Ambience at Sun With Moon is modern minimalist zen, well suited to a refined yet casual dining experience, living up to its name of combining 2 disparate elements. The large, spacious interior with clean lines benefits from its window side location of Wheelock Place mall, offering a view of the busy street below, along with natural lighting in the day. Contrast of light and shadows, created by bright, well placed spotlights, create an elegant setting over the dark wooden furniture and booths, while thoughtfully carved out spaces allow guests to pick from large communal group dining, to small intimate alcove dining. They even offer a large selection of magazines for browsing!

Service at Sun With Moon is near fine dining status. The sharply dressed staff move and speak with a quiet, professional air, working quickly and efficiently, be it clearing tables, taking orders, or presenting the bill. There is the customary Japanese courtesy and hospitality, I notice staff bow slightly when speaking with guests, and exude a sense of personalised attention. However, I note that not all staff have the same level of product knowledge, especially if questioned about the rather extensive menu. Still, the level of service provided here exceeds that of many other restaurants.

Food at Sun With Moon is all about authentic, traditional Japanese dishes, with several modern Japanese items. The extensive menu even has items which you won't be able to get in other Japanese restaurants in Singapore! Executive Chef Mr. Toshio Sawai heads up the kitchen, bringing to the table over 30 years of experience in Japanese culinary arts, offering dishes that are of high quality, and presented beautifully. Generally, I find each dish to be tasty, with an emphasis on flavour and freshness. Portion sizes are designed for individuals, though set meals are the norm here, and are incredibly filling! Prices are similar to other restaurants, budget about SGD $55 per person for a full meal here.

Loved the zesty, sour sweet Yuzu Umeshu (SGD $9)! A blend of plum sake, with juice from yuzu fruit harvested in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan, this light, chilled beverage is refreshing and thirst quenching. Good!

The Kamameshi Unagi & Yakiniku (SGD $31.80 Set Meal) here consists of an individual pot, where Japanese white rice is steamed together with a light katsuobushi (bonito fish flakes) and dashi (seaweed stock), along with aromatics such as straw mushrooms, carrots, lotus roots, chestnuts, konjac (elephant yam), and shredded egg. The rice absorbs all the flavour, making it incredibly fragrant and delicious! Mix it with the toppings of sweet unagi (grilled freshwater eel in teriyaki sauce), savoury thin strips of yakiniku (sauteed beef and onions), crunchy edamame, earthy seaweed strips, and a yummy soft boiled egg! Highly recommended!

Served in Sun With Moon from 01 - 03 January 2016 as part of their New Year celebrations, the Ozoni / Zoni (SGD $12) here closely resembles the style in Tokyo, Kanto region. It features a soup made with dashi (seaweed stock), with a signature square mochi rice cake that has been lightly grilled. Other ingredients add depth of flavour and body to this soup, including chicken chunks, straw mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, carrots, spinach, kamaboko (fish cake), taro root, burdock root, and parsley. This light, savoury sweet soup is a great appetizer.

My Aburi Seafood Kamameshi consisted of salmon roe and seared prawn, scallop and salmon cubes. Hidden within the steamed rice were ingredients like chestnuts. It was alot like bamboo rice to me. Personally, I did not think it was nice...it was very ordinary to me, though my friend liked it. I will be back to try their other food but won't be ordering their Kamameshi again.

I came here with two ex-colleagues-cum-friends and this place was really great for us to do some catching up.

Big sisters of mine with 2 garfield soft toys they collected after the recent Garfield Run.

The set meal here is expensive - one set meal for example (which I had wanted to order), was the Sukiyaki & Tempura set, which comes with sliced Aus beef and vegetables in hotpot, a cracked egg, rice, soup and assorted deep fried tempura.

I did not order that as I was worried it might turn out too much for one person, on a diet too, to be having.

So....

I ordered the ala carte sukiyaki ($17.80)! The beef was served raw with soup broth. It cooked pretty quickly, about a few minutes or so. From this...

Big sister Serene felt that she likes the pork here - so she ordered an ala carte Pork Shogayaki ($12.80) instead of having the set, which comes with soft shell crab tempura, soup and rice. If you order rice separately, each order will cost you a hefty $3, which every Singaporean knows is expensive to pay for a bowl of rice!

