For the main course, we got to choose between Teriyaki Chicken and Butter Seared Pacific Dory with Parsley Rub, which I selected Butter Seared Pacific Dory with Parsley Rub. It was served with Olive Rice, Side Salad and Wafu dressing. Although the Olive Rice was flavourful, I felt that it was too salty on its own. The fish on the other hand was quite bland.

Lastly for dessert, we were served swiss roll and chocolate eclair. Not sure if the staffs were rushing to knocking off, as the food was served in paper plates. We did take note that it was past the usual operating hours. By this time, there was barely any air-condition in the room. The swiss roll was quite dry.
Overall the food was not to my taste. Service was barely there. I had to help myself to the iced water.

As we just recently moved into our new office in The Metropolis, a colleague bought me to try a new healthy lunch at the Lawn which is a few minutes walk from our office.

When we reached The Lawn, there was already a queue at the cashier. However, I was impressed with how efficient the food preparer and cashier and it appeared quite a seamless effort for me to get our food and found an empty table and I didn't have to wait too long even though it was lunch break.

I ordered the olive rice with chicken breast with fresh herbs. To complete my meal, I added the Soup Shot at SGD2.  I really like the flavour to the chicken meat (tender and just now). The salad and vegetables are pleasantly light and fresh! For the dressing, I selected "Me So Spicy" which is a bit too hot for me. Finally, I really like the presentation of the food!

I thanked my colleague for bring me to this new place and I will be coming back again for future lunch.

Salad can also be delicious too with the correct mixture of your favorite fruits and vegetables, and most importantly the sauce too!
Here are what we had for salad. In our bowls are only the base and toppings, as our grills and dressings are served seperately, by recommended by the outlet manager
We all had the salad bowl ($7.90), which includes mesclun salad with 5 toppings and a dressing for finish! Grills are optional and chargeable.
They have 12 dressings in total. Wasahoney, Me so Spicy which taste and smell like our belachan, Red Island, Apple Cider Vinaigrette, Perky Sesame Ginger, Citrus, Honeyball, Manly Mango, Beachy Peachy, Wafu, Maple Peanut, and lastly, Balsamico with Olive Oil.
Char-grilled Prawns with Garlic ($3.00) and Butter-seared Pacific Dory with Parsley Rub ($3.00). Prawns are definitely fresh and crunchy, while dory fish is smooth and soft!
Chicken feast!!! Hahaha. Chicken Breast with Maple Infusion ($2.00), Chicken Breast with Fresh Herbs ($2.00), Char-grilled Cajun Chicken (2.00), and Grilled Teriyaki Chicken ($2.00).
We also had Aceto Balsamico Beef Cuts ($4.00), Ben's Beef Rub ($4.00).
If you are sick of eating salads and want some real carbos, they have the Olive Rice ($7.90) which comes with additional side salad and a dressing. Although the olive rice was cold when served, but the taste of it in your mouth is pretty defining!
Their salad are definitely of standard. Extensive menu and sauces to select from, does make one fill with anxiety to finish up the ordering, but also with a wider variety, one can also repeatedly visit them again and again to try out different mixings and sauces

The Lawn Cafe is 2 plus years old hidden gem of a cafe is unlike any other. Casual, comfortable ambience? Check. Great tasting yet balanced food? Check. Premium ingredients? Check. Affordable price? Check. Flavours of both East and West? Check. Add in a brand new delivery service and The Lawn Cafe has a lot going for it!
I loved the ambience at The Lawn Cafe. The faux grass acts like a comfy carpet under your feet, and the furniture is casual and functional. Choose from either indoor seating or outdoor seating at The Lawn Cafe Biopolis. Personally, I prefer outdoor, as the Nanos building here is specifically designed to act like a wind tunnel, channelling cooling breeze along the exterior of the The Lawn Cafe.
The open kitchen and prep area provide interesting distractions while waiting to order, and I like the olden looking gas lamps hanging in a bunch. There was a blackboard near the cashier counter, and I noticed several diners accidentally knocking into it while ordering / making payment. Might be better if they moved it elsewhere.
The Lawn Cafe is largely self-service. Indicate your order on an order chit, then queue and make payment at the counter. Collect a buzzer, which will signal you to collect your order when ready.
But the real question is, what should you order at The Lawn Cafe? The base is either a Salad or Olive Rice, but there is a near endless combination of items to add on, including 13 grilled meats / seafood, 30 different salad toppings, and 12 types of salad dressing / sauces. This mind boggling variety means you could eat everyday at The Lawn Cafe and not get bored!
The basic Salad Bowl (SGD $7.90) comes with a base of fresh, crunchy lettuce, plus a choice of 5 different salad toppings, and 1 type of salad dressing sauce. The 30 salad toppings include a variety of vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, and others such as egg or tofu. You may then choose to add on 1 or 2 types of grilled meats or seafood.

