobbly poached egg).

Thinking with our stomachs rather than our heads, we also ordered some side dishes - a plate of Salmon Yukke ($9.80, strips of salmon sashimi mixed in a spicy sauce and topped with a quail egg yolk) and Kamo Shio ($10.80, grilled duck with salt on the side).

Now on to the pictures and verdict...

The duck tasted pretty good, with a smoky flavour and an unexpected yet delicious hint of foie gras. However, at $2.16 per thin slice, we were careful to savour each morsel.

This was the star dish of the night, and dare I say it, the dish that saved the entire dinner from being blah and bland. The sauce was punchy enough to keep the taste buds interested while the quail egg yolk tied the whole thing together with its creamy consistency and richness.

This was my bowl of warm noodle and when they say warm, they do mean warm so be prepared to be disappointed if you, like me, were expecting a bowl of pipping hot soup. But I'm guessing this is the optimal way to enjoy soba? Anyway, overall it failed to impress but it wasn't inedible, just not satisfying. Perhaps I was expecting the soup to be more flavourful, almost like a ramen stock, but this was overwhelmingly lacking in depth. I'm usually ok with clean flavours but this felt, well, too clean. The ume did give it an occasional burst of tang, but it came more as an undesirable shock to the tongue because the sourness stood out too much.

You probably can easily imagine how this dish tastes like since you've probably eaten tempura, a poached egg and soba, albeit separately. Again, it was underwhelming. And my husband, who usually has a ferocious appetite, said he was stuffed because of all the flour. It felt like eating starch with starch.

Overall, it wasn't a bad meal, just not satisfying. I guess I'll be exploring the other restaurants the next time I'm at Nex!

Salmon was good and fresh, and they were THICK slices, yay!

Prices were kinda expensive, and the soba really didn't live up to our expectations
gave it a lower rating cause the side dishes outshoned the main dish- soba.

Initially was expecting the portion to be pretty small as the set said that it was 'mini', however the portion came up to be pretty big. With warm/chilled soba + mini don + fruits. Would say a definite worth of the price.

Total bill only came up to be $30.00 for two pax with the promotion package.
Will sure to return again.