Big sister Christina ordered a Bara Chirashi set, which came with a soup, (a super small sized) chanwamushi - steamed egg - and the main dish (Sushi rice bowl with grilled eel, flame-seared salmon and scallops!). This set cost $28.80.

When dining in a Japanese restaurant, how can you leave out the salad? I ordered the Bacon & Mozzarella Caesar Salad ($12.80). The appetising dish was well presented in a really huge bowl and was served with a special sauce, which I just poured it all over the salad without thinking twice. (Here goes the diet plan!)

The salad tasted fresh and came with fresh mozzarella cubes which really added flavour to the otherwise typical mix. What also gave it a winning edge was also its thick cut bacon strips, that came with some fat on it. It tasted really good and I would seriously recommend this dish to anyone not on a diet.

Lastly, it's dessert time! You cannot leave Sun with Moon restaurant without trying out their desserts. It's one of the most lightweight desserts I've eaten and this is one of the top choices of my review tonight.

What else? DESSERT TIME!!

For people who love variety in their food, I recommend the dessert trio ($9.80). The dessert comes with a goma pudding, a small slice of tofu cheese cake and green tea ice-cream topped with red beans. You will not regret this.

My favourite was the goma pudding (also known as black sesame pudding). They managed to marry both rich black sesame paste and silky milk pudding together, making the smooth and bouncy texture of their matrimony that much more exciting to eat.

I also ordered a Matcha Tiramisu (Green Tea Tiramisu), it costs $6.80. It tasted so light and fluffy, it was a perfect end to the heavy meal.

In summary, I like the food in this place, but I feel that most food items are really expensive. I would only return if I have more money to spare!

Location:

Wheelock Place

501 Orchard Road #03-15

Singapore 238880

Tel: +65-6733-6636

Directions - From Orchard MRT Station (red line), exit the station on facing Ion Orchard. When you've exited, just turn towards your right. Walk straight and follow through to the underpass and when you've reached the end of it (there should be an escalator), use that to get to level 3. The restaurant is on this floor. (Even if you can't find it, just ask any Singaporean locals. They'll be happy to direct you to Wheelock Place.)

My last visit to Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe was years back, after hearing lots of raves. Tonight, I return to this lovely place for dinner, and to recollect its sumptuous dishes.
I was in the mood of sushi but being someone who don't eat much rice, these smaller portions of mix-and-match sushi suited me just fine (SGD$9.00 for 4 sushi rolls in 2 flavors) - one had a choice of Salmon Maki, Beef Steak Maki, Dragon Roll, Avocado Roll etc. I chose the Beef Steak Roll and Salmon Maki combination.
The Salmon Maki was tasty - salmon sashimi slices embracing rice, minced salmon with mayonnaise and topped with salmon roe. For a salmon lover, this was an indulgence of all-things-salmon. The rice was soft and the salmon was sweetly scrumptious; it was easy to love this dish.
The Beef Steak Maki was something unique to me - cheese and meat rolled with rice, topped with slices of tender beef steaks. A good combination of flavors and textures, I was glad I ordered this to try.
Finally, I satiated my craving of soft shell crabs with this Soft Shell Crab Tempura (SGD$10.80) - another interesting dish since most Japanese restaurants serve ebi tempura only. The crab is encased in a thin layer of flour and fried to a perfect crispiness, yet its natural saccharine flavor is retained. It was tempting to order another plate of this but I was feeling very full already.

daughter booked 5pax dinner at sun with moon @ wheelock to celebrate the birthday of our domestic help on 16.5.2014.
i really enjoyed the excellent lunch here on 7.5.2014. this the first time i came for dinner.
the chirashi don was very tasty, both the fresh sashimi & rice. i supposed in terms of quality of ingredients, it’s hard to beat the S$20 chirashi don lunch set at ginza kuroson, but that was lunch, this dinner.
wife & another daughter did not want a heavy set, so ordered a dobin mushi plus a okonomiyaki & salmon maki to share.
dobin mushi was ok, competent.
okonomiyaki was very good.
& salmon maki was good.
i ordered a unagi kebayaki set for myself. we shared the food of course.
it was very good. the chicken nabe came with a ball of collagen, made the soup very tasty.
the unagi kebayaki was fresh eel. i had not taken unagi for a while & this one was good!

the salmon sashimi side dish here is always good. i always add that to my lunch set for S$3.
our domestic help ordered a teriyaki cod & tempura set. i did no try. the cod looked great & the tempura had 3 large prawns, really good set!