Alternatively, choose the Olive Rice & Side Salad (SGD $7.90). Unlike the Thai or Greek Olive Rice, the version of Olive Rice at The Lawn Cafe is a Teochew recipe from the founder's grandmother. Each mouthful is a distinctly Asian flavour of spices. Lovely.

Sampled 10 of the 12 different salad dressing / sauces available at The Lawn Cafe. My personal favourites include Me So Spicy, a potent kick of fresh chili, sambal belachan and fresh mint; the Wasahoney, a sharp yet sweet combination of wasabi, honey and mayonnaise; and the Perky Sesame Ginger, a combination of sesame seed, coriander root and grated ginger that tastes like Chicken Rice.

The Chicken Breast With Maple Infusion is the 1st most popular grill addition at The Lawn Cafe. The moist and tender premium quality chicken breast is infused with sweet maple syrup, making it both savoury and sweet at once.

I also ordered their soup of the day which was mushroom soup. The serving size didnt impress me at first, but one slurp of it and I am sold! Chunky flavoursome mushroom soup, what is not to like about it! With a wholemeal bun to match, it this small portion is pretty filling for a side dish!

Our bowls arrived and we were left gaping at the sheer size of the portions. The team at Lawn is certainly generous! Chunk of meat covered the salad, a sight which is rarely see on a salad.

Everything was well seasons and no one taste overpower the taste of the other. It was a perfect harmony of flavours and I totally dont regret topping up for the Wasahonie sauce which is d.i.v.i.n.e!

My colleague kind of mismatch her flavours so it turned out a little weird, but it was nevertheless still pretty yummy.

All these choices didnt cost us more than 12 dollars per pax. Super reasonably prices in my opinion!

VERDICT
I think Lawn can join my list of favourite healthy eatouts, together with "Soup Spoon". Good fresh food with portions that can fill you up the whole day, (how often does that happen?), whats not to love about this place!

My only grouse is that you would need a little navigating when you head over to the lawn which is located a 15 minutes walk from Buona Vista MRT station. If you think positively, at least you are getting a healthy work out from all that walking!

Despite the sunny weather, it was not that hot even though we were seated outdoors. There were occasionally strong currents of wind despite the area being surrounded by tall office buildings. It is actually better to dine outdoors at night than indoors because the area is very breezy.

They have a 9 different salad dressing flavours to choose from and they are all made from scratch. I was glad to have the opportunity to try all flavours.

The popular choices are vinaigrette (the typical dressings for salads) and red island which I felt was too thick for salads. The maple peanut is a particularly popular choice among the ladies!

Here are some of the dressings that left me quite a bit of an impression on me.

Me So Spicy: This dressing is flaming hot and somehow reminds me of the taste of Tom Yum. I doubt I can finish my entire salad if it is drowned in Me So Spicy dressing but it is worth a try if you can tolerate spiciness.

Maple Peanut: Here's a delightful combination of maple syrup and peanut butter that will please maple-syrup-and-peanut-butter lovers. The end result is a sweet and rich flavour yet not too overwhelming for salads.

Wasahonie: Can you imagine a combination of wasabi, honey and mayonnaise? CC adored this but the wasabi was too strong for me. So much kick though.

Manly Mango: a refreshing touch of mango with hints of sour notes. A unique salad dressing!

