Finally tried Tim Ho Wan the other day!

Seriously, all of us have heard about the long queues and waiting for the 4 heavenly kings and one of them being the Baked Bun with BBQ Pork! So I just have to try it for myself. Waited for only 6 mins on a weekday afternoon!

However, even at that timing, the restaurant was pretty packed and we (my friend and I) had to share tables with two other strangers. The whole restaurant was operating in such a fast pace and it is definitely not a place where you can choose to relax and enjoy eating your food slowly at. Every now and then, waiters/waitresses will be walking around delivering the different trays of dim sum to different tables. I have to admit, the service is pretty fast and efficient. The staff was attentive as well. I remember my friend accidentally dropped her chopsticks and before we could raise our hands to request for other pair, the waitress was at our table with a new one! Pork Dumpling with Shrimp (SGD5/4pcs)
Ordered this thinking it's gonna taste like your typical dimsum's siewmai but NO.
It was not yummy at all, tasted a little like fishcake and I didn't finish mine...

Moving on to the 4 heavenly kings which are the Baked Bun with BBQ Pork, Steamed Egg Cake, Pan Fried Carrot Cake and Vermicelli Roll with Pig's Liver.

Steamed Egg Cake (SGD3.80)
It's just soft and sweet tasting.
Very nice to eat with the rest because they are too rich in flavour.
I found myself picking small pieces of this and eating it because I was kinda sick of the rest.
A refreshing kind of taste I guess? But not THAT heavenly.

Pan Fried Carrot Cake (SGD4.50/3pcs)
One of my favourites dimsum tried that day!
Very 香 and yummy! ^^
If only the outer layer was more crispy and also that their share was bigger!

I forgot to take photo of the Vermicelli Roll with Shrimp!!
Didn't have the pig liver one because both my friend and I don't take pig liver.
But the shrimp one was pretty good! I love the roll's texture and the salty sauce!

Really matching with each other!

It was prawns-overload that day since most of our dimsum were prawns-filled.

Now on to the highly raved...

Baked Bun with BBQ Pork (SGD4.50/3pcs)
Honestly, I felt that despite the hype over it, it was not really that awesome like how EVERYBODY raves. Maybe it's just me, whom expectations got higher when everybody just loves it. I feel that the fillings were pretty good but the bun was too sweet! My friend agreed with me too. We both love the pan fried carrot cake the most!

Anyway apparently you can only order one set of the buns/pax and guess what? My friend and I only shared a set between us two.

PS: If you are getting same drinks, just get one to share since it's refillable (I only know for tea lahh). ;)
Not auntie, but it's just more worth it. Water is charged at SGD0.50! Sigh restaurant nowadays...

The dish which was must order whenever eating Dim Sum, it was still hot as serving. Made by the chef, it was freshly steamed everyday. The price was $4.20.
Overally, it was satisfying and we enjoyed our breakfast there. Although the waiting time was lengthy yet it was worthwhile.

The friend spring rolls are abit too oily, but because lots of crunchy vegetables are wrapped inside, which make it delicious and nutritional as well. Steamed meat balls are quite chewy and you can really taste the natural sweetness from the minced meat used in this dish.

We tried almost all of their dim sum selection and sadly, I personally feel that Tim Ho Wan was kind of over-rated. Their tastes weren't as good as I thought, maybe due to higher expectations since it is a michellin star restaurant. Out of all their dim sums, I feel that their specialty BBQ pork bun is the best and it was delicious! The rest is rather normal just like any other dim sum restaurants.

Ordered the must-eats of 4 "Heavenly Kings" i.e. Baked BBQ Pork Bun/ Steamed Egg Cake/ CCF with Pork Liver (
)/ Carrot Cake.

IMO, Steamed Egg Cake was very fluffy indeed with distinct taste of gula melaka, but that's about it. I've definitely tasted more eggy and authentic-tasting egg cakes in neighbourhood stalls. CCF with pork liver was an interesting and unique rendition of an old dim sum fave - the liver was well-executed and tender without the porky taste,... but one does really have to like pork liver as a pre-requisite to appreciating this dish. Carrot Cake was the pan-fried version and flavourful in every bite, but too soft for my liking. Hands-down, the Baked BBQ Pork Bun was the winner of the lot - the slightly sweet crispy crumbly baked crust yielding easily to a warm savoury char siew filling. Mmmm, no wonder we saw so many tables ordering these buns for takeaway.