we were attracted by the tofu cheese cake so ordered take-out to bring home as birthday cake for our domestic helper.
after eating this tofu cheese cake, i googled & found an excellent internet recipe & made my own very good tofu cheese cake. that was really fun.
for me, both lunch & dinner sets here were excellent value for money. the 5pax dinner cost S$150 though we only ordered 3 dinner sets plus some ala carte to share.

went with wife to sun with moon at wheelock for lunch on 7.5.2014. last came to sun with moon wheelock 4 months ago on 7.1.2014.

there was a 20% discount promotion for kamameshi set so i picked the unagi & gyu set & picked a kurobuta side dish (came with the set including soup & pickles & a drink). we also added a chawanmushi & a salmon sashimi (S$3.50 for each item). my wife ordered a maki & a green tea mochi parfait. we shared all the food.
the kuobuta side dish was very good. there were 4 large slices of pork which came in a tasty broth.

the kamameshi (釜饭) pot had a thick wooden cover, and they placed an hourglass for accurate timing….maybe 5mins not sure…
it was a very large helping. the rice was very fragrant, tasty & the unagi & beef were all good.

i ordered ice green tea which was included for the set & my wife added S$1 for her hot green tea.

the kochi parfait was still nice though the price went up from $4.90 couple years back to $6.80 now.
forgot to take photos of the maki (S$15) but it was quite good though not a must have item for us. after 20% discounts, the kamameshi set cost S$24. all in we paid S$60. the other place i used to go was kuriya dining at great world city. however recently, prices there had gone up quite a bit, and the lunch sets i liked are now priced at S$68pax instead of S$58pax, a 15% increase.
will come back for sure. the 20% discounts on kamameshi promotion will expire 31.5.2014.

I decided to order Tonjiri Saba Shioyaki ($17.80 ) while Little Devil ('LD”) decided on Shokado Bento ($36.80). Both lunch come with the desserts and coffee or tea.
Tonjiri Saba Shioyaki set consist of sliced pork in miso hotpot and grilled mackerel with salt. The broth of the hot pot is very robust, think and full of flavour. The sliced pork belly is slightly lean but tender. The portion of the grilled saba is slightly small, nicely grilled. Juicy with a resilient texture of the first. To accompany the meal is a bowl of white rice and a couple of grapes and agar-agar.

LD's Shokado Bento is more glamorous. Consist of 3 kind of sashimi, prawn tempura, salmon sushi, sushi roll, beef steak and mini udon noodle. The sashimi cut is quite big and fresh, the same can be said about the tempura. The sushi are combination of fresh salmon sushi and grill salmon suhi. However, we notice the sushi rice is slightly hard. The beef steak is also slightly tough and it does not melts in your mouth. A disappointing bento set.

The ice cream and coffee or tea are served after the meal. Service level are quite ordinary.
Overall, we find that the food in Sun with Moon is just alright. My Tonjiri is nicely executed as the broth are rich and robust, however the rest of the food nothing to be marvel about except for the freshness of the ingredients. Great atmosphere, but not sure if I'll be back though. Cheers!!

son was flying back to london in the evening. we wanted to go for a quick family lunch. kuriya dining was full so we decided to go sun with moon at wheelock on 7.1.2014.

there were wide choices of lunch sets which were reasonably priced. my son & i picked the S$21.80 mini beef don with kaisen (seafood) hotplate, and added S$3.50 for 3 pieces of salmon sashimi.

the beef don was excellent, very tasty & good helping of beef.
i always like dons especially chirashi don anyway.
the seafood pot included 3 pieces of unagi (eel), 2 large cut of salmon & 1 scallop. it was tasty too. the salmon sashimi was excellent, better than those served at good buffet, of sushi counter standard.
the ume (plum) jelly was good.

my daughter had the sushi A set (i think also S$21.80) which came with a pork nabe, again a good helping of shabu (thin sliced) pork which was good. the sushi looked ok but not great.

my wife had beef & tori (chicken) kamameshi (釜饭). i wasn’t a fan of kamameshi but this was very fragrant.like my wife said the kaisen kamameshi were average but this beef & chicken one had great flavours infused with the rice. excellent dish but cost a fair bit more at S$28. i would not select this myself but it was a good combination with other sets as we shared some of the food.

overall, i think sun with moon lunch sets offered quality & quite good value in the <$30 range. for higher priced sets, i would go for the S$48/S$58 mini kaisekilunc at kuriya dining, or the lunch sets or ala carte at mikuni with 50% feed at raffles discounts.