The marination scores for this one! The prawns are marinated in their special concoction of herbs and juices. There was a hint of garlic flavour which gave it extra fragrance. They tasted more like frozen prawns though, as compared to the ones freshly sold at supermarkets.

The olive rice was not served hot but it was still acceptable. The rice was packed with flavour and carb-lovers will love this! The rice was more to the dry side but good thing was that it was not oily at all. Worth a try.

I also managed to try their hazelnut latte ($4.30) and it was amazing! There was a good balance of coffee and hazelnut flavour. If you love Coffee Bean's version, you will love this.

Overall, we had a pleasant experience at The Lawn. If you belong to the health-conscious lot, you should visit The Lawn for a satisfying yet guilt-free meal.

Butter Seared Pacific Dory with Parsley Rub (S$9.90)

The soft olive rice came with lots of chinese olive (kana chye) and a sprinkling of sauteed mushrooms atop - tasty and not oily at all. The side salad came with plenty of fresh vegetables. I chose the interesting maple peanut dressing - which is like vinaigrette with a bit of peanut butter in it. Sounds weird, but I thought it turned out pretty well, for I liked the taste of it
The fish was cooked rather thoroughly but thankfully it was still not too hard and had plenty of herbs to lift the taste. A really healthy choice of meat.

There's some inner seating with plush cushions and quite a lot of outdoor seating as well. There's free water at the side that you can help yourself to while you wait your food. Generally quite a good meal, I'll say.

What we recently discovered was a hidden gem nestled among the high rise office buildings at Biopolis which offered exactly that casual dining experience at the back of a beautiful landscape illustrated with water-flowing features and lush greenery. Singaporeans, myself included, would more commonly regard this part of the island as a biomedical research hub. It is no coincidence however that boutique cafe, The Lawn, decided to land foot its operations here back in November 2011. With an intention to introduce a brand new concept to the Singapore F&B scene, The Lawn focus on serving bang for the buck calories-worthy salad and grill dishes in a relaxed setting. It might seem like an awkward fit initially being able to dine on the astro-turf patio alfresco-style but on hindsight, we felt that it was provocatively interesting and unique! After all, life is stressful enough as it is and some surprising elements in the middle of urban land can only surely titillate!

With a tacky tagline - 'Come Meat Your Greens', we were intrigued by what this speciality grill and salad cafe had to offer. Can healthy eating be good tasting and interesting? Lets find out!

Spoilt for choice, we requested for recommendations from the friendly servers and were suggested the fish fillet as my protein for the dish. The stronger flavoured Italian parsley was chosen over the curly counterparts. The fresh and 'grassy' flavours of the herb appeared slightly masked by the cardinal flavours stemmed from butter and Kosher salt though it lingered in the after taste. This dish would certainly appeal to those with a savoury appetite. Coming fresh off the grill, the flesh of the fish was tender and nicely complemented by the slightly crisp char-grilled bits.

A Teochew at heart, there was an inkling of nostalgia which trickled down the back of my throat with that beautifully cooked pickled Chinese olive rice (kana chye). It must have been at least 2 decades ago when my grandfather used to prepare this dish for us before his passing. The introduction of carbohydrates to the dish was to offer hungry diners an alternative to mere salad which could make a more filling meal. Adopting a secret recipe that of the owner's mum, the rice was so good and addictive that quite frankly, I wouldn't mind enjoying it as a main on its own! The rice was cooked al dente and the grains could be separated easily. Despite so, it was not too greasy and the flavours were bold and robust. We were split about the salinity of the dish for personally I found it a touch too strong for my palate (though I admit to having an acute sharpness to flavours) while my other dining companions enjoyed it the way it was.

The accompanying side salad was fresh and offered a good crunch and crispness to the grilled mains. Being a fan of salad dishes, I am very particular about the quality of salad served and its freshness. Well, I suppose anyone would frown upon wilted leaves with brown edges? The Lawn certainly passed the quality test on this accord!