Other than the above dishes, we also had the congee (satisfyingly creamy and flavourful), spring roll with egg white (very crispy but not greasy - interesting mix of textures), Garlic & Mushroom & Spinach Dumpling (yummy wholesome goodness), Beef Ball with beancurd skin (nice but not remarkable) and Osmanthus Cake (interesting but not outstanding).

Overall, we felt that the offerings from Tim Ho Wan were nicely done and stand out from our usual dim sum fare, service was efficient as well... but definitely not worth the over-hyped queues they have become notorious for.

My friend told me never to give the Baked BBQ Pork Bun ($4.50 for 3 pieces) a miss, and I always follow advices so I took heed of it. The Baked BBQ Pork Bun was served warm and crisp, with a fluffy inside. It somehow resembled a Bolo bun with the baked exterior which was fragrant. The whole bun also lacked of the usual bread taste that was usual on baked buns, which probably made it so unique. The BBQ Pork was tender and sweet with the marination of honey, and filled up almost every single gap in the bun. Definitely worthy of its “heavenly king” title and not to be missed, or else you would not have considered to have visited Tim Ho Wan.

Steamed Egg Cake ($3.80) was the another one of the four “heavenly kings” here. While looking pretty normal and really nothing out of the ordinary, it was in fact a unique rendition of a dish that could be found elsewhere. The fluffiness of the steamed egg cake is unmatched, and it was light and airy. Unlike other steamed egg cakes, this one does not stick around on your tongue or in the throat as well. While easily overlooked, this is another dish that we found rather impressive and could not stop ourselves from digging into the whole time.

Moving on from the “heavenly kings”, we also have Steamed Items such as the Prawn Dumplings ($5.50 for 4 pieces). They had a nice skin which was smooth and of the right thickness. Prawns are also big, fresh and succulent. Overall a nice item to have.

The Pork Dumplings with Shrimp ($5.00 for 4 pieces) also known as our shumai is tightly packed and firm, but could go on the edge of being slightly too tough for some. It could be an issue with our local tastebuds, but we would have loved it more if the skin actually tasted a bit more. The prawns are fresh though, which made the dish more than just being decent.

I'm sure everyone has heard of the famous 1 michelin star Tim Ho Wan restaurant. I find that this restaurant is indeed overrated, as most of the dim sum taste average to me. However, their BBQ pork bun is something to raved about, the out layer was hot and crispy and the filling was filled with sweet char siew. Overall for such average standard, I don't find it worthy for the queue.

sounds like a weird combination but it was actually quite matching!

I would not say that they are the best dim sum restaurant that you can find in Singapore but they definitely do live up to their name as a Michelin star restaurant.

Overall, everyone should go try the baked bun with BBQ pork from this 1 Michelin Star Dim Sum restaurant. You will not regret it!

This time I tried their spring roll with egg white, which tasted very delicious. The pig liver vermicelli roll was not nice, tastes like it is not fully cooked and quite tasteless.

The service was okay, but they keep giving us the wrong order

3 person after gst costs about $60+ which is considered quite expensive, not really worth it.

A light subtle taste of brown sugar in this Steam Egg Cake (Ma Lai Gao/Ma Lai Ko/Multiple names) was my favourite. The extremely spongey texture made this cake very “airy” and light to eat without filling too much space in the tummy for more dimsum. It’s like a midway meal dessert.

Fried Turnip Cake was charred crispily beautifully truly madly deeply as the feeling of sinking your teeth crunching into the springy turnip cake with an occasional savoury chinese sausage or shredded turnip.

Pretty cubes of translucent golden “cases” of Osmanthus flowers and wolfberries that glistens under the spotlights of the restaurant tasted oriental and ultimately refreshing after all the savoury goodies. A little history lesson is that this dish used to be for Empress Dowager only.

Overall the meal was great however there are times the queue gets really ridiculous that I’d rather fly back to hongkong than to stand for hours.

Garlic, Mushroom, Spinach Dumpling ($3.80++)
Love this one. Very tasty filling that one cannot feel the skin.

Spring Roll with Egg White ($4.20++)
Very unique filling for a spring roll. One may thought the egg white may be overdone but it is just right.

Vermicelli Roll with Shrimp ($5.50++)
Very tasty but I wish for more soya sauce as it is a bit dry.

Yam Puree with Sago (Hot) ($3.50++)
It is a rather watery version compare to Or Nee. Taste not bad, but would be better with cubes of yam in it.