Sets are quite worth it when you can't decide what you want to eat and when you are sharing with others and want to order say, 2 sets for 3 pax.Sun with Moon has not let me down in terms of their presentation and the quality of food is always on par, however, their service has gone down in recent times. This is probably because of labor issues. The set that was ordered is Tokusen Unagi Seiro Mushi & Natsu Tempura Mori for $35.80 before GST and service charge.Tempura fried and served on the spot.

Sets are quite worth it when you can't decide what you want to eat and when you are sharing with others and want to order say, 2 sets for 3 pax.

Sun with Moon has not let me down in terms of their presentation and the quality of food is always on par, however, their service has gone down in recent times. This is probably because of labor issues.

Tempura fried and served on the spot. Was crispy and the tempura did not feel thick with oil.

Unagi & rice was served in a wooden dimsum platter and leaf. The food tasted as delectable as the presentation and the unagi covered the rice well and did not feel as if the chef was skimping at all.

Photogenic dessert, I just love the way they presented the dish. The cream on top was extremely light and not sweet at all, gentle touch without a doubt. The fluffy alternating layers gave me a refreshing holiday feeling, calm and bliss. Spoonful each fork-down, it melted immediately in mouth, such a wonderful taste. High-end place of course justified a lavish charge, I was okay with the price tag since we had our enjoyable moment here.

The same "problem" applies to the cakes... Portion too small lah! If sharing, need to snatch! Contradicting huh?

My total bill came up to about $63. *Phew blood*

Gindara Teriyaki & Ebi Tempura @S$29.80 . Grilled cod fish in teriyaki sauce served with assorted tempura. The gindara teriyaki size is very small. Ebi Tempura was crispy in the outside and the prawn is fresh.

I tried the Beef & Foie Gras Steak @S$33.80. Grilled beef sirloin and foie gras with slice apple in teriyaki sauce. It is quite innovative creation and turned out to taste delicious. The grilled beef was soft, tender and juicy and not to mention the foie gras taste awesome with the combination of the slice apple and sauce.

Salmon Teriyaki & Chicken Steak with the choice of black pepper sauce or teriyaki @S$15.80. Grilled salmon steak and chicken steak that goes well with the teriyaki sauce. The portion is quite small and not worth the value paying though. Nevertheless, the taste of the food is quite decent.

Salmon Chirashi Set @S$27.80. Nice presentation of sushi rice bowl with salmon sashimi, salmon roe and grilled salmon. My favourite fish all time. Sushi rice was sticky and tasty with the sushi vinegar taste.

I find the price is kinda pricey compared to other Japanese restaurants in Singapore that offers good Japanese food at a similar or lower price. This is my personal opinion and I may not want to return in near future given the available choices of Japanese restaurants in Singapore that offers similar dishes.

Ordered the Unagi and the Beef steamed rice set and the Hamburger Steak set for our mains. The steamed rice, known as Kamameshi, is one of the signature items. There was an hourglass served together whereby one should only start eating after all the sand flowed downwards. Not only did my Kamameshi look appealing, it tasted great too! It is steamed so a great choice for the health conscious. I simply love my Unagi while the Beef was equally great too! Haha one might really have some dilemma choosing between the two when ordering. On the other hand, I nipped a bit of my friend's hamburger set, it was flavorful but the meat was a tad too dry.

I highly recommend the black sesame goma pudding as the sesame taste was really rich with a soft tofu-like base. I am a fan of black sesame and so it really appeals to me. I am a huge matcha fan too so haha I could not leave the place without trying the green tea tofu cheesecake!
Hmm well it was not too bad but I would prefer if the matcha taste could be stronger.

In conclusion, food is good but slightly pricey but you won't go wrong if you order their signature Kamameshi and my favourite Goma pudding lol ^^

After waiting for about 20mins, we finally got a seat in the restaurant. The ambience is good for dining, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Decided to go ahead with the salmon and beef maki, which was yummy. My friend ordered the salmon terriyaki while I had the beef sukiyaki. Salmon was tasty but the side spaghetti was ordinary. The beef sukiyaki was one of the best we had, and we like that the restaurant uses half boiled eggs instead of the raw eggs at other jap restaurants. Overall a gr