This was one of their more popular dishes on the menu and we decided to give it a shot. The prawns were carefully marinated with their special concoction of herbs and juices before landing on the flat grill. We enjoyed the balance in flavours with an initial punch of saltiness subtly neutralized by a mild sweetness. The finely diced garlic gave a neat dose of fragrance to the seafood and in general it was a savoury dish well-paired with the olive rice and salad sides.

The dishes were freshly made to order on this flat-grill. The metallic covers helped to speed up cooking time and more importantly to allow the grilled proteins to retain moisture. While the prawns lacked firmness in terms of texture, it was succulent and the marinade paid off on our palate.

Having tasted the savoury rice dishes, it was time to put the salad dishes to a test. Admittedly, this was one of the few if only place to serve a portion that generous that even I struggled to finish the dish. Paying close attention to the most minute details, each salad dish had 100 grams of Romaine lettuce salad with an additional 25 grams of assorted salad leaves. This was topped with a generous 125 grams of freshly grilled chicken breast, which had been sliced to bite-sized portions. Calling out to all the fitness enthusiasts out there, this is your answer to a post-workout meal, complete with low carbs and high protein (at least 26 grams of good clean protein!) We would highly recommend for diners to consume this fresh where the well marinated chicken breast portions tasted tender and soft with a beautiful thin coating of maple syrup to give a saccharine oomph, sweet enough to please and not satiate. The sinful indulgence was balanced with the bed of fresh salad which tasted clean and crisp.

The fun part was where we got the opportunity to choose 5 toppings and a dressing of our choice, so let your creative juices flow in trying to find the best combination to go with your greens and protein. We went for chestnut, sweet corn, tofu, baby potatoes and raisin and together it was an interesting mix which left us satisfied!

With a 'Create-Your-Own' salad menu, I thought it was important to get the combination of main and sides right in order to nail the balance in flavours. It might be a bit tricky so if in doubt, consult the friendly servers like we did!

Aceto Balsamico Beef Cuts (S$9.90 + S$2/-)

In addition to the choices available under the 'Classics', there was the 'Premium' category of protein which carried interesting names such as Grilled Salsa Duck and the two beef dishes which we tried. Originated from Modena and Reggio Emilia (in Italy), the Aceto Balsamico vinegar was a true traditional rendition, aged for at least 12 years. If you are a fan of good balsamic vinegar, you would taste the sharpness almost instantaneously upon the first bite. It was rich, glossy, deep brown in colour and had that beautiful complex flavour that balanced the natural sweet and sour elements of the cooked grape juice with hints of wood from the casks. Admittedly, it was quite a waste that the portioned Sirloin beef spent a tad too much time on the grill and was slightly overcooked. The ingredients put together were of premium quality and would certainly be a must-try for foodies who have a preference for vinaigrette dishes.

Ben's Beef Rub (S$9.90 + S$2)

Upon being served, our senses were highly stirred by the aroma of this special Sirloin beef dish named after a close friend of the owner. No prizes though for guessing that the recipe came from the mystery friend, Ben! A dry rub with a combination of salt, pepper, sugar, herbs and spices had been added to the meat and unlike liquid marinade, dry rub forms a crust on the exterior of the meat when grilled. The salt component of the rub would draw out the succulent juices in the steak, resulting in a moister bite. Upon being grilled, the sugar caramelized to form the thin layer of crust to seal in the flavour and juices. Seriously, how can you say no to this? It was beautifully grilled and this time round, the chef nailed the cooking time and everything was spot-on - the flavours and texture just came together neatly. Every mouthful was a flavoursome chew and being the owner's favourite dish, it would be hard to go wrong on this!

Salad Dressings

We were very privileged indeed to have the opportunity to try all 9 of their dressing offerings. For all the dishes, diners have the option to choose a classic dressing to go along while premium dressings such as the ones in the top row of the picture above have an additional charge of S$1. Let me do a quick run down.

Top Row (Premium Dressings): Beachy Peachy, Manly Mango, Wasa Honey
Middle Row (Classic Dressings): Red Island, Meso Spicy, Citrus
Bottom Row (Classic Dressings): Honey Ball, Maple Peanut, Perky Sesame Ginger

For the individual breakdown in flavours, please refer to our blog!

