We decided to visit The University Club after seeing pictures of its delectable set lunch offerings posted on a friend’s Facebook. Located within NUS, The University Club (a sister outlet of the Privé Group) is a hidden gem that offers high-quality yet affordable set lunches ($25++ for a 2-Course set and $28++ for a 3-Course set). The restaurant comprises of two settings – a sophisticated dining area suitable for both casual and formal meals, and an al fresco dining area for patrons who prefer ample sunlight and the great outdoors. We chose the former.Warm bread was served shortly after we placed our orders. The bread was soft on the inside yet crusty on the outside, one of the nicest bread we had in a long while! StartersWe ordered the Citrus Soy-Cured Scallops (add $2) and Weekly Special (Smoked Ocean Trout) for starters. The zesty Citrus Soy-Cured Scallops was a refreshing treat to the taste buds. The scallops were soft and melted instantly upon the slightest touch of my tongue. The Smoked Ocean Trout was very flavourful and fleshy. MainsWe ordered the Herb-Rubbed Lamb Leg (add $4) and Spicy Prawn Ravioli (add $2). The lamb was served with couscous, baby spinach, roasted garlic & mint yoghurt sauce. The lamb was very tender and fragrant without any hint of mutton scent. The couscous was smooth with a subtle hint of basil. The baby spinach was however, a tad too salty for my liking. The prawn ravioli in prawn bisque was delectable and left a bitter-sweet aftertaste. The soft and fluffy ravioli was a joy to eat, yummy! DessertsWe ordered the Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée and Bouchons of Sticky Date Pudding. The Crème Brûlée with balsamic infused berries & vanilla sauce was rich and creamy. However, it would have been perfect should it be less sweet. The Sticky Date Pudding was an interesting find. Coupled with Pear Compote, Walnuts & Butterscotch Sauce, this unique dish left us pleasantly surprised and wanting for more. The bite size pudding was soft and melted instantly upon entering our mouths. The aromatic aftertaste of the sticky date was truly heavenly. In all, it was a sensuous experience amidst the lush greenery surrounding NUS. The delectable dishes, coupled with the tranquil ambience marked a memorable birthday celebration for me – and all at a wallet friendly cost of $75.30 (inclusive of GST and service charge). continue reading