Upon placing the orders and choosing your salad, you move on to make the payment further down the line on the right. What we really liked about the place was the open kitchen concept where you would witness your food being freshly cooked before you!

With copies of lifestyle magazines readily available for dine-in customers, feel free to take one, grab a seat and laze the afternoon away to some delicious salad and grill!

It was in general a very enjoyable dining experience at The Lawn. The staffs were a dynamic and youthful bunch who were friendly and very approachable. The lady whom I spoke to was also very knowledgeable about the different menu offerings. In conclusion and to answer the question posed at the start of this entry, we found the food value for money and more importantly worthy of our calories! So yes, healthy eating can be delicious! That being said, I can be quite particular with my grill. I was actually expecting the classic beautiful grill-lines to be slew across the protein but having served their meat in bite-sized portions and on a flat-grill, this would obviously not be possible. Do note that they also have an online store where orders could be made online! For the health-conscious, grill and salad seemed like the perfect solution to a good post-workout recovery or even just to pamper yourself with some good calories on any given day! While obviously there were hits and misses like any eatery, the featured signature dishes did The Lawn proud and we were most impressed with the dressing offerings, each tasting of fresh ingredients being used.

We would like to express our appreciation to Jonathan who graciously invited us for this food tasting session but this write-up was done out of free-will without charges. As such, we enjoyed the liberty of customizing our meals. It would be worth noting that the portions in the photographs were actually reduced, so normal diners could expect an even more generous serving size! The lovely weekend afternoon was spent chattering away where we shared places of good food and basically talked about anything under the Sun!

Fact is, it is not easy to eat clean, be healthy yet still feel satisfied and full. People tend to shun salads because they assume that it is 'rabbit food' and not meant as human food. Others on the end of the spectrum, drown their greens with copious amounts of high-fat creamy dressings and cheese, deluding themselves that all salads are healthy and wonder why despite having salads for lunch and dinner, they are still not losing weight.

Well, here at The Lawn Grill & Salad Cafe, you can expect to eat hearty portions of real food, that is full-bodied in flavor, without bursting your calorie count for the day. Owner Jonathan was inspired by salad bars back in California and brought the concept back home here to Singapore. It is all about fresh greens topped with premium grills accompanied by zesty flavorful dressings that are not caloric-laded. The best part? You get to customize your own salad, choosing up to 5 toppings and one of the many homemade dressings that The Lawn's kitchen has specially concocted for you, all for just $9.90!

All grills are prepared upon order and are still sizzling even as they reach your table.

Looking to add more lean meat and protein to your diet? Go for the chicken breast meat that is done three different ways- a subtly sweet Maple Chicken, the fragrant but slightly dry Chicken with Herb Infusion or the newly added Mojo Cheeken with a tinge of orange zest and Indian spices.

Feel like having fish instead? Try the amazing buttery melt-in-your-mouth Butter Dory or be adventurous with the Fresh Fruit Dory that has a citrus bite. Alternatively, for the vegetarians, fret not because you too have a choice between the char-grilled Asparagus & Eggplant or the plus-sized earthy Portobello Mushroom packed with umami flavor.

Premium cuts such as the Ben's Beef Rub and Aceto Balsamico Beef Cuts require an additional $2 but remain as one of The Lawn's top sellers simply because discerning customers appreciate a well prepared steak and are willing to pay for good quality.

We were very fortunate to be able to have a taste of most of their grills and my top pick goes to the Butter Dory that was so delicate and smooth. Loved how the rub of Italian Parsley, Kosher salt and butter brought out the natural sweetness of the John Dory and complimented the firm white flesh that simply melted in my mouth. I always have a soft spot for Portobello Mushrooms and naturally had high expectations, which The Lawn delivered in taste. Thick, 'meaty' and grilled to perfection, these babies will have any meat-loving carnivore on his knees, begging for more.

The stand-outs for the dressings were the creamy Red Island, a healthier but tastier version of the well-loved Thousand Island dressing, the Honeyball, for the sweet tooth in you and the Wasahonie, which packed a punch with a kick of Wasabi, tapered down by a blend of Mayo and Honey.

For the carb-lovers, have the Olive Rice instead of the salad for the exact same price!

There is no excuse not to eat healthy and still be satisfied here at The Lawn Grill & Salad Café. The huge crowds that we witnessed during lunch hour is testament that this place does serve up delicious tasting food in huge portions and at affordable prices that keep customers happy so they keep coming back for more.

The idea for The Lawn actually came after a trip to California where they saw that salad-eating can be much more interesting than just having cold, processed meat over the salad. I have always agreed to the old saying that “What’s good for you is almost certainly not going to taste good”. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how savoury the food at The Lawn tasted. I would say The Lawn definitely has provided us with a more delicious alternative to healthy food.

You can fully customise your salad or rice by choosing the grill and dressings. Yes, the price is affordable for the nice ambience and healthy food you get!

It was really interesting dipping my salad into the different dressings. For a healthier option, I would suggest the Citrus flavour which was refreshing and light. However, my friend thought that it was a bit too sour for her. Other dressings which scored points with us were the Red Island and the Honeyball. There are so many options, so try it for yourself!

Well, this was my favourite dish of the day. The olive fried rice with Ben's beef ribs. There were two choices for beef; one was this and the other was the beef cuts. The staff explained to us that the beef cuts were on the sour side while this was more of spicy and savoury.

Overall, I feel that the food plus the ambience are worth returning back for. Even a non-salad lover like me fell for the salad! And for people who don't mind the calories, why not try the rice combination with the yummy grill?

Before I start off, I strongly suggest visiting TheLawn because be prepared to clear the misconception that salads are just vegetables. No, they come with grilled meat now. So, let's Meat your Greens at The Lawn.

New updates! With all the feebacks commenting that the POT size was too big and the BOWL size was too small, the owners of TheLawn decided to fuse two such sizes into a medium size instead, called The Lawn Box Size, and of course, at a lower prize than that of Pot's. No more pot or bowl size, bear that in mind.

I got to try the Chicken breast with maple fusion, Buttered seared pacific dory and grilled prawns. My vote will definitely go to grilled prawns because the prawns can't get any fresher, if not you probably had to go catch it yourself, haha! But still, the dory fish was great as well because the combination of the charred butter and kosher salt gave me a very delicious taste sensation. Personally, I've always hated chicken breast because I find them very dry. But boy, I was so wrong! Chicken breast can also approximate to the tender and juicy chicken thighs, best is it was less oily, and this was exactly what TheLawn presented to me.

I swear that this tasted better than the maple chicken. The key to the great taste, is none other than the charred butter with Italian parsley and Kosher salt, adding an additional taste sensation to the Dory fish.

Fresh is what I can think of to describe this, because that's the most prominent characteristic of the grilled prawns. So fresh that it was so chewy! The house's unique herbs and juices used to marinate the prawns was also another plus factor that you'll never get to experience elsewhere. Consuming alone without any complements was good enough to achieve full satisfaction.

Upon deciding your grills, you get to choose 5 toppings (no longer 6 for pot size because they are now BOX size!). I would still think that 5 toppings is more than enough because the servings they gave was not stingy at all.

The Lawn also aims to provide you a better and extraordinary experience with your salad by giving you more than 20 choices of toppings - it's hard not to be spoilt for choice.

Few of my favourite toppings are: Wasahonie (wasabi), MeSoSpicy (taste a little like tomyum) and Beachy Peachy (sweet and sour, appetizing!) .

Overall, The Lawn provides you a greater and healthier alternatives to your daily food solutions like fast food, or plain old kopitiam. Something better than that? You probably have to go to bigger restaurants or cafes which cost you at least more than $15 a meal. Here at The Lawn, ordering has been made easy (A box of salad at $9.90) and I totally feel that the price is too good to be true! Must try it yourself one day!!

Hope you liked my review!

I chose grilled chicken infused with maple salad, together with boiled brocoli, pasta, cashew nuts and an egg, topping it off with spicy sauce (which you can choose too). It was a perfect combination of meat, vegetables and nuts that gave a crunch. I also loved the spicy sauce which had only a tinge of spicyness but flavoured the entire dish!
